vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

I also add sugar to everything except fruity pebbles ...

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

Eating Kix without adding sugar is dumb.

cwkiii, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

Kix is not inherently sweet, is it?

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

Not really. There's like, the slightest hint of sweetness, but it practically begs you to dump sugar all over it.

cwkiii, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's actually healthier for me to just go w/ pre-sweetened cereals b/c otherwise my inclination is to pile on the spoonfuls, but stuff like Wheaties, Grape Nuts & Wheat Chex w/ sugar added is SO GOOD.

Broney, Pt. 1 (Pillbox), Thursday, 20 September 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

Pretty sure the only cereals this is OK with are plain oatmeal, Grape-Nuts, and All-Bran.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Thursday, 20 September 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

I put sugar on Bran Flakes.

When I first read this I was like WTF? Who would add sugar to cereal because it seems so weird to me now but I then remembered my mom putting sugar on top of my rice krspies as a kid and how good the left ever sugar milk was. SO GOOD!

If I have cereal these days it's usually Kashi which is sweet and would be weird to add sugar to anyway.

I generally eat oatmeal for breakfast and don't put sugar in that.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 20 September 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

honey in oatmeal is the way to go

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 20 September 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

I usually just put fruit in it and it's sweet enough but if I do want it sweeter I'll add either a small bit of honey or maple syrup.

There's already enough sugar in most cereals for me, even the "adult" ones. I don't eat the kids cereals any more, except for a once-per-decade box of Cap'n Crunch, for nostalgia reasons.

I did compare the calorie level of a non-sugared ceral (Shredded Wheat) with an "adult" sugared equivalent (Wheaties, probably) and a kid's cereal, and they're actually not that different, maybe 15-20% more calories at each step.

nickn, Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

haven't wanted sugar on any cereal since i was 10

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

i'm too lazy to cut up fruit for oatmeal so will just plop applesauce in there

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

completely plain oatmeal is literally the only breakfast item in the entire supermarket that doesn't have sugar in it afaik

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

Shredded Wheat (can't remember the brand, but it's the famous one) is just wheat. Maybe Wheatabix too? But it is the only I know that's unsweetened.

nickn, Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Taste buds like a bit of sugar. That's why it is added to so many processed foods. It is also why it is so easy to overdo the sugar. Obv there is nothing inherently wrong about sprinkling some sugar on breakfast cereal, but the overall potential for sugar abuse is extremely high, so yer wife might have a point. Or not. Depends on your entire diet and eating habits, really.

Aimless, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

i usually just eat cereal with vanilla yogurt which is sweet

ciderpress, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

disclaimer: the only cereals i eat are grape nuts and granola

ciderpress, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, cereal with yogurt sounds really good right now. I have been so busy I've forgotten how to eat anything but corn flakes with soy milk. I can't stand milk!

I went through a phase last year where I was all about the Lucky Charms and the Count Chocula. I should be ashamed! I have come to my senses, my favorite is Quaker Natural, if not oatmeal. Always will be.

But if you're diet-minded, a big bowl of choco whatever is better than ice cream! Also try malto-meal if you're having a chocolate craving.

I haven't added sugar to cereal since I was a kid. Have added apple concentrate stuff when it was around.
Have also bought some chocolatey or honeyed cereals before.
Tend to eat a mix of granola, muesli & bran flakes but sometimes they get other things mixed in too.

Oh yeah did bung in cinnamon powder with stuff before too.
Then mix it together then add milk.

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

Unless by breakfast cereal you mean oatmeal, and by sugar you mean brown sugar, then no.
