Dud, I say. I think it's rude to say to someone "oh hang on, I've got another call coming through".

but what do you think?

its only rude if you don't handle it properly. if you say, "can i call you back in 5 minutes, my mums just calling to see when i'm back etc etc", and then call them back straight away its fine

having said that, i don't always answer respond to my call waiting call, and just call them back afterwards

I put the second call to voicemail. that'll teach them to be second.

I don't like it, they should just call back later. It interrupts phone calls and if I had it I would never ever answer.

you may aswell say "hang on, i'm stuck in the 80s". please! dud. deffo.

If you know there's an urgent call due about a shipment down the docks or your new kidneys then fair enough but I'd let 'em go to voicemail otherwise.

It's good if yr on a conversation you don't want to be. But I pretty much never am, so it's annoying. The verdict is dud.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Annoying, so annoying, there's always someone ringing and they won't fucking just accept that you're not going to take their call and so that annoying blip distracts you, and you start thinking "who could that be" and thus are rude to whoever you're talking to in the first place. I curse those who expect me to use call waiting, last time I tried it didn't work anyway, it cut both people off and there I was talking to the reciever like a fool.

Call-waiting can be a very convenient way to escape from a conversation and it can be a good way to have someone answer when you really want to talk to them instead of the horror-of-all-horrors-engaged-signal. It's mildy dud now that the ring tone sounds the same as the normal one because you don't know when you're persistence is just butting in and when it's all right.
