WASHINGTON (AP) — An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling "Frankenstorm" is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.

Government forecasters on Thursday upped the odds of a major weather mess, now saying there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday.

Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damage.

May or may not be as bad as predicted, but I wanted to start a thread titled "FRANKENSTORM 2012".

The job repercussions for a forecaster who warns of a possible weather catastrophe that turns out to be nbd are miniscule compared to one who predicts bland weather and it turns out an epic catastrophe.

Aimless, Thursday, 25 October 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

yes, but we consumers should proceed with jaundice.

crazy uncle in the attic (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 October 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

Nothing to worry about, imo, unless they actually mean Frankenstorm's monster.

Gary Mayonnaise (Old Lunch), Thursday, 25 October 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

Weather Channel people fairly confident this thing will match the hype.

Much prefer anticipating this to another week discussing elections!

i honestly thought this thread was going to be about some scandal involving Al Franken. especially because the most recent post was by Morbius.

would definitely vote for "-storm" being the new "-gate"

i would rather an incoming storm be over-hyped than under-reported to be honest

are on-air meteorologists held accountable like that? i don't even know. but for public safety officials, yes, this is very true. one such official in RI was fired for lack of preparation for a snowstorm a few years ago -- the storm resulted in schoolbuses full of kids stranded in city traffic for 10 hours and general chaos.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Friday, 26 October 2012 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

reminds me of the time our high-school hosted a stage hypnotist. who took one girl from the audience and gave her the suggestion that there was a huge snowstorm coming, and that she had to instruct the audience what to do. she became visibly upset and started telling everyone to go to the store and stock up on bread and milk and go home. everyone was laughing hysterically at her and she became frantic, convinced of the terrifying reality of the snowstorm. even when the hypnotist brought her out of it she was still upset. fucked up.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Friday, 26 October 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

stocking up on bread and milk is a crucial element of storm preparedness in rhode island, fwiw. i expect the most of the stores in the area to be sold out of whole milk by sunday.

also I was not happy about the subway service being down last time, I was happy about the roads not getting plowed, cars stuck in the middle of the road. it was a winter wonderland.

iatee, Friday, 26 October 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

scheduled to fly to Chicago from Baltimore early Sunday afternoon and supposed to fly back Tuesday night. dreading the potential clusterfuck this could lead to.

circa1916, Friday, 26 October 2012 14:36 (thirteen years ago)

xp do these ppl have their own hens? cause if they have eggs they could make french toast. it is also nice to have syrup and nutmeg imo. the nice thing about hens is that if thepower goes out for a week, you can just keep getting fresh eggs. i guess it would then help to have a milking cow, too.

Bad news: Said job requires me to drive up to Baltimore.

I've got 3 bottles of wine and a vat of chile, but I need to spend the weekend Halloween-costume shopping.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 26 October 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Went to the hardware store and grocery because we needed some non-storm related stuff and knew it would only get crazier there as Sunday approaches; battery and water aisles decimated.

quincie, Friday, 26 October 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

D.C., famous for hardy storm-weathering!

VP are you going to jump in the vat of chile?

crazy uncle in the attic (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 October 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

I mean batteries I get, OK you need to power your flashlight but I don't understand the water thing? I've lived here through a ton of power outages (last one was 6 days) but there's never been a boil water order or anything like that. I mean clearly stocking up on booze is more important than stocking up on bottled water; booze does not come out of the faucet duh.

quincie, Friday, 26 October 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

Water can get super bad. Also, people who have wells may not have access to water at all if the power goes out.

quincie, Friday, 26 October 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

I mean I am no sanitation expert, just sayin' that I have yet to hear this happen except for the lollead problems of the 1990s.

quincie, Friday, 26 October 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

If sewer water mixes with primary water (which almost always happens in flooding situations), you don't want to be drinking what comes from your tap (and you don't want to go outside and walk around in it, either).

Bout to go Jethro TULL on that ass (Johnny Fever), Friday, 26 October 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

Oh,that's right. you're talking about cityfolk. I don't know think you guys are going to have any problems with that. I'm probably screwed. My power's stayed on for the last few hurricanes, the derecho, and all of snowmageddon. My number's up.

Ohhhh OK I had not thought about flooding; I was thinging "so the power goes out, nbd for h20 tx amirite I mean they must have generators and stuff."

HL having the power out in ~60 degree weather is not so miserable, but when it was out for 6 days with temps upwards of 100, SUCKTASTIC

yeah, from the accounts of survivors things went from stormy to life-threatening in a matter of minutes. I mean if my house started filling with water I'd be tempted to run downstairs and grab my guitar or some master tapes. ppl think this'll only take 30 seconds, then the lights go out and the water rushes in and the floating furniture becomes an obstacle course and panic sets in and it's game over.

Village Voice cover story says "Sandy is New York's Katrina." *this* close to posting it to the rolling is this racist thread.

s.clover, Saturday, 24 November 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

even worse, the title is taken from a quote from someone in really dire circumstances in the red hook projects, where it's an understandable sentiment, and the "our" in "our katrina" is meant to be that neighborhood, those buildings, those people. but then that idea is unilaterally applied across a whole city most of which didn't undergo anything like katrina.

there's a chris rock routine in this.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 24 November 2012 03:48 (thirteen years ago)

morbs, yeah on some level there's some trickiness w/r/t the quote and how it's used. but there's no getting around the problem with the headline itself, which just smacked me in the face when i saw it in a newsstand. the article itself, after a rocky start, is actually fairly interesting. i wouldn't be shocked if the editors didn't try to sensationalize an initially much more level-headed piece of journalism.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, making a case for tens of billions of dollars in federal aid, declared on Monday that Hurricane Sandy had been “more impactful” than Hurricane Katrina, the deadly storm that struck the Gulf Coast in 2005.

Hurricane Sandy, which arrived in New Jersey and New York on Oct. 29, “affected many, many more people and places than Katrina,” Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, told reporters at a news briefing. He said the comparison between the two hurricanes “puts this entire conversation, I believe, in focus.”

...Mr. Cuomo acknowledged that more people had been killed by Hurricane Katrina, but said that Hurricane Sandy had had a greater economic impact because of the dense population in the New York City area. He said Hurricane Sandy had destroyed or damaged more units of housing, affected more businesses and caused more customers to lose power.
