All I was trying to do was work out how to umount something, and... oh no excuses. back to UNIX beginners school for me. shit shit shit.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, Alan.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I'm sorry, that was mean. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Dan Perry, utter bastard. (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't worry Alang, I did a sudo rm /* and spent my first week at university trying to reinstall from a fatally scratched CD.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

is there a spool of the shell history somewhere, i want to know for sure just how bloody dense i am.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

This will teach you to poke around where you shouldn't. Use the pretty icons like everyone else.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Back in the day (before windows) I managed to do:
del c:*.* /s
Are you sure?
Y!!!

On My dads office PC, boy was he pleased!

Simeon (Simeon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

What were you hoping to do and what does the /s bit do?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i know nothing about any of this stuff

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

alan

if you're using bash then .bash_history in your home directory. can't remember sh equivalent although the history command should show you, limited to last 50 entries though, or something (definable)

(nick, /s is 'include subdirectories')

andy

koogs, Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, the /s include subdirectories (delete absolutely everything? Are you sure? Oh yes I'm quite sure!).
I was trying to delete a particular directory, just forgot to put that bit in.
After that I learnt to stick with the pretty icons...

Simeon (Simeon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Can you do something like that so we can get rid of N., alan?

david h (david h), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

That wouldn't be very nice now, would it. N is a nice mang.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, but...

david h (david h), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know...

david h (david h), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Like...

david h (david h), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know...

david h (david h), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm four square behind that man. Nick's arrogance has reached fever pitch over the last couple of weeks. Banish him say I.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

What have I done now?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

rm N* might catch one or two innocent victims too, but it's a small price to pay, eh Ned? There is a nice "don't bother to ask me to confirm - I know what I'm doing, honest" switch in Unix, but I don't remember what it is offhand.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

rm -fr this thread

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

DELETE FROM messages WHERE name rlike '(N.|Nick|Nick Dastoor)';

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

but it's a small price to pay, eh Ned?

Well I...hey!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh "rlike"...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

bnw (bnw), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone else read that SQL query in FatNick speak?

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

David, we've only just got rid of N., I don't see why you lot up there shouldn't put up with him for a bit longer.
