There are seemingly a million people with my real name, so in answer to the OP's questions: no / not bothered / doesn't affect me

a great poke for Jet Set Willy (snoball), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

It's generally OK with it.. My Belle & Sebastian past would preclude a political career, of course.

Alba, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

Oh I just copied the result that happened to be on the screen at the time, I am actually the first result on the first page.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

I never used to be that discoverable, but I just did a search the other day and I'm like the 3rd result

I feel kinda weird about it idk

Not really, I don't show up until near the bottom of the second page. And even then it's not anything particularly personal or interesting.

Well there are tons of knockoffs in my case...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

Last time I googled my name a few months ago, one of the top links was to what was claimed to be a nude video of someone who shares my not-terribly-common name. Thankfully that seems to have vanished or at least fallen down the search results - now, though, my Twitter is on the front page and my work email and phone number are on the second.

So - pretty discoverable, though thankfully googlers looking for me will no longer be able to see the genitals of one of my namesakes and think they belong to me.

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

I shared a name with a famous TV host of the 60s and was nigh undiscoverable. then I took my wife's last name, which is super rare, so if you know it you got me.

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

At work today some co-workers were checking out a new hire (that they hadn't met yet) on Linked In and thought it sweet that he'd updated his company info already. About 10 seconds later I heard one of them yell 'He's got a blog!! I've found his blog!'. So yeah I'm pretty glad I'm not that discoverable. Although I'd never do a blog with my real name.

kinder, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

having run a website for more than a fucking decade with my real name buried in the meta, and suchlike, it amazes me just how hard it is to find me.

however, i love the fact that if you search for me, and then hit images, the second image is one of sarah nixey advising that its not me :

proper makes me chuckle that.

I am 5 of 10 of the results on the first page for my name, in quotes; and two of the first four image results. Doesn't bother me, nobody is looking for me.

a shark with a rippling six pack (Phil D.), Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

The painter in NYC, the family practitioner in Idaho, the 16th century member of the English Parliament and a few other Crumps have me boxed out. I quit looking at page 12.

Death Grits 2 (WmC), Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

9 of the 10 results on the first page are for me. So fairly discoverable, I guess, but not for much more than Facebook and Twitter and random sites that pull names from Facebook and Twitter. It's actually fairly surprising to me that a number of people share my (slightly uniquely-spelled) name.

Old Lunch, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

I got tired of clicking through the results. Surprised because I used to come in much higher. I must have fixed that somehow.

Jeff, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

All but one hit on the first page of Google results. Mostly work stuff.

tish tosch (seandalai), Thursday, 27 September 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

I've got a not totally rare but fairly uncommon name, but if anyone from school were to google me, they would think I was now the proud owner of a kitchen unit company.

Are you all checking logged-out and via a proxy? Google will skew your results otherwise, in fact it will still do it based on your location.

Looking through http://hidemyass.com/, which I'm not sure is doing the job, 9 out of 10 are me. I do try and push my name online as I'm a freelancer though, and my name isn't very common.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

mark e, despite what some SEO "gurus" may claim, Meta information is usually ignored by search engines because some SEO "gurus" abused it in the early days.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 22:41 (thirteen years ago)

this could make for a good reverse-googling game. do i have enough knowledge of both NYC painters and 16th century members of parliament to find the common name??

Right or wrong, It's the truth! (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 27 September 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

mark e, despite what some SEO "gurus" may claim, Meta information is usually ignored by search engines because some SEO "gurus" abused it in the early days.

to be honest, i care not.
but its always interested me given that my site is very google friendly (i.e. 100% basic text), and yet, my site never appears when looking for me.
so i suspect you are correct in the reasoning ..

mark e, Thursday, 27 September 2012 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

not even on page 5 so i stopped looking. if i put in "music" or something then it's in the first few links.

