Sport. Got stuck at one of 2 tables people sat at from my course on Monday night and the rest of the table proceeded to talk about hurling.
I sat there thinking it was rude to leave, for several minutes, then got up and moved to other table and instantly found conversation interesting.

Does mean I'm less fit than I should be probably though. Used to dance quite frequently until I moved too far out of town to get home easily from wahtever clubs

I think I have a thing in my brain that just tunes out sport talk the moment it happens. If sport comes up in conversation or on telly all I hear is "blahblahblahblah" MAybe if I didn't have this handy cerebral device I might learn something, but sadly it's there to stay.

Not appropriate for cinema but I do like zoning out to silent era documentary footage that has been speed corrected and upscale and even colorized. The Peter Jackson Great War doc had its intended effect, making the war emotionally resonate as an event closer to “us”than the turn of the century.

I think the speed correction and upscale haze is, for me, less uncanny than the hand-crank motion and high contrast.

LOL forgot all about it and didn't notice anything even though I've been sitting facing an open window pretty much all night.

Boring imo. Yeah some of the shadows were funny but I was struggling to muster excitement.

Seeing people outside and randomly chatting about it was nice.

The coverage of this is so irritating too. Sky News going down to Spain to interview some hippies on a beach when there's another one in Spain next year which will be three times as long!

Guardian did the treating it's readers like children routine ("Please be safe and here is how not to burn your retinas!")

I was not fussed about the eclipse, but figure dI'd go down to the local park for a run anyway (hey at least it might be cooler). Bumped into a colleague and his friends who were picnicking and having a wild time figuring out how to look at the sun without looking at it. It was nothing spectacular in the end - just got a bit dim and the light was a little odd, but ultimately not unlike a cloud passing over. Still, had fun, and then ran for a bit and went home

I’m interested in astronomy in theory, and I love seeing photos of cool space shit, but I really can’t be bothered about the stars in the sky apart from loving the way

Don't get me wrong, a total eclipse would be awesome but getting a wee bit darker for a few minutes, such that you might not even notice (like I didn't) is nothing to get too exercised about.

Xpost: When there was an eclipse here two years ago I was mostly indifferent, if not cynical about how people getting overexcited about a spectacle. But when it happened it was a powerful experience. It made the fact that we are on a planet, in a solar system, in the cosmos, palpable in a rare way that we experienced collectively. I dunno, felt more benign than a tv show or sporting event or whatever (unless you look at it, and I definitely don't blame the guardian for having to remind adults to not do that)

The 2024 total eclipse was a completely amazing thing to experience.

Also, there's some confusing messaging about safety precautions. I'd previously always heard that you should never look at a eclipse directly at any point, but places like NASA say that it's okay to look directly at a total eclipse in the brief period of totality (when the sun is totally covered.) the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse (partial in my area) was a spooky feeling, a gauzy dim-ish light I’d never experienced before.

There is a big difference between a total eclipse and a partial eclipse, I get it.

But even partial eclipses can be neat, if they're big partial eclipses. We had one six months before the total eclipse that made the neighborhood look like how old movies filmed night scenes during the day with a big filter, like "Night of the Living Dead".

Sure, parts of my neighborhood resembles "Night of the Living Dead" all the time, but still.

We had eclipse specs for the partial, which helped. Some good friends are moving to Southern Spain, so 2 August 2027 for the next total is happening. I missed 1999 and now I find myself very much wanting to see this.

Yes as I said upthread there's interviews on the news with people who'd gone all the way to Spain to see it... and it's going to happen in Spain again, a year later, and for much longer. It's not like anyone's going to have to wait 50 years till the next one.

Had a great time watching it in Porto, not total but close enough, the weird dusk feeling towards the end was rad. They had also set up some weird entertainer dj booth previous to the main event, played "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" and also for some reason "The Macarena".
