It's not challops to admit that she won four Oscars for her four at best most mediocre and at worst most mannered performances, no?

It's too easy just to vote for the most recent one I've seen, but I just watched Summertime a couple of weeks ago and was bowled over by her performance, so maybe that one.

My picks:

Alice Adams
Long Day's Journey
Summertime
The Philadelphia Story

Probably The Philadelphia Story or Woman of the Year, but it's been a while since I saw either. She's pretty great in Long Day's Journey.

Why wasn't she nominated for Bringing Up Baby? The academy has always been weak.

or Holiday?

Never mind, that clip has been pulled. Holiday is so good, though.

The lack of Bringing Up Baby here makes it easy for me to just go ahead and vote for Summertime, which I would have wanted to do anyway.

Holiday is her best performance. Maybe Grant's too.

i know meryl's oscar nods placed against kate's is a bit skewed cuz kate's are all (or nearly all i forget) for lead while meryl has alot of supporting turns in there but boy meryl has to have nearly lapped her by now right? i can remember she was around kate's record circa adaptation and that was ten years ago.

balls, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

and Streep has at least 16 more left in her.

The next film nerd question: which is the best of her Oscar-winning performances?

I say The Lion in Winter, no contest. Anyone who votes OGP gets a dead loon thrown in his face.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

I'd have to go with the first one, less mannered.

cancer, kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago)

whoa - Morning Glory less mannered? I can understand why she became box office poison. I'll grant that no weirder sound performance existed in the early thirties.

you haven't heard Gracie Fields?

thread lock holiday (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:58 (thirteen years ago)

well she's mannered in that the character is, in her bones, in MG. TLiW is just wacky Old Kate mannerisms, and the dialogue is so high-class soap-opr'y I find it more irritating between the laughs.

cancer, kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

(same w/ Alice Adams, in which she's also terrific, prob better)

Went stiff and mannered: Suddenly Last Summer.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

The character in Alice Adams had a basis for her strangeness; it's a contrast against the lower middle class gentility of her home and of Fred MacMurray.

whadya expect, every PBS station shows TPS every month, doesn't it?

crazy uncle in the attic (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

TCM has it in frequent-for-them rotation, plus TVO here in Ontario shows it semi-frequently on their Saturday Night at the Movies program. It is one of the movies I've seen the most number of times in fragments via catching it on TV (it and Die Hard With a Vengeance), so yeah (properly viewed it twice, mind).

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

I could have sworn I voted for Summertime!
