It seems like I can't have a conversation with a stranger without one of these films being quoted. And then the person getting MAD at me for not recognizing a fairly arcane Princess Bride quote (and then me secretly feeling like I **should** have recognized it because I grew up Mormon). Why aren't people quoting Wallace Shawn in My Dinner With Andre with the same alacrity?

I voted Spinal Tap because it's funnier! I've seen The Princess Bride dozens of times but the love story never did anything for me. I guess I don't have a heart!

spinal tap because its r rating put it far off the radar of all brass instrument playing zoobies.

oh to live in a world where people quoted wallace shawn hissing/seething with rage in 'vanya on 42nd street'.

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:26 (twelve years ago)

Tap definitely, though I may have to give this some thought because:

My irl wedding was performed by at the office of the Nevada Commissioner of Marriages by a gentleman who wore not 1 but 2 hearing aids and had a speech impediment so pronounced as to cause the entire ceremony to resemble that of Peter Cook's in the Princess Bride. He literally said 'mawwiage' what felt like 300 times in those few short minutes and we all tried very very hard not to die of laughter

that makes the movie 100% funnier to me now having lived through that
but I have a feeling this will still be Tap

The Most Typical and Popular Girl Rider (Crabbits), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago)

PB has some good parts and is enjoyable but I've known too many people who were really into it and quoted it so much that it put me off it in general. Sort of.

While on a Wallace Shawn topic, I love the American Splendor where Harvey meets him and realizes he can't ride celebrity coattail off him

'pb' is kind of unbearably cutesy but it is narrated by peter falk, which goes a long way toward making anything tolerable.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:06 (twelve years ago)

I have a feeling that for most ilxors, their attitudes toward these two movies will devolve entirely from their enthusiasms and anxieties during adolescence, when (probably) they first saw them.

Spinal Tap is just a very long string of sharply satiric gags and skits about rock bands, but rock bands are at the very center of existance for most adolescents and satire is the ne plus ultra of adolescent humor, so ST ought to win this in crushing fashion.

PB sustains itself artfully from start to finish with hardly a lull. However, it is too whimsical and its humor is too gentle to appeal to most teenagers None of its jokes are likely to inspire you to blow cola through your nose. I like it better than ST bcz it stands up to repeat viewing better for me. Not you, me.

When did you guys first watch PB?

Aimless, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:15 (twelve years ago)

I didn't see PB til I was at least 18, maybe older. I enjoyed it, and I do watch it if it's on TV...but Spinal Tap I guess speaks to me more idk

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago)

love both but voted tap pretty easily. curious what if any other reiner flicks would've gotten votes if this had been a full reiner poll - stand by me probably, maybe when harry met sally i guess, pretty sure someone here would've actually voted for north, maybe some weirdo votes for one of the sorkins. kind've weird that of those three 70s sitcom stars turned movie directors ron howard is the one who pulled away from the pack.

xpost lol at pb not appealing to teenagers. lol at pb not appealing primarily to teenagers for that matter.

I first saw The Princess Bride in high school, probably age 16

It was a widely popular movie, especially among the girls I was hitting on

set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago)

love story between nigel and david in spinal tap way more touching and nuanced and believable than love story between wesley and the princess in princess bride i think

balls, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago)

ah! I see my idiocy now. i was thinking mainly in terms of teenaged boys, bcz males are such a big contingent of ilxors, esp ilm. pardon craved.

my first post to this thread was going to be "movies teenaged boys endlessly quote vs movies teenaged girls endlessly quote" and then ILX women started posting "SPINAL TAP" and I was all "huh maybe I am underselling the cross gender appeal of Spinal Tap"

Exciting, this computer magic!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 5 October 2012 00:06 (twelve years ago)

Also, the "This goes to 11" may be as tired, but it sets a real precedent in pop culture for those kind of jokes, where the humor is in the character not being clever enough to think of anything to say. Reminds me a LOT of what Homer did constantly on the Simpsons. Surely that kind of humor has been around for a while, but i can't really think of another, earlier, popular usage of it.

the princess bride is one of those rare movies whose source material is substantially better

Mordy, Friday, 5 October 2012 00:19 (twelve years ago)

That's what I love about Tap's pastiches; they're not derivative of specific songs, and can't even be easily traced to a single source/band. I mean, "Flower People" kinda seems vaguely Moody Bluesish, but only because McKean kind of sounds like Justin Hayward.

buzza, Friday, 5 October 2012 01:16 (twelve years ago)

"I just sucked 5 years of your LIFE away" has run through my mind on a constant loop for like 20+ years but I don't think I run around quoting it. (But generally I don't quote anything. I find it kind of irritating when people communicate that way.)

Still going with Tap because it's funnier even if PB is permanently ingrained in my head thanks to 8th grade friend who made me watch it 500x because she was a sap.

Aimless, Saturday, 6 October 2012 03:03 (twelve years ago)

One of my fave Spinal Tap gags is buried in the credits, when DiBergi asks if the band's white, male fan base means it may be a little racist:

David St. Hubbins: We say, "Love your brother." We don't say it really, but...
Nigel Tufnel: We don't literally say it.
David St. Hubbins: No, we don't say it.
Nigel Tufnel: We don't really, literally mean it.
David St. Hubbins: No, we don't believe it either, but...
Nigel Tufnel: But we're not racists.
David St. Hubbins: But that message should be clear, anyway.
Nigel Tufnel: We're anything but racists.

four years pass...

Last year, Harry Shearer filed a $125 million lawsuit against Vivendi, the French movie distributor that owns the rights to 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap, for paying Shearer, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Rob Reiner less than $200 in revenue from the film over a 30-year period. Guest, McKean, and Reiner joined the lawsuit in March, and together they’re demanding $400 million in damages due to what Shearer calls “Hollywood accounting,” or the common practice of studios masking profits — particularly from things like merchandising, music, and home video — from creators and writers.

Shearer is not new to bringing his demands for fair pay into the public realm — see his Simpsons contract negotiations in 2015 — so it makes sense, then, that he’s become the official spokesman for the Spinal Tap lawsuit as seen in his Rolling Stone op-ed earlier this month as well as a great in-depth piece at Bloomberg Businessweek last week:

“There is almost an overwhelming asymmetry that faces the creative artist,” he says. “You get told over and over again, ‘Well, it’s just a little cult picture, it doesn’t mean anything.’ And you internalize it. We love what we do, and they know it. And that is a rusty bayonet that we’ve handed them to insert in our innards whenever they want.”
