Scared about a Romney/Ryan presidency? Do something about it: VOTE for Obama before or on Election Day, and remind everyone else they need to, too. This is the thread for that, and for keeping the faith.

but let me add, controversially, if you live somewhere that'll be an obama landslide no matter what, consider voting for someone that has views that you actually support.

True that
― Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 01:05 (twelve years ago)
and let me add, controversially, if you live somewhere that'll be an obama or romney landslide no matter what, plz throw that third party vote to jill stein and not gary johnson. libertarian's have too much influence on 'national dialogue' or whatever as is and where that influence actually is felt is where they're 'wrong' (deregulation, privatization, dismantling of 20th century) and not where they're 'right' (civil liberties, weeeeed).

If you're in a panic about a good Romney poll, go to the Reassure Me thread. If Donald Trump's on the loose, it's the General Election thread. Fallout from one of the debates, you go back and find the right thread (there's three of them--probably no longer operative). If you're disgusted by something Obama's done, General Politics thread. If you want to urge people to vote, come here. If you're Canadian, you're free to wear out your welcome on any of them.

Im sure some here will be mad at me for saying this, but i want to encourage people not to vote third party this time around. In an election this close popular vote wise, that very well may come down to recounts and lawsuits the popular vote DOES matter, adding legitimacy to any dispute over the winner. but hey its your choice to make.

I dunno. The big local issues in my smallish town (pop. 30,000) are the races for mayor and city council, where a conservative group of pseudo-Tea Partiers are in the race. They are in a good position to win, in spite of the fact that my town leans liberal for the past few elections. The biggest reason why they are running so strongly is that, unlike most past elections, the conservatives are MUCH better organized. They went out and did the legwork starting more than a year ago, raised money, recruited candidates and created a network of supporters.
iow, they activated a LOT of volunteers putting in a LOT of hours. And my guess is they will take over the city government as a result. Take away all that volunteer effort and they wouldn't have stood a ghost of a chance.

Voted after work, surprised the line wasn't too bad. I didn't get a sticker but I did get two nice chocolate cupcakes from a bake sale. Oh yeah, two days ago I got something in the mail from the "Democratic City Committee" telling me thanks for registering as a Democrat, and by the way here's some helpful information for you- then they told me the wrong voting place in my precinct. Not sure if it was a fake letter trying to confuse people, or if we really have a Democratic City Committee and they are hella incompetent.

Voted in Shaker Heights, OH tonight. No waiting but it was steadily busy. When I went to the desk to turn in my ballot a woman headed me off and asked if I was in the right district (every desk pertains to a different district)- good on them (i was). Voted, though I live in DC so who gives a shit other that the people running for open city council and school board seats. Oh and I guess Elenor Holmes Norton and whoever the fuck is our shadow senator--oh whatever, they're fine with or without me.
Best part about voting in DC this year were three questions about whether or not to authorize resolutions preventing a city councilperson or mayor from continuing to serve if convicted of a felony while holding that office. Thanking u Marion Barry for making me put on my thinking cap for a minute there.

Voted! And scored a sticker. Lady was giving them out ahead of time while we were lining up so that they didn't forget at the end, lol.
notable today:polling place changed. no more tiny, half empty church. big old community center with a big long line. LOT of newly registered voters not on the register doing provisional ballots. 5 people ahead of me in line, all of them provisional ballots. maybe that's normal in bigger places.
druuuuuuuuuunk lady next to us voting for the first time, talking to herself & the room quite loudly, was pretty funny. 'What the...How the fuck do you...Oh god I don't even...Oh jeeeezzzzus christ I don't fucking know...' The best was when she had to fill out her info on the provisional form. She says to me, 'Hey what's the date today?" "The sixth." Writes for a moment. "What month is it?" "November." Writes again. Quiet for a moment. "So, what year is it?" "2012"
Bless her heart for coming out to vote instead of sleeping it off, is all I can say, lol.
