Mark G, Monday, 17 September 2012 15:07 (twelve years ago)

haha @ Martin Carr...

I used to shop at the 'trose but that's because my door step was practically on their car park and also when they reduce food they don't just knock a couple of pence off, they knock whole quids off.

Sorry, I know that's not very funny.

most of these are awful and not funny

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 September 2012 15:19 (twelve years ago)

As some bloke just tweeted, this is hardly the social media marketing disaster it's being held up as. At the end of the day it's given Waitrose renewed publicity which they would probably welcome, however many lolz people are getting out of them at the moment.

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Monday, 17 September 2012 15:21 (twelve years ago)

yeah and there are barely any tweets about it anyway. twitter is so full of reactionary shit from armchair lefties.

also it has the best stuff in it. i fucking love shopping at waitrose, when i can afford it.

actually, 1) it's closest 2) it's local 3) the only shop that does the earl gray tea w/like best 4) particular nutty muesli 5) it's close.

Mark G, Monday, 17 September 2012 15:42 (twelve years ago)

also it has the best stuff in it. i fucking love shopping at waitrose, when i can afford it.

it's not necessarily expensive if you pick and choose, but in practice it tends to be hard to resist the pricier stuff the fruit and veg tips it over the edge, but the standard is indeed far better than everywhere else.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 September 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago)

only problem is it's actually quite expensive, except for booze which is remarkably cheap. I guess you get what you pay for though. I can't really afford to shop there unless it's for a few "bits".

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Monday, 17 September 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago)

their own brand shower gel is quite cheap, and is the tits. and OH their fennel salami. and they carry fentiman's orange jigger.

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Monday, 17 September 2012 16:16 (twelve years ago)

lots of the essential stuff isn't particularly expensive.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 September 2012 16:18 (twelve years ago)

Yeah but if you did your whole weekly shopping there I guarantee it would be significantly pricier. They do have some pretty good offers. I know this, I lived in their car park and would have regular heartattacks when my g/f would come back with a £30 plastic bag of food that would have usually been about £12 anywhere else.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Monday, 17 September 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago)

idk i think you have the option of buying expensive stuff but you dont have to - like LG said, the essential stuff is comparable to tesco prices

just sayin, Monday, 17 September 2012 16:45 (twelve years ago)

i <3 waitrose and wish there was one near me

just sayin, Monday, 17 September 2012 16:45 (twelve years ago)

I generally use the price of a red pepper as a barometer of inflation and shopping comparison.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Monday, 17 September 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago)

I love the Colombian coffee faux Magnums (which Magnum stopped making). They also used to do really good, interesting ready meals (would occasionally get a reduced one for lunch) but now they seem like the bog standard fare.
It's weird, I look at the prices of most things in Waitrose and think they're reasonable - not for everything, but usually they don't seem way off - but added together I spend way more there than I think. The answer is probably that Tescos etc prices are just far cheaper than I would guess.

kinder, Monday, 17 September 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago)

tescos are fuckin supermarkets as hitler would have run em

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Monday, 17 September 2012 17:46 (twelve years ago)

it's the veg and fruit, definitely. meat and stuff isn't hugely pricier in waitrose.

tesco is indeed awful tho, sainsburys is a lot nicer. my view is slightly coloured by tesco on bethnal green road which is hellish.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 September 2012 18:41 (twelve years ago)

I feel such burning, seething resentment every time I give Tesco my money. There is no other shop I know of that I use so much that fills me with such contempt for the human race.

Blue Collar Retail Assistant (Dwight Yorke), Monday, 17 September 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago)

They've just opened a wee metro-size one at highbury corner and I've been in loads. In fact I've kind of defected from lidl. There's obviously tons of ultra pricey stuff, but like dog latin says, when they reduce things they practically give it away. Bagels for 9p! Crab pate for 50p! Their discounts make me feel like dr zoidberg.

Also, the whole partner thing. <3 u, lewises.

Popped into Tescometro, found zanyoffers, got all week's evening mealstuffs for a grand total of £2.74

Thesedays, passing through M&S, you do see hoards of people waiting for the chuck-out man with the yellow stickers. How many people take their prizes home and say "OK, kids! Here's tonights evening meal! Executive Sandwich Platter with side order of Hommus!"

