Best chocolate-covered wafer

Had a bit of a thing for chocolate-covered wafers lately, but what's the best? Your favourite? The platonic ideal of the concept? What weirdness squezzes into this particular taxonomy of confectionary? Am I missing any? And wtf actually is a wafer, how do you make it?

Also I always loved the bit on the Tunnock's wrapper that reads '4 Million of these sugary bastards made, sold, and eaten every week'.

Yeah, Club's just biscuit. Not seen a Blue Ribband in years.

Ferrero Rocher is one of the few chocolate snacks I actually enjoy, though I kind of want to vote Tunnock's just because it's Tunnock's.

emil.y, Thursday, 4 October 2012 10:42 (twelve years ago)

let's stop fucking around here, drifter all the way

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 4 October 2012 10:42 (twelve years ago)

Tunnock's Caramel Wafer - I think of this as being the platonic essence; there's no fancy branding or product name, no clever shape; it's just a brick of chewy, crispy wafer & caramel with a lick of chocolate hiding its modesty.

Kit Kat / Kit Kat Chunky - This was probably my introduction to the form as a nipper. Residual affection, but not eaten one in years.

Drifter - Nestle, sadly (as are KKs, aren't they?), but there's a really satisfying chewiness to these.

Time Out - Pleasant, but a bit lightweight and brittle, which is probably caused by the use of flake-y chocolate in the middle rather than caramel.

Lion Bar - Very satisfyingly meaty, from memory. Nestle again? Not had one in a long time.

Kinder Bueno - A favourite of mine, as a lover of hazelnutty milky goodness, but as a shell of wafer rather than a sandwich, it feels like a different thing, slightly.

Ferrero Rocher - Debated not including this weird ball-shaped aberration, but they are lush, and technically qualify.

Occasionally we buy those big bags of little continetal wafers from the supermarket. I imagine Lidl or Aldi would probably be a good place to get them. Not all chocolate-covered, but awesome.

Voting kitkat chunky because I have lately been enjoying the Peanut Butter variant.

Wikipedia seems to have got rid of its huge chart of kitkat varieties. Shame; the Japanese cult of kitkat is… idk… I don't really understand it.

oh, ok. found a list of Japanese kitkat flavours:

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Thursday, 4 October 2012 11:01 (twelve years ago)

Pink wafers own all the puny chocolate-covered wafers.

emil.y, Thursday, 4 October 2012 11:03 (twelve years ago)

The "Sport" in Ritter Sport comes from the idea that you pop off a single cubelet whilst skiing or biking or whatever for a quick sugar boost. The German slogan is "Square. Practical. Good." Wafers are also used as sports nutrition among German-speaking family skiers to this day. I am not kidding.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 4 October 2012 20:43 (twelve years ago)

Give it up.

On the basis of a linkless appeal to german authority? Not likely. I checked the german site (knew my grade B in GCSE german would pay off one day), and they quote Clara Ritter's argument that it should fit in a jacket pocket and not break etc. Putting aside whether this is a regular 3-pocket sports jacket or a nebulous hiking/skiing coat, there's no mention I can find of it being named after ease of eating *during sports* like you said. Unless yr gonna link up some support for that, I'll consider our delicious, chocolatey beef at an end ;)

Although all this is making me wish I could break off a few squares of Ritter Sport Waffel, eat them whilst engaged in non-sporting activities, and then return the suitably-shaped remnant of the bar to the breast pocket of my tailored tweed jacket, just as the makers intended.
