BTW I have heard from multiple sources that a lot of the waiters in the chinese restaurants in chinatown/LES used to speak yiddish since they had so much jewish clientele.

well I don't think it's just 'more common' - and tbf it's not just confined to the jewish dude <> asian girl pairing, the white guy <> asian girl phenomenon is p widespread. there are probably interesting sociological and gender role issues at play here but of course i'm not a social scientist

H invited our neighbors (two kids who are watched during the day by their Chinese grandmother) for an impromptu playdate after seeing the grandmother (who speaks virtually no English and cares for the kids) roaming the hallways in boredom. The grandmother went to her apartment and came back with an envelope with $20 in it for Chinese New Year. Are we supposed to give her/them something in return?

I mean if we just give THEM $20, doesn't that defeat the purpose? But if we give them more, it seems competitive and if we give less it seems cheap. So how does this work?

That's a good idea. Parents are really nice -- they've gotten our kids birthday gifts (and we did the same in return) even though we haven't really had the change to hang out.