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 09:16 (twelve years ago)

We shop at Waitrose but I am mad at them since they recalled their Chinese range and replaced it with totally inferior product. The egg fried rice is all gluey mush now and the chicken fillets are disgusting. FML.

This. I think I started a thread a while ago about how Tesco have pretty much taken over from any other shopping method for me, simply because there are about three of their express stores to and from my way to work. And I fucking hate myself for shopping there, but they also happen to be cheap and way more convenient than anywhere else.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 09:40 (twelve years ago)

I do not give ANY money to Tesco, ever - all their goods could be 5p and that wouldn't change. Also, I'm probably not shopping anywhere that does UK tax avoidance or takes on unpaid shelf-stackers etc. from the Jobcentre. The warm feeling I get when passing a Tesco is a) the sense of being morally superior to Shirley Porter or Iain Duncan Smith, but who isn't? and b) calories, burning, as I take a bit longer to walk to Waitrose, M&S or Sainsbury's - all supermarkets I'm happy with.

ella fingerblast hurls forever (suzy), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:29 (twelve years ago)

I'm not happy with Sainsbury's because they opened a central or local or whatever on The Cut, not a quarter of a mile from the one outside Waterloo station, which is not only completely redundant but also a huge step towards the boring homogenisation of a decent and individual little street.

ledge, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:41 (twelve years ago)

I should really take up my boycott again, but when Tesco is the only supermarket for miles around it's not so easy just to nip out and get a bite to eat on a short lunch break. I've tried my best to avoid it - bring my own food into work etc but I'm often so busy in the evenings I forget to prepare anything and on those days it just stops being practical in any way for me to go anywhere else. There's a newsagent and I'd get a sandwich from there, but those things are extremely manky inedible affairs. And yet I honestly do hate myself every time I find myself in a Tesco.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:46 (twelve years ago)

Sainsbury might have a slightly more ethical approach but I find their food to be kind of bad value a lot of the time (slightly below-par produce, slightly higher prices and the lcosest one near me always seems to run out of essential stuff which makes the extra trip feel like a waste of time.)

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:56 (twelve years ago)

They spread like molasses. Rumour has it they're closing the local football club to build a Tesco Extra in its place, which means yet another handy Tesco on my journey home.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:14 (twelve years ago)

xp Costa and Pret more annoying, and the start of the problem. It was after they moved in that the landlord of the excellent little kitchen shop where the Sainsbury's now is doubled the rent, and they had to close. Oh well can't win 'em all, Lower Marsh is still holding out well.

ledge, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:17 (twelve years ago)

the "extra" and "express" shops are really horrible, generally true for sainsburys too. selling onions in threes, everything in a packet, crap meat, limited selection, and high prices.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:18 (twelve years ago)

everything in a packet is the wurst.

ledge, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:21 (twelve years ago)

yep. & sooo many of those sainsburys local's have opened on mare street/cambridge heath road in the last year

just sayin, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:22 (twelve years ago)

I have no problem with onions in threes, but then again nearly everything I ever cook begins with chopping an onion. Cosign the other objections though.

Britain needs rent controls for business space as much as residential really but no fucking way is that happening any time soon.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:22 (twelve years ago)

I dunno, I use onions non-stop too, but it does irritate me having to buy them in a pack of three, I don't know why. Partly cos I like to touch a veg before buying it I guess, also those onions in the packs feel like the shape is standardised or something.

A guy in the Cambridge Heath Sainsburys local tried to tell one of my pals that they don't sell garlic, the other day! This fucking country!

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:27 (twelve years ago)

I don't know why anyone in a neighbourhood with Asian/Turkish grocers shops for garlic in a mini-Sainsbury's, unless it's some kind of emergency. I am very lucky to have a good butcher, an Asian shop and The People's Supermarket (I'm a member) within yelling distance of my flat, and I use them before I use the supermarket for the items you'd expect specialists would be best/cheapest at. The 20 per cent members' discount at TPS is very useful.

