He's Making Me Look Bad . . . . (Post Otter Pics Now)

I'm in a damn sticky situation.

This is my first proper production job and the artist in question has gone AWOL. Basically, he's taken his advance and run off to another country on the proceeds for a "short holiday". He made some mention that he'd told the label he was back before he actually was, but I didn't expect this.

He isn't returning emails and now I'm getting irate messages from his label asking where he is. I get the impression from the tone of them that, because I'm an old friend of his, I'm covering for him in some way. It's making me look bad and probably blowing any chance of further work with them. I feel really let down and, well, used. I need his input to okay final mixes and things and as a result my hands are frustratingly tied.

From the word go he seemed a bit hostile towards the label (he had another offer from people far more on his wavelength, but the one he went with offered a decent sum of money - hence the holiday) but I really didn't expect him to be so damn difficult.

Anyone out there with similar experiences? How can I convince the label (who didn't know me from Adam until a month ago and have met me briefly twice) that I'm not colluding in some sort of smash and grab raid on their funds? I really need this work, I'm not getting any younger and opportunities are thin on the ground for someone who isn't near a city and knows absolutely nobody connected to any part of the "biz".

And whats more I feel that a good friend has betrayed me and is using me to deflect all the flack whilst he runs and hides. I don't think he realises that they might well sack him off and ask for their money back, and I know damn well he won't be able to pay it back to them if it comes to that.

Ugh. I'm not exactly sure what I'm asking for here. I know, pictures of otters. Please post pictures of otters to the rest of this thread. I like otters.

My roommate is an otter trainer--these are her charges, Buck and Emma:

I used to work at the gift shop directly across from their exhibit. Buck masturbates furiously all day with a floating plastic tube while Emma cowers in a corner.

*sloths can't be bothered, fall asleep. otters butcher them. The end*

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I was imagining the otters swimming around in the river yelling "Oh, YEAH? Why don't you come down HERE and say that to my FACE!" and the sloth responding by staying in the tree, chopping branches off and dropping them -- point first -- into the heads of the otters below.
Gravity is a great weapon, I remember some sci-fi writer saying once.

Hey. Was this the same buddy who you were crowing about 'getting signed' and not 'signing on'?

this (minus the Otters) reminds me of the song "Starry Eyes" by the Records:

While you were off in France, we were stranded in the British Isles.
Left to fall apart amongst your passports and your files.
We never asked for miracles, but they were our concern.
Did you really think we'd sit it out and wait for your return?

I don't want to argue. I ain't gonna budge.
Won't you take this number down before you call up the judge?
I don't want to argue. There's nothing to say.
Get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way!

While you were on the beach, were you dreaming all about your share?
Planning to invest it all to cover wear and tear?
We paid for all the phone calls. The money's off the shelf.
Don't you know that while you're gone away, I've got to help myself?

I don't want to argue. I ain't gonna budge.
Won't you take this number down before you call up the judge?
I don't want to argue. There's nothing to say.
Get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way!

While you were in the pool, we were meeting with the boys upstairs,
Talking to the money men, and carrying out affairs.
We had no time for cocktails, or working up a tan.
The boys have all been spoken to. The writ has hit the fan.

I don't want to argue. I ain't gonna budge.
Won't you take this number down before you call up the judge?
I don't want to argue. There's nothing to say.
Get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way

He's back but I've not spoken to him yet - his A+R guy emailed me today. Phew! I was thinking he had run off to become a monk or something.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually his label asked me to tie him up and beat him with sticks a while ago so maybe it's a good idea.

Latest developments - Artist comes round drunk and thoroughly miserable and demand the tracks be made darker and harsher. Label hears said mixes and now wants release schedules put back a stupidly long length of time and are being very shirty.

I've sent them a "clear the air" email (I don't think that the dirty mixes should be used, they're very inappropriate for most of the tracks and were really done to appease a friend who was drunk and morose) and I'm waiting with baited breath for their reply.

My starsign is Libra. The scales.
