Should any organization really run a charitable giving campaign that promises the possibility of winning a prize via a sweepstakes if you donate? shouldn't you donate because you wanna be good guy? Isnt it insulting? "You are too selfish to just give for the spiritof giving so here's a prize chance"

i have way more reservations about donating to a charity with a crazy amount of overhead going to these outside firms that handle their solicitations. like if they spent 30% of your money to pay someone to get other people's money versus spending $10 for a box of donuts you could win.

we are talking abotu peoples sense of dignity here
― Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago)
idk it probably depends on the format
like I've been to loads of table quizzes where the entry money went to some charity or cause, but there were also prizes (cash) and raffle prizes. people usually didn't accept the cash prizes.
do you mean people who sell charity scratchcards and that sort of thing though? i didn't think anyone really bought them for a chance to win, wouldn't you just buy a normal one?

dignity doesn't enter into it if you're getting a downton abbey totebag.

ok brining it all back home - at my workplace - "give to *** charity and you could win a car!!"
it just seems degrading
― Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:35 (twelve years ago)
how so? I mean how is it more degrading than any other method a charity would use to drum up money?
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:41 (twelve years ago)
"Rather than feel god about helping people, we will give you a car"
― Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago)
like praise of virtuousness for its own sake?
― j., Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago)
it would probably make your donation non tax deductible. probably other regulations surrounding such activity. did your workplace run this past the legal department?
― how's life, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:51 (twelve years ago)
I don't see how feeling good about helping people is tainted by being able to win a car, any more than giving blood is tainted by getting a delicious cookie and juice.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago)
motivtae people by positive reinforecement, nto negative - "you are so shitty, heres your furcking car you jerk"
― Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago)
haha if that's what's written on the entry form i would agree that's pretty degrading.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:08 (twelve years ago)
no it actually says "Assholes: Car for charitable giving. You are specks of human filth."
― Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago)
Latham, do you work at a nonprofit? Or is the situation more that your company is offering a prize to raise contributions for a separate nonprofit?

I think its just something the United Way is offering everyone who gives to the united way

"first time" cover wasn't great to begin with, but the amanda palmer version is just horrible. same goes for the video, and then some.

donations might not be tax-deductible but donors might not care because they have a chance to win something. nonprofits are allowed to run raffles in most states, but they usually have to have a raffle license and follow a pretty strict set of rules and regulations.

answer to original question: it would be nice if people just gave money to be good people but realistically an incentive is never going to hurt, especially when nonprofits are competing against each other for a relatively small pool of potential donations.
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 13 September 2012 20:00 (twelve years ago)
based on a quick search, it appears that raffle ticket purchases from a nonprofit are not tax-deductible, because the buyer is receiving something of value (i.e. a chance to win) in return for their purchase

If your workplace offered a view of tit in exchange for charitable donation I think there woul dbe allot of money raised
― Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Thursday, 13 September 2012 20:41 (twelve years ago)
