You beat me to it--I was going to post the "Do you parents know you're Ramones?" clip. I just realized that close-up of Sticky Fingers echoes Truffaut's close-ups of certain books in Fahrenheit 451.

clemenza, Saturday, 8 September 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

quite a sight in Chelsea Girls

eight years pass...

There is a documentary underway.

Hmm, the documentary is mentioned in the link from nine years ago in Ned’s OP, guess they continue to work on it.

Her writing seems pretty good. Read a little bit of her Warhol book once in the library in the ancient beforetimes, might want to revisit. Novels are intriguing too.

two years pass...

I didn't know anything about Eating Raoul before watching it tonight, but it took approximately 3 minutes for me to tune into its frequency and happily ride along through the rest of it. (I saw TerrorVision a few months ago, but liking that was a bigger ask.)

Need to see her in more things. Recommendations?

(Seen RnRHS, obvs)

A supporting role, but nonetheless an interesting pairing with Tom "Tooth Fairy" Noonan in House of the Devil.

Coming cold to Eating Raoul is the best way to do it. I had the same experience. A really unique film. Woronov and Paul Bartel briefly reprise their roles from Raoul in Chopping Mall, but I don't know if it's worth seeing for that alone. Still kind of a fun movie. Night of the Comet is definitely worth seeing.

I didn't realize there was a doc about her until reading this thread. Looks like it is still being made.

Her book Swimming Underground is really good. We all know the Warhol Factory stories, but she dissects them like it's an anatomy lab. I wish she'd write more.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 29 June 2023 13:26 (two years ago)

Obvious, but Chelsea Girls. (Just assumed you-know-what when I saw this.)

clemenza, Thursday, 29 June 2023 13:29 (two years ago)

Oh right, Night of the Comet: seen it a hundred times (it's my Thanksgiving Day tradition for inexplicable reasons).

Yes, her performance/presence in Chelsea Girls is amazing.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 29 June 2023 14:04 (two years ago)

She was pretty annoying in the VU documentary though.

Renaissance of the Celtic Trumpet (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 June 2023 14:11 (two years ago)

I heard she doesn’t like hippies.

Who does?

She was pretty annoying in the VU documentary though.

Agree--condescending in the most cliched and wrongheaded way. She made it sound like everything that came out of California in 1966 was Scott McKenzie.

clemenza, Thursday, 29 June 2023 14:32 (two years ago)

She was second choice for the VU documentary when Eric Cartman was unavailable.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 29 June 2023 15:23 (two years ago)

She ruled in the doc. She rules in everything.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 29 June 2023 16:16 (two years ago)

was gonna say, one of my favorite bits of the doc!

fpsa, Thursday, 29 June 2023 16:21 (two years ago)

I just think it was such a wildly-off-the-mark caricature of what a whole bunch of West Coast bands were up to.

clemenza, Thursday, 29 June 2023 19:30 (two years ago)

she's not speaking as a music historian, she's speaking as a person who was there and had a perspective

na (NA), Thursday, 29 June 2023 19:38 (two years ago)

A totally cliched perspective. I just got the impression she was trying far too hard.

Renaissance of the Celtic Trumpet (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 June 2023 19:45 (two years ago)

Lol Mary doesn't need to try to do shit she was on fucking stage with the VU and in fucking Rock N Roll high school and she doesn't give a fuck.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 29 June 2023 19:47 (two years ago)

she's speaking as a person who was there and had a perspective

But you can still argue that she's way off the mark, no? She could also have said that Bob Dylan and Smokey Robinson were inept as songwriters, and that would be a perspective too.

Here is a rare and important nsfw picture of Herve Villachaize sitting on a naked Mary.

Her Screen Test (don't know the song):

clemenza, Thursday, 29 June 2023 21:12 (two years ago)

(Almost every Screen Test I ever watch, I'm just overwhelmed. I wonder if Warhol gave any thought to how these would feel six decades down the road...or if they'd even survive.)

clemenza, Thursday, 29 June 2023 21:16 (two years ago)

I mostly like her and have my own problems with hippies but…at some point some of this stuff gets kind of old.