There are seemingly a million people with my real name, so in answer to the OP's questions: no / not bothered / doesn't affect me

This, plus the fact that a number of famous people have my name, meaning i couldn't find myself unless I went 100s of pages into a search. Hurray!

computers are the new "cool tool" (James Morrison), Thursday, 27 September 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

The Most Typical and Popular Girl Rider (Crabbits), Thursday, 27 September 2012 23:42 (thirteen years ago)

i'm the only person with my full name (married name), but all the results are either public fb posts (mostly to my friend's art page) or stuff related to the small press i run.

just1n3, Friday, 28 September 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

I am the only person with any of my name combos and am very easy to find. I guess it's pretty weird but I don't think about it too much.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 28 September 2012 01:09 (thirteen years ago)

I'm all over the first page of results, due to uncommon spelling of 1st name. Searching for my previous name (changed in 2003 when married to Mr. Jaq) brings up a pile of ancient archived stuff (1997 onward) - again due to v. uncommon name.

Someone who wanted to get back in touch found me recently from a reference I left for our cat-sitter!

Jaq, Friday, 28 September 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

Google results #1 through #6 and I'm fine with that. I'd rather own all those results than be mixed up with the high school Tennis star in New Jersey or the rednecky dude in Montana.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 28 September 2012 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

Page 6 of Google results. Extreme metal dude who shares my name has fallen to #3 on page 1 due to Linkedin creeps.

cwkiii, Friday, 28 September 2012 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

My family name is unusual -- everybody who has it is relatively close kin of mine, even though I don't know all of them -- and as far as I know I'm the only person ever to have my first and last name. So, yeah, every single Google result for my name is me.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 28 September 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

ha I have one of those surnames where everyone with it is closely related too but there is STILL another person with my first and last name. lucky for me they have almost no internet presence so I'm #1

li'l sebastian, Friday, 28 September 2012 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

For a long long time searching "trayce" resulted in the very top hit being my fricking livejournal. People pay big money to achieve such aims, and I dont even want it! (nfi why its the case).

Now its knocked down to #2. My name seems common for some teenage boy who is big on youtube, and some band.

My full real name is the name of a scriptwriter known for a few Buffy eps, so I just dont come up trhat way at all (maybe buried 4 pages in is some of my published writing from college days).

frances boredom coconut (Trayce), Friday, 28 September 2012 04:00 (thirteen years ago)

you can find a bit of info about me from googling my name but i've been pretty good about keeping my internet aliases unlinked from my name over the years so you'd have to do some intentional digging to get any real dirt

ciderpress, Friday, 28 September 2012 04:05 (thirteen years ago)

A search on "aimless" in Google did not produce one reference to me in the first dozen pages. Being aimless, apparently I am hard to hit.

irl, i have given ilx the mystic key for discovering my real life name and, for the preternaturally persistant, enough clues to eventually discover my place of residence, which combined with my real name would unlock untold storehouses of data about me, mainly worthless. However, this key is buried in such overwhelming mounds of ilx detritus that I doubt any sane person would ever pursue me to the end of my rabbit hole.

Aimless, Friday, 28 September 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

without my middle name, not even slightly. with it, not til the third page where some bandcamp pages i'm mentioned on start turning up

Nhex, Friday, 28 September 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

I used to be almost the entirety of the first couple of pages, now I'm the last result on the first page (being cited on someone else's blog from 2001). if yr not googling within Australia I bet it's much further back. Sad to see there's another gov't name me on the IMDB now though.

however, i love the fact that if you search for me, and then hit images, the second image is one of sarah nixey advising that its not me :

ha ha, another ilxor's display name is mis-represented by a pretty girl on that same page too

┐(´ー`)┌ (sic), Friday, 28 September 2012 05:10 (thirteen years ago)

As far as I can tell I am the only person in the history of the world with my name, as my last name is incredibly uncommon in the US and my first name is incredibly uncommon in the country of my last name's origin (where it is still fairly unique).

Google result are all me, and sadly number 2 is something I posted on usenet in 1994 about how awesome it is to smoke weed and listen to Jane's Addiction. Good times.

toby, Friday, 28 September 2012 09:15 (thirteen years ago)

My name's common enough that I don't show up in the first 10 pages of results.

The fact that both my surname and forename are also regular English words probably helps obscure me a bit as well.