Waitrose is where I get most of my condiments and they are now doing the fig jam friends used to bring me from Paris, so that's a win (friends have been redirected to smoked duck), and if I'm not getting two pounds off the price of a ready-meal due to red labelling, it stays in the shop. My closest Sainsbury's is great on Sunday afternoon, when about a dozen old Cantonese women hover near the bargain cooler and lunge for mark-downs. Other hoverers seem deferential to/scared of them.

ella fingerblast hurls forever (suzy), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:38 (twelve years ago)

because none of the Asian/Turkish grocers near me sell meat/fish.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:41 (twelve years ago)

because a bunch of bananas in my local Turkish grocers costs 2 fucking quid

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:42 (twelve years ago)

sorry that sounded angrier than i meant it

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:45 (twelve years ago)

LOOOOL also garlic is not meat/fish or bananas (yuck) and it's always cheaper/better quality in the 'ethnic' shop, as is chilli and ginger. All WC1 needs is a decent Turkish shop with fresh Turkish loaves delivered every day and I'd be all set.

ella fingerblast hurls forever (suzy), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:56 (twelve years ago)

yeah but the thing is having to go to two different shops, sometimes i do it but not at peaktime, it'd be madness.

also you're not actually listening to me, the local ethnic shop is not cheaper, nor is it better quality.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:07 (twelve years ago)

but if the point is to tell us about how great your area is you could start a thread

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:08 (twelve years ago)

This is all very well, but if one doesn't have the wage and doesn't live in the right area it's not so easy to shop at ethnic/ethical/premium stores. Buying garlic at the supermarket makes sense if the only time of day you can go shopping is 7pm at night (assuming you don't live in Central London)

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:28 (twelve years ago)

of course it does, and this romantic attitude towards "ethnic" shops makes no sense anyway, they're not good by default, or cheap by default.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:29 (twelve years ago)

Supermarket vegetables / fresh produce is horrible compared to even the crappiest looking shop with some veg out front where we are. Had some tomatoes from Haringey end of Green Lanes last week that were out of this world only a couple made it into the pan lol

Yeah in some parts of London the crappy looking shops tends to have pretty o_0 veg looking at you mile end / whitechapel / beth green. Have found good butchers but not good veg shops, would like some recs if anyone knows any!

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago)

which butchers do you use? the ones on roman road are decent ime, but again, shopping in the evenings means they're not an option.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:33 (twelve years ago)

yeh roman road near that square bit, he's a friendly chap, then the market on saturdays can be v good

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:39 (twelve years ago)

yeah he is nice actually.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:42 (twelve years ago)

Most butchers are open super-early to facilitate the local restaurants who pick up orders, so if you've got a good butcher on Roman Road, make time to shop there before work. Can't solve the veg problem because I think the market makes it problematic for traders to run a veg shop that's not a shite convenience store with a few fly-bitten bananas for £2.

ella fingerblast hurls forever (suzy), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:54 (twelve years ago)

it's v impractical overall, you know. i also find it difficult to think what i want to cook until the afternoon, plus there's exercise in the morning.

at some point i'll prob start using one of the delivery services a bit more, but it doesn't solve every problem.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:00 (twelve years ago)

as mentioned it really depends on your area. Stoke Newington/ Green Lanes are replete with excellent Turkish grocers, when I lived there the only time I would go to a supermarket was if I needed to buy pork. Walthamstow, where I am now, has a great street market with cheap fruit & veg, butchers etc.- but as with LG this isn't much use after work.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:13 (twelve years ago)

amazing fruit and veg shop near newington green as well, i miss it now i'm a tottenhammer

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, the Newington Green place is outstanding. It's great that it stocks niche stuff like salsify and cobnuts but also has loads of really good value fruit and vegetables. It's a resource that the whole community can use and is always packed as a result.

I'd like to think that it's a model that could be rolled out elsewhere.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago)

they opened another branch on Church St fairly recently, so I wouldn't bet against it.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago)

this is in all the papers today, i'd say a definite success story for waitrose. can't imagine it's any harm for them to cement their branding as a posh supermarket.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Thursday, 20 September 2012 08:19 (twelve years ago)

Yeah the "failure" is pretty mild here, possibly because no one actually hates Waitrose enough (imagine if Tesco had done this exact same thing). I suspect the whole thing was engineered from the start.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 September 2012 08:54 (twelve years ago)

Maybe so. I c&P'd the thread title from someone elses twitmessage, so.
