#2 but you can also vote #1

iatee, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 13:57 (twelve years ago)

same either way for me.

ledge, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago)

1 in equatorial regions, 2 in china, 3 everywhere else.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:05 (twelve years ago)

re #3, 'offworld colonies' clearly a big lie, what happens instead to the people who head for them though?

ledge, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago)

the same thing that happens to old ppl in the giver

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago)

replicants are slaves for the colonists so #2 and #3 are kinda the same

So Batty's attack ships off the shoulder of Orion are an implanted memory?

not exactly that, but i imagine something like small groups of humans surviving in barely inhabitable regions until climate disaster concludes

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:15 (twelve years ago)

blade runner obvs

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:16 (twelve years ago)

which is more optimistic: blade runner (unending dystopian cities) or mad max (post apocalyptic end of civilization)?

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:19 (twelve years ago)

they're not that dystopian really

iatee, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago)

i read some thing abt how when blade runner came out everyone was like 'oh no how awful the future' but then they showed it to some 2012 teens and they were all 'cool!' 'kawaii!' and started taking iphone pictures of it

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago)

I'd go for the former as I have had considerable more practice surviving in a dystopian city.

xxpost

blade runner wasn't so bad compared to like neuromancer or even bleaker cyberpunk genre stuff

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago)

Most likely 3 for a while, followed by several years of 1.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:36 (twelve years ago)

with or without human caused climate change 1 is an inevitability.

ciderpress, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 15:08 (twelve years ago)

Mad Max - if things get that bad, none of us are going to be around to have a poll about it.
Jetsons - yeah right and I'm Bugs Bunny...
Blade Runner - BR minus space colonisation minus flying cars minus replicants seems the most likely for the near future.

a great poke for Jet Set Willy (snoball), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 17:12 (twelve years ago)

br minus none of the above minuses

blade runner and war for the next hundred years. then we all become cyborgs (if you want to explore space you upgrade to full robot / simulation). future AI-iphones are brain implants installed during birth, I imagine the software programmed to grow up with you so it becomes your teacher / best friend at once and you can't never stop loving him / her (turn it off). bad part is that this is all centralized from nsagoobookzonple headquarters so they can remote control your whole life but whatever, the stuff is pretty cool and this is 2112 anyway, no once cares anymore. those who refuse the metallic parts and / or get caught visiting alternative networks are called equivalent term for terrorist-witch-communist-demon in the 22nd century. it's going to be awesome.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2017/01/23/some-addicts-are-so-desperate-for-drugs-that-theyre-now-taking-medication-prescribed-to-pets/?utm_term=.2791f0dd1119&tid=sm_tw&tid=sm_tw&tid=sm_tw

The first was on a Friday in October 2014, when Pereira took the injured 4-year-old dog to the Elizabethtown Animal Hospital, not far from Louisville. After the veterinarian sewed up a cut, Pereira requested Tramadol, a drug used to treat pain in both animals and humans. She said the pup had been prescribed the medication in the past and had responded well to it, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

So the vet gave it to her.

Three days later, she returned — saying her child had flushed the pills down the toilet.

So the vet gave her more.

But it was this third time, on Dec. 4, 2014, that the veterinarian became suspicions. The dog's old cut had not yet completely healed and the animal was back with another. Again, Pereira asked for Tramadol for the dog.

“That’s when I took notice,” Chad Bailey, the veterinarian, told The Washington Post in an interview last week. “The cut looked sharp and clean — not like the kind in nature when a dog is cut on a fence or in a fight.”

Police said Pereira had been intentionally wounding her dog and “vet shopping,” visiting vet after vet to obtain prescription medication for her pet, then taking it. Although these cases appear uncommon, authorities say they underscore the nation's widespread opioid epidemic, showing the lengths people go to obtain drugs for personal use or for sale on the street.

j., Monday, 23 January 2017 23:53 (eight years ago)

as far as the lengths that people go to obtain opioids "vet shopping" doesn't seem so severe

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 00:03 (eight years ago)

imo, taking the meds that a vet prescribed for your pet is very mild on the drug addiction self-degradation scale. deliberately harming your pet in order to get ahold of those meds obviously drops much lower on the scale, but it's still nowhere near the bottom.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/01/27/onlookers-yell-at-man-drowning-in-a-venice-canal-go-back-where-you-came-from/

As the man bobbed in the water, onlookers pulled out their smartphones.

“Go on, go back where you came from,”one man yelled. “Africa!” shouted another. “He is stupid. He wants to die,” said a third, caught on film. Someone in a nearby water bus threw out a life vest, but the man in the water didn't grab on. Spectators began to wonder if he was suicidal. One woman suggested to a neighbor that he was just pretending.

Finally, tourists at Venice's Grand Canal began to laugh as 22-year-old Pateh Sabally of Gambia drowned in the canal's icy waters.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/01/26/human-pig-hybrids-created-scientists-breakthrough-organ-transplants/

what do you guys think of the first human-animal hybrid they just created? it makes me feel very nervous. they are creating chimera embryos.

they want to grow organisms to harvest their organs for use in human, but they cannot use the organs currently produced. this is because they are mostly pig cells and they still want to perfect the mix. injecting human stem cells into a pig embryo is holding them back - what is to stop them from injecting human embryos with pig or other animal stem cells?

I feel there must be a badly formed joke about the police in there somewhere.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Saturday, 28 January 2017 01:17 (eight years ago)

Now a team at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in the US has combined both concepts and shown it is possible to grow human tissue within a pig. The achievement took four years, 1,500 pig embryos and the stem cells from 40 people.

“This is an important first step. Our next challenge is to guide the human cells into forming a particular organ in pigs.

“The ultimate goal is to grow functional and transplantable tissue or organs.”

To reach the current point, the scientists first created a rat-mouse hybrid by introducing rat cells into mouse embryos to see if animals could still develop using the DNA of another species.

After the tests were successful, the team genetically edited out part of the mouse DNA which is critical for the growth of organs, and repeated the experiment in the hope that the rat DNA would fill in the gaps.

As predicted, the rat cells completed areas which were missing in the mouse DNA, forming a rat heart, eyes and pancreas within the mouse.

The team then set about introducing human cells in pigs, a far more complicated procedure because pigs have a gestation period that is only one third as long as humans, so cells must be placed with perfect timing to match the developmental stage of the animal.

"It's as if the human cells were entering a freeway going faster than the normal freeway," added Dr Izpisua Belmonte. "If you have different speeds, you will have accidents.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 28 January 2017 01:18 (eight years ago)

The chimeras can also be used to help scientists understand early human development and the onset of disease, and even provide a testing platform for new drugs.

i played this video game!

when you accidentally create a giant monster pig covered in screaming human faces, no need to dispose of it, you can still inject it with experimental drugs!
