At its most basic level altruism is simply doing something helpful or nice for someone else, without any conscious expectation of requittal. It doesn't have to be self-sacrificing in a big way in order to qualify. This sort of thing is the rule among humans, even though there are a few arseholes who prove to be exceptions.

yeah even if you want to say "altruism is done to make the altruist feel good" there wd be a chunk of humanity for whom that wdn't be the case

Altruism among social animals is adaptive, so one can assume it evolved (in some sense). Whether it is a genetic trait among humans is unanswerable. Most likely there is some genetic disposition to it, but what that really means is unclear.
