Are rules important in art? Does it have to obey/disrespect/break rules?

"Rules" is too strong, I think -- art has conventions, and the real work of the artist lies in deciding when to employ those conventions, when to reorganize them, and when to ignore them entirely.

Well, rules in art are very important- because you have to know what the rules *are* before you can break them effectively. Which is what every two-bit artist living south of Canal or east of Strand seems to forget these days. ;-)
