cheering up strategies

what kind of things do you do to cheer yourself up if you start feeling cross or uninspired? Do you do wholesome, comforting activities or frivolous and silly things? New socks tend to cheer me up, as do libraries and mushroom soup, so my cheering up strategies seem very wholesome.

rainy, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The library's the place, there's no doubt about it. Even just the first smell of the library is enough. I honestly thought I would be rich enough to buy and live in a library when I was pre-10.

maryann, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I drink. This is very bad.

Ally, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maybe you could drink out of cumbersome and novel drinking vessels like hollowed out pineapples?

rainy, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Walking up a steep hill is the most wholesome thing I think I 've ever done..the energy required usually dispells the prior -ve....altho sadly drinking often seems easier if you've got the cash something a bit harder....

eliza, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Canoeing . God i love the water and the rythym of your blade in the water. I liek seeign gulls and terns , magpies, sparrows, crows , starlings ... !!!

anthony, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cumbersome and novel drinking vessels should definitely be my next step. I could totally do that at Caprice, "Justin, I want to drink out of a pineapple shell, can you go get one from downstairs and hollow it out?" I think he'd do it, I mean, Steph randomly decided she wanted something made out of mango the other night and he went and got her a mango and then made her something, he does what we ask without even asking questions. "Yes, we want Long Islands with no ice or coke". This is how we invent such fantastic drinks as the Cherry Stem, we just tell him to change around our Long Islands with different, more potent ingredients and he does it, with a disapproving look but no questions.

Ally, Sunday, 12 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeff sounds like a bartender from heaven .

anthony, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Appropriately enough it is National Mango Week.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't try to cheer myself up, I'd rather feel cross.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom i need to celebrate that .

anthony, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am waiting for National Wanko Day. Err, no, I think Britain already celebrated that.

nathalie, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where d'you go to find out what week it is? And how do they pare it down to just 52 things? And who pares?

mark s, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They don't pare. Any week is many weeks in one. There is no central special day or week register. These days and weeks have no official status. They're just a hoary old PR tactic to give the media something to hang a story on. You can unilaterally declare this week 'Mark Sinker Awareness Week' if you like.

Nick, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't the Continuity Doomins already do that?

mark s, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why is there even a such thing as National Mango Week? I declare this National Hair Dye Week.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chocolate, walking, Iggy Pop music, bitching on livejournal.

Lyra, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Revive! Any new suggestions? They are needed.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots and lots of caffeine seems to be doing the trick, at least for the past week.

hstencil, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I just read too much. I used to drink too much. Reading seems a better idea health-wise, plus I'm getting OLD, so...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole - go and rent any of the films mentioned on the 'Happiness' thread.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder how well Oblique Strategies would work in this instance?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmmm, when the world really really gets to me, I drink tea and have some toast and watch Return of the Jedi.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole: "Discover the recipes you are using and abandon them."

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

(Warning: This may result in a U2 record.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Brisk walk, listen to the Posies, drive out in the country (which can go the other way quite easily), look for Chris V. posts (fucker cracks me up fairly consistently).

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Make up snappy comebacks in your head whenever your boss says something condescending to you. Pretend you are in a movie and the audience can hear the hilarious narration going on in your head.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

A long walk miles from any people. Then Back to the Future I, II & III DVD box set.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Orange Juice (the band) always hits the spot for me... like right now!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Listen to this song.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Plan a party. Better yet - plan a party at someone else's house.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

and listen to that song at the party. and wear a robe at all times like your Hugh Hefner. I like how Hugh likes to dance. I wish once he would bust out a caterpillar and his toupee would fall off.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

See? Now I'm cheered up.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

or listen to the philistines jr: http://www.tarquinrecords.com/pjr/videos_mp3s.html

The Cable Guy is a really great song! Buy all their albums! They rule!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Does he really have sex with all those girls?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Listen to Ladyflash by The GO! team, it can't fail to cheer anyone up. It certainly works for me.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris: Fuck yeah!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Bask in the reflected glow of your own generosity (eg "'Must-see TV' now enforced by law").

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Does he really have sex with all those girls?

You guys must not have seen AutoFocus yet, because if you had you would have learned that too much sex makes you evil.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

drink a cup of tea. listen to a record you like.

it works for a while.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Drink water. Feel at one with nature. (This may or may not mean take your clothes off.)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

eat pudding. or better yet wrestle someone in it. (this can be done with clothing off.)

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Homemade vanilla pudding is the BEST. I'd much rather eat it than wrestle in it, though I suppose that would depend on my wrestling opponent.

How much is too much sex?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Good music, good books, good food, the usual -- everyone has their own recipe. But in lieu of that for the moment, *good thoughts for Nicole*.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How much is too much sex?
Hmmm... THey didn't mention any figures in the movie. And when we tried to watch the documentary we got grossed out by a real photo of the murder so we turned it off. But in the movie he has sex with LOTS of different women. Every day it seems. "A day without sex is a day wasted." So I think they are at least suggesting that too much sex with too many different partners makes one evil.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

''*good thoughts for Nicole*''

yes, seconded!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Chococat loves you, Nicole.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I like to eat ice cream straight out of the carton with a big, over-sized spoon (not a normal sized one, man) while watching a sappy movie in sweat pants, a box of kleenex nearby that I can grab tissues from by the fistful.

I actually haven't done this, and it doesn't sound like cheeriness.

In actuality, when I am feeling really blue, I put on a great album that makes me want to dance, and I clean. Even doing the dishes puts me in a better mood sometimes.

Mandee, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Do the dishes in a robe! with nothing on underneath, it feels good when a breeze blows up your robe and gently caresses your undercarriage.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Breeze

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of mine include: buying music and books (except when broke), watching the Simpsons (as long as you have access to episodes you've seen less than five times), playing late '50s Louis Prima and my favourite pop music (T. Rex, Monkees, Shangri-Las, Daphne & Celeste), looking at Paul Klee paintings, reading favourite old comics (Calvin & Hobbes is very good for this, as is prime-period Peanuts, Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge, '60s Kirby/Lee, etc.) or jolly books such as P.G. Wodehouse.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Do the dishes in a robe! with nothing on underneath, it feels good when a breeze blows up your robe and gently caresses your undercarriage.

Don't you do everything in a robe?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris has Western Civilization's happiest undercarriage.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Write "FUCK WAFFLES!!" on a scrap of paper. With the gravest facial expression possible, hand the paper to a friend/relative/coworker and say to them "I received a message from the National Pancake Institute today..."

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Not entirely apt, as it's not any kind of strategy, but I am cheered up at present. I've talked about using dating sites before, and I've tried almost completely in vain to find anyone here interested in Japanese arts, and you'll know my comics background and how much of a football fan I am. The latest person I'm in touch with through this, this week, who I really liked the sound and look of, turns out to be seriously interested in Japanese (and other oriental) arts, and has recently read 'Palestine' by Joe Saccho, and really wants to know more about comics, and she's a football fan. I hadn't been holding out for a woman with these interests, but you can imagine how pleased I am to have come across one. But she won't find the likes of you attractive, you're probably thinking (okay, I might be projecting here): in fact she wrote to me first (and even on dating sites, it's still normally the men who do the approaching), partly based on really liking the look of me! We spent two hours on the phone yesterday, and when we hung up there were loads of things that I was disappointed we hadn't got on to. It might come to nothing, but I'm quite excited, and feeling cheery because of this.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

(Is 'Palestine' good Martin? I've picked it up a few times, intrigued.)

I'm really glad to hear you're happy too.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

that's great to hear, Martin! :)
