apology of an unfaithful culture consumerist

when you apprehend a cultural object (music, film, visual art etc) do you sometimes willfully diverge from it's intended meaning to "enhance it" or correct it in some way for your pleasure or interest, like patch up a plot hole so you didn't waste your time , make up lyrics/feelings from a song in a language you don,t speak or change the context of a story to plant it into another genre , etc?

It depends what you mean by "apprehend."

I live in Portland. In Portland we apprehend cultural objects any way we like.

apprehend? you mean appropriate?

I can do this through omission. It's easy to ignore dodgy lyrics or a dumb movie scene.

Adding new pretend content seems like a harder trick. How do you sustain the pretense?

apprehend - from scholastic philosophy (via Joyce?) - to encounter a cultural object through one or more of the senses. cos you don't normally look at a sound or listen to a painting for example.

Sounds to me a bit like synaesthesia. I think I know what he's getting at but I'd have to work hard to think of any actual examples.

no i mean "apprehend" is used as a catch-all for any of the normal sensory modes of encountering something

three years pass...

"to encounter a cultural object through one or more of the senses"

yes , i never thought the choice of that word would be a hurdle : cultural objects are various and there are a variety of ways to ... shit i painted myself in that corner again. also i am drunk. joeks. but yea, different ways to experience and integrate them "live".

I knew what you meant. I do this all the time. Mostly via the fast forward and mute buttons. I suppose in the past I would have just picked up the needle.

tomboto: i use that too but moreso when i was a teen watching a few movies at the same time with satellite dish tech, estimating the narrative loss i could afford made by the dish physically moving slowly between em . that was then , and also you made me think of an idea i had a while ago: someone should make a repository of those shitty CAM pirated movies: often the sound is shit and it makes the dialog much better. works especially well with horror movies.

its not exactly the same idea i had when i made this thread but it's related: i had to fill the blanks when inevitably they had to be filled
