michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Search Jean Gabin, Brad Dourif, Gloria Grahame (I can't see a separate actresses thread), Fred Ward (not so much for how good he is, but that he is one of the best ever indicators of a film being interesting), Ruth Gordon, Alison Steadman. I'm struggling to think of any I hate. Even Michael's fine nominations above - I liked these people in Big, Mork & Mindy and The Usual Suspects. I am too soft-hearted, or possibly soft-headed.

mbosa, Saturday, 28 September 2002 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

joe- what's wrong with cameron diaz.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 28 September 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

What can I say? She hasn't impressed me with her work to date. That smile of hers actually kind of scares me--it looks so goofy and blank, like a cupie doll. Guess I'm in the minority there...

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 28 September 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

well, i agree that she has been acting in some stinkers but she's OK. not for the destroy category you know.

double-destroy Gallo. Jesus Christ, who the hell actually enjoys what he does, anyway? (besides P.J. Harvey, that is....)

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 28 September 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

she's OK. not for the destroy category you know.

Okay, well, we could take her out and replace with Jeff "Eccentric Scientist" Goldblum.

Others in the Search pile:
David Warner
Jack Nance
Dwight Frye
William Forsythe

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 28 September 2002 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I detest almost everything I've heard about Gallo but I thought he was great in Buffalo 66. He looks like he's enjoying what he does.

fuckit. i just hate his face.

gabriel rodriguez-doerr (gabe), Sunday, 29 September 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Vincent Gallo, in that pic, looks a bit like that Scouse actor who got stabbed in Cracker (he was the sarge, I think), was in Our Friends in The North, and was in Strumpet. And was in that anti-joyriding advert that everyone sees in the cinemas, he's the one laughing at the bloodied bodies beside him. Doesn't he?

absolutely agree w/ caine and connery here and i don't like paltrow.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Why Caine, Nick? Granted, he's been in more than his share of crap (Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, Blame It on Rio, Jaws: The Revenge, Mr. Destiny), but how about: Sleuth w/Olivier, The Man Who Would Be King, Mona Lisa, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Noises Off...

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 29 September 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunno - maybe I've just missed all his good films, but like Connery and Courtenay he just seems to have had one perfect part in the 60s (in his case, Alfie) and somehow drifted through into this position of 'respected elder statesman'. I think it was seeing his shoddy performance in 'Hannah and her sisters' again recently that cemented my disdain. Also, his whinging about how he wasn't appreciated in his own country recently. Or was that Connery?

I can't believe anyone would want to destroy Rob Lowe! Did you not see St. Elmo's Fire?

Though most actors annoy me by default, I think the only one I can get worked up enough to destroy would be Julia Roberts. She is so thoroughly overrated in every way.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you not see St. Elmo's Fire?

Surely that for many is the reason why he should be destroyed. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I care not what other people think, he is wonderful and grebt. Not that I watch the West Wing, but his 80s work cannot be surpassed.

He had a wonderful mullet.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Between this and Dom DeLuise, I have no doubt that Nicole's heart is of the eighties.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Harrison Ford? Roger Moore? Seriously? Better than Michael Douglas? In what?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 October 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ironically. Roger's safari suits, submersible Lotus and bad puns helped me tune not only into 007 but into films in general. Watch him as "Seymour Goldfarb" in The Cannonball Run. He's great!

I liked Harrison Ford in The Conversation and The Mosquito Coast.

Just came back from Red Dragon and I'm thinking destroy Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It's the same old mannerisms every time, I'm sick of it. Kinda like Catherine Keener, except I still love her. PSH was SO HORRIBLE as a drag queen in Flawless. It was a Joel Schumacher movie, though, so maybe I should cut him some slack. Also, destroy Edward Norton, cause he's just so blah. And Nathan Lane, although his scene in Goldmember is the funniest thing in the film.

And destroy Jennifer Aniston as a film actress. Big deal she can play dumpy, it's not a "revelation".

Search:

Mick Jagger, he really should act more.
Sam Rockwell--I can't believe they're pushing him as the next big thing, finally.

he was also grebt in "True West" with John C Reilly, where in the perf I saw he played the violent thief to JCR's sensitive writer.... slurred alcoholic redneck accent, and a very dangerous edge to him, like he could snap at any moment... definitely not a one-note actor

Richard Beckinsale

Kind of impressed this spinoff movie of the early 70s Richard Beckinsale/Paula Wilcox sitcom, "The Lovers", has so far mentioned Andy Warhol, the Grateful Dead and Schopenhauer.

I feel like Neil Morrissey is due a late career renaissance. He's never stopped getting regular work in fairly high-profile shows but nothing that's really cut through and impressed itself on the national consciousness over the last decade or so, plus he's mainly been doing serious police procedural stuff lately. If someone gives him the lead role in a lighter comedy-drama I can see there being an outpouring of affection for Neil Morrissey, elevation to national treasure status, people asserting that we as a nation had overlooked and taken for granted Neil Morrissey etc. If I were a tv executive I'd be trying to make this happen.
