As I just posted on rolling RIP thread, my dad used to know him a bit (he was involved the redevelopment of Fort Augustus Abbey, and used to be a regular visitor to the airport where my dad worked), and he gave me a script for Animal Magic which himself and Johnny Morris had autographed for me. My dad had a lot of time for him, he always took the time to stop for a chat with the staff when he was passing through. RIP.

Aw. It's good to know he was a nice guy, was afraid of some terrible revelations shitting up the RIP thread. There is still some good animal programming on kid's TV (this is the sort of thing you know as a student) but he was the best.
