Sport. Got stuck at one of 2 tables people sat at from my course on Monday night and the rest of the table proceeded to talk about hurling.
I sat there thinking it was rude to leave, for several minutes, then got up and moved to other table and instantly found conversation interesting.

Does mean I'm less fit than I should be probably though. Used to dance quite frequently until I moved too far out of town to get home easily from wahtever clubs

Stevolende, Thursday, 4 October 2012 11:46 (thirteen years ago)

I think I have a thing in my brain that just tunes out sport talk the moment it happens. If sport comes up in conversation or on telly all I hear is "blahblahblahblah" MAybe if I didn't have this handy cerebral device I might learn something, but sadly it's there to stay.

Why should we know better?

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2026 14:51 (one week ago)

I don't give one shit about professional or college sports and don't gamble. I care about books, film, and music. The Oscars acknowledges on occasion some of my favorite movies of the year. No need to get smug about your disdain.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2026 14:54 (one week ago)

I no longer care passionately about the Oscars, like I did when I was young, nor do I instinctively loathe them, as I did during the surlier years of my 20s and early 30s. Which is to say, I glanced at the noms this morning and likely won't think about them again until Oscar night, when I may or may not remember to watch the ceremony.

cryptosicko, Thursday, 22 January 2026 14:55 (one week ago)

I don't even watch the ceremony anymore, actually; it goes on too late.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2026 15:04 (one week ago)

Why should we know better?

That was hyperbolic grouchiness, not an actual moral stance. I find the ceremony unwatchable and the discourse about what shoulda won exhausting - why would we give the Academy enough respect to care what they think - plus one of the reasons I love films, books and music like you do is that unlike sports they're not supposed to be a competition.

professional and college sport

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2026 15:15 (one week ago)

I dunno, I don't want to irritate you again but that mentality is absolutely alien to how I think of culture. There are so many delights, so much that mutually intersects and reinforces, "which is the best one?" feels besides the point. On a naked capitalistic level of course yeah it's competition - time you spend watching one film is time spent not watching another - but I'd hate to reduce art to that.

As to "if you're creating them", that may or may not be true, I don't - but it's not filmmakers that are responsible for my oscar overexposure complaint.

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 22 January 2026 15:16 (one week ago)

I make many lists and I stress that they're not hierarchical. They're an attempt to think about the art a second or third time and to introduce my audience to them; they're also just fun in themselves, because readers will make their own picks which often poke me into reassessing this or that.

When art is on the marketplace it competes for limited funds in a crowded space. Pulitzers, Bookers, and Nobles are as much rocket flares to remind me of something of potential interest as they are remunerative for the artists. I know Adorno would disagree.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2026 15:23 (one week ago)

So do I! But an individual's list is surely not comparable to the Oscars; we are not talking about lists but a hierarchy of winners and losers with pretensions to objectivity.

When art is on the marketplace it competes for limited funds in a crowded space.

Yes, as I said, this is undeniable, but viewing our own personal relationships to art within this framework I find neither rewarding nor necessary.

Pulitzers, Bookers, and Nobles are as much rocket flares to remind me of something of potential interest as they are remunerative for the artists.

Yes, I accept those as necessary evils and have even been taken to task on here for viewing the Nobel as basically a tool to shine a light on a neglected author and nothing else. But "oh wow haven't heard of that movie, guess I'll check it out" is not something I have ever heard in an Oscars conversation amongst movie buffs.

I know Adorno would disagree.

I haven't read Adorno, outside of some old ilx threads explaining why he is bad and hated.

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 22 January 2026 15:41 (one week ago)

Never cared much about the Oscars unless something freaky happens in the ceremony. It does have a habit of producing a lot of memorable car crash content to wake up to, and its been fun watching other ppl comment through it on twitter.

And, as I live for content.

Tue films? It gave Parasite the best film once right? That was cool.

Like, to deny that the reason many of the films chosen for Oscar noms is because they have money behind them in the first place— which is true of much art and many artists— is to actually not understand how the system works.

Money poured into projects begets awards. Those without money can go fuck themselves as far as the market and the award-granting councils are concerned. This goes for most forms of art, even the least remunerative, like poetry.

ftr I think Adorno is not bad, his infamous and overly belaboured aesthetic (mis)judgements aside. Also, there is some irony in Adorno being a borad joek, when said borad nowadays dedicates the majority of its discussions to trying to figure out why people love authoritarianism

I have read Donald Duck, and also the academic papers explaining why he is bad and hated (are the Donaldisten known in English speaking spaces?).

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 23 January 2026 17:26 (six days ago)

D.O.N.A.L.D. (Deutsche Organisation nichtkommerzieller Anhänger des lauteren Donaldismus or the German Organization of Non-commercial Devotees of Pure Donaldism) is the Donaldistic society of Germany. Founded by Hans von Storch, it has presented many contributions to donaldistic research through its fanzine Der Donaldist. It also holds several meetings and one congress each year.

Donaldists have risen in rank and are actively infiltrating the culture pages of several important newspapers in Germany, such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, where they subtly install quotations easily recognisable to fans of the comics. The German study of Donaldism is decisively influenced by the German translations of Barks's comic books by Erika Fuchs.

obvious old hat (rob), Friday, 23 January 2026 17:45 (six days ago)

The one issue of the Donaldist I read had an essay highlighting Scrooge McDuck's inhumane (induckane?) capitalist treatment of his enpolyees as well as his imperialistic adventuring.

It didn't shock me that much as I already preferred loser Donald and, even more, the slacker Peninha, introduced in the Brazilian comics.

In fact a good amount of my Disney reading came from non-US sources: Danish, Italian, Brazilian.

Walt Disney of course hated Donald Duck and loved Mickey - he couldn't understand why audiences gravitated towards a non-heroic figure.

I'm sure Adorno would have much to say about this, I might read him yet.

that said, both he and other observers put the grade of that climb at around 5.9 on the YDS. this is not that difficult for someone of his abilities— he has climbed much harder routes both with and without ropes.
