What's the difference between Italian and American Vermicelli?

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Thursday, 11 October 2012 07:55 (twelve years ago)

italian is thicker than spaghetti, american is thinner than spaghetti

manicotti is a noodle?

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Thursday, 11 October 2012 08:02 (twelve years ago)

i tried to get a decent amount of asian noodles but wouldn't have had room for all the egg and rice noodles

if i did i would def vote for those wide fat noodles used in pad se ew. biang biang might be the closest tho i've never had it.

I have done bad. I love my pj's. (zachlyon), Thursday, 11 October 2012 08:07 (twelve years ago)

This poll is no fun without ho fun.

Always try to avoid setting up future opportunities for kicking yourself (ledge), Thursday, 11 October 2012 08:08 (twelve years ago)

xp manicotti is both the noodle and the stuffed dish, figured if i used lasagne noodles that would work too (i sometimes use lasagne noodles in regular pasta dishes so maybe some weird person does that w/manicotti noodles)

but didn't include tort/ravioli/etc cause those noodles don't really exist without the filling

I have done bad. I love my pj's. (zachlyon), Thursday, 11 October 2012 08:10 (twelve years ago)

No Vague no credibility.

pandemic, Thursday, 11 October 2012 08:49 (twelve years ago)

it's a hand-rolled, fatter spaghetti essentially. there's probably another regional variation out there with a different name, who knows

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Thursday, 11 October 2012 08:50 (twelve years ago)

http://notjustanotherdolcevita.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/pici-al-cinghiale.jpg

i didn't notice until just now how much it looks like worms. tastes pretty good with some wild boar ragu on there tho

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Thursday, 11 October 2012 08:57 (twelve years ago)

strozapretti is also rly more of a dish than a type of pasta, it means "choke the priest" in regional slang and refers to making a heavy pasta dish out of spite when the local priest would pop round to visit and insist on being fed. So I've read a few times.

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Thursday, 11 October 2012 09:17 (twelve years ago)

Or "as well as" I should prob say, on reading the wiki entry. I do love those italian origin stories though!

For me, I think one I like is risi/risoni, the little rice-shaped pastas you can put into soup to bulk it up. A blessing when you're tryin to stretch a soup for days cause you're broke.

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Thursday, 11 October 2012 09:20 (twelve years ago)

also arent soba and yakisoba the same thing? Ones the noodle, ones the dish made from it?

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Thursday, 11 October 2012 09:21 (twelve years ago)

No, it's for sure the pasta itself -- the version I have heard is that the form of the noodle itself that causes clerical strangulation, it being a kind of winged macaroni. And it's my favorite noodle to stand up to heavy or very complex-tasting sauces.

This is, by the way, a terrific book. Got it as a gag gift, but it's very useful for spontaneous guest stuff and "tonight I eat alone, but not in self-loathing".

Haha I add many things to my instant ramen all the time :D Usually boiled egg or tofu, green veg, miso paste and garlic.

SO many cheap azn food places here sell "yakisoba" and its made with gluggy udon noodles and makes me cross. Soba noodles are thin buckwheat noodles dammit!

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Thursday, 11 October 2012 09:49 (twelve years ago)

you prob should have just narrowed the focus to western noodles instead of going for asian tokenism

乒乓, Thursday, 11 October 2012 12:16 (twelve years ago)

Pasta is not noodles therefore I refuse to vote in this dumb poll.

kinder, Thursday, 11 October 2012 12:23 (twelve years ago)

the lack of e.g. rice vermicelli, glass noodles, cellophane noodles, banh pho, somen, nangmyeon, ramyeon, etc, etc, etc kind of makes this not a poll about noodles at all? you've got like like 20 options made from durum wheat, three options that are japanese (two of which are the same thing just cooked differently).

even if you were just doing euro noodles you should at least have spätzle.

best small pasta shape: orecchiette
best long pasta: I like the extremes when it comes to long pasta - either angel hair or pappardelle

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 11 October 2012 13:28 (twelve years ago)

rotini is my default these days

ciderpress, Thursday, 11 October 2012 13:28 (twelve years ago)

Of course sometimes dishes call for a specific pasta which is a different thing entirely. Generally speaking though the ones I listed are my favorites. Pasta is the best thing.

I wz gonna comment on the odd americanism of calling pasta "noodles" but I thought better of it. Oh well.

I quite like using farfalle in pasta salads, the bowtie shape lends well to holding onto globs of vinegrette dressing and shredded bits of antipasto and spinach.
