jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

uh ?

anthony, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James, that was a terrible pun. Go to your room.

DG, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best part of "Romancing the Stone", that's for sure. What makes for a brilliant movie producer, anyway?

Kris, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gettin Pulp Fiction made for one.

anthony, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thorougly enjoyed the scene in L.A. Confidential where he gets smacked senseless. Excellent stuff.

two years pass...
The best EVER. Right? EVER!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

You know he's going to be the guy really governing California.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm kind of obsessed with him

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't he shut down Jersey Films in the last year?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

We just had a post about him on the fishnet thread. Specifically about the foot job he got in War of the Roses. Um, but aside from that, this guy rules. Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile -- two of my favorite movies EVER.

twenty-one years pass...

I watched la confidential on a Trans pacific flight recently and DDV was a highlight

He's a national treasure, one of a kind. Sort of ... beyond character actor?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 August 2025 02:46 (eight months ago)

His mugging is so casual. He's like Edward G. Robinson.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 August 2025 02:51 (eight months ago)

Good comparison. DD has great comic timing, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 August 2025 02:53 (eight months ago)

He's great and is maybe underrated for his ability to make his basic character work in a range of settings — mostly but not only comedy, and in comedy he can play either light or dark. His Penguin is legit disturbing.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 22 August 2025 03:00 (eight months ago)

He has this weird way of simultaneously playing the straight man and the human cartoon. Like, it's been decades since I've seen Twins, but as I remember it he's more or less like Tom Cruise in Rain Man, but, you know, Danny DeVito.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 August 2025 03:05 (eight months ago)

On the qt and in the down low and strictly whatever dude

calstars, Friday, 22 August 2025 03:15 (eight months ago)

I thought this might be about that crazy Golden Bachelor episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. That was a big DeVito showcase and it was great that they got him working with Carol Kane.

earlnash, Friday, 22 August 2025 05:03 (eight months ago)

no notes for him in LA Confidential

Need to rewatch Get Shorty

calstars, Friday, 22 August 2025 21:51 (eight months ago)

The three movies DeVito did with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner were really popular with me when I was a kid.

I'd like to see 'The War of the Roses' and 'Ruthless People' with Bette Midler again.

earlnash, Friday, 22 August 2025 22:08 (eight months ago)

There'd a War of the Roses remake out any day/month now, looks like Andy Samberg might be in the DeVito role.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 August 2025 22:15 (eight months ago)

It looks awful

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 August 2025 23:28 (eight months ago)

I somehow totally forget his worthwhile run as director: Throw Momma from the Train, War of the Roses, Hoffa and Death to Smoochy. Hoffa is pretty boilerplate, but that was to be expected. Smoochy kind of went for a Shakes the Clown kind of dark comedy, iirc, but no one talks about the former in any sort of positive light. Regardless, they all make me wish he directed more movies.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 August 2025 15:42 (eight months ago)

You forgot Matilda, the best of the bunch.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 August 2025 15:46 (eight months ago)

I did! It's not the best of the bunch, imo, but it's pretty good!
