three months pass...

Dave had lifted the plastic top off a trash receptacle and was rooting around. I expected someone to come out of the business and tell him to leave, threatening to call the cops. After a bit, he put the lid back on the trash can and returned, a beat-up Styrofoam cup in his hand, one of the microwave-ramen-noodle varieties. The three of us walked back to the car in awkward silence, my friend and I wondering what just happened. “Spit cup,” Dave said. “You mind if I dip in your car?”

Also, DFW has his own profile on RateMyProfessors.com in which students remember him as "one of the best teachers I've ever had," "tough as shit and can hurt students' feelings," and "very neurotic and tends to chew tobacco and spit in a cup while lecturing."

I liked cigarettes, very much, but one thing I did not like was how hard they were on the lungs and wind in terms of sports, stair-climbing, coitus, etc. Some roofer friends back home got me started on chew as a cigarette-substitute at I think age twenty eight. Chew doesn’t hurt your lungs (obviously), but it also has massive, massive amounts of nicotine, at least compared to Marlboro Lights. (This, too, is all very condensed and boiled down; sorry if it’s terse.) I have tried probably ten serious times to quit chewing tobacco in the last decade. I’ve never even made it a year. Besides all the well-documented psychic fallout, the hardest thing about quitting for me is that it makes me stupid. Really stupid. As in walking into rooms and forgetting why I’m there, drifting off in the middle of sentences, feeling coolness on my chin and discovering I’ve been drooling. Without chew, I have the attention span of a toddler. I giggle and sob inappropriately. And everything seems very, very far away. In essence it’s like being unpleasantly stoned all the time… and as far as I can tell it’s not a temporary withdrawal thing. I quit for eleven months once, and it was like that the whole time. On the other hand, chewing tobacco kills you—or at the very least it makes your teeth hurt and turn unpleasant colors and eventually fall out. Plus it’s disgusting, and stupid, and a vector of self-contempt.

Decades of epidemiologic research bear out Rodu's findings. While no tobacco product is completely safe, smokeless products have been shown to be 98 percent safer than cigarettes. In the United Kingdom, the Royal College of Physicians reported in 2002 that smokeless tobacco is up to 1,000 times less hazardous than smoking, and in 2007, further urged world governments to seriously consider instituting tobacco harm reduction strategies as a means to save lives.

To see the proof of what tobacco harm reduction can do, look to Sweden, Rodu said. "Over the past 50 years, Swedish men have had Europe's highest per capita consumption of smokeless tobacco as well as Europe's lowest cigarette use. During the same time, they also have the lowest rate of lung cancer than men in any other European country."

...

"The risk of mouth cancer among smokeless tobacco users is extremely low -- certainly lower than the risk of smoking-related diseases among smokers," he said. "The annual mortality rate among long-term dry snuff users is 12 deaths per 100,000 and the rate among users of more popular snus, moist snuff and chewing tobacco is much lower.

I tried snuff with a couple at a bar once because I guy we with had it and we were curious. A couple weeks later the bouncer pulled me aside at a party and told me that if I was going to do coke that was my business but he'd rather I not do it at a window table in his establishment. It wasn't coke! It was snuff! Didn't really sound all that convincing but it was true dammit.

You know the feeling: You're in minute two of the huge 200-person lecture and you don't give a shit about botany. How on earth can you make it better? Packing a monster gagger. Break out a wide-mouthed Vitamin Water bottle or OJ carton (person favorite) and start juicing. Sure, some babes won't like it, but the ones who don't mind it are gems. Recently, a 919 told me that she liked Bros doing it "because it shows they don't give a f*ck." Yes, she's a keeper. Let's all throw it back to when men were men, packed a Stonewall Jackson–sized lippers, and were PAID in straight cash to do it.

one month passes...

But when I masturbate I have been buying a can of chewing tobacco ... and have been using it as a lubricant. When I rub it on it gives me a nice burn and makes me feel a nice cool lightheaded feeling. It is basically the best masturbation experience I have had (a friend who chews on the baseball team advised me to try this). But I am wondering if it can cause problems in the male reproductive organs? Is this a common thing guys do?

anyone tried the NEW copenhagen SOUHERN BLEND long cut?

dylannn, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 00:33 (twelve years ago)

it's still got the boreal forest decomposition stink and dusty barn floor accent of copenhagen long natty but definitely sweeter. the first thing you'll notice, if you dip cope straight or snuff, is the lack of salt. there's a sweetness--nothing like skoal straight, though-- that's closer to, maybe, red man, a dried fruit character but nothing like the rum raisin taste of chew. and something like powdered iced tea, a powdered peach flavor, but nothing like the artificial candy of kayak peach. and a citrus note, standing on the other side of a room smelling fork tines scraped across a lemon, bergamot.

if you brush your teeth 2x a day is this gonna leave you relatively unscathed?

have taken snuff before. smelt nice but didn't notice anything other than that

imago, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 08:30 (twelve years ago)

i mean it all depends on what you dip and how often and how much and how your own individual mouth works.

it's brown stuff with sugar and salt in it and it sits in your mouth for 20 minutes to several hours. if you want a nicotine delivery system that won't brown your teeth, has no sugar, has very very few health risks associated with it, snus portions are the way to go.

dudes i know that roll with a dip in the morning, pack fills until lunchtime, spit it out, start over again after lunch, pack fills until dinnertime, spit it out, start over again, pack fills until bedtime.... some of them have fucked up teeth but they're the least likely to put work in on their oral hygiene.

dylannn, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 22:54 (twelve years ago)

i've been chewing levi garrett and red man over the last few weeks and compared to dip, it's a very different story: it has a lot of sugar + friction on teeth and gums from mastication + generates flashfloods of black tar spit. it makes me feel like a man and it tastes good but i feel like it's probably a good way to turn my mouth brown and cause my teeth to fall out.

I quit smoking (though not nicotine) 4 years ago via Swedish snus. It worked where patches, gum, lozenges, and electronic cigarettes didn't, and I'm not about to start spitting at my age.

I've tried around 30 varieties, and many are foul, though none are worse than the saccharine American Camel snus. The one I've gravitated to is General long portions. When I tire of the tobacco+bergamot+salt+pepper flavor of the leading brand, I do elderflower with Jakobsson's Fläder. Kinda tempted by the cinnamon varieties that came on the market in the past year: I loved cinnamon oil toothpicks back in the day, and have used cinnamon toothpaste for decades.

Sanpaku, Saturday, 27 July 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

the world of swedish snus is amazing, when american dip is produced mostly by a handful of giant multinationals and in flavors that are mostly gummi candy-ish.

the only snus readily available here is general, portions and loose.

dylannn, Monday, 29 July 2013 02:05 (twelve years ago)

i've only ever encountered one good smokeless product bearing the camel brandname and it was the wide cut wintergreen dip, which has been eliminated from the market.

dylannn, Monday, 29 July 2013 02:07 (twelve years ago)

someone left some of those camel sticks, orbs and dissolving strips in the office. kind of want to try one of them out, but i don't smoke (or dip) and suspect the nic dose will make me ill?

|citation needed| (will), Monday, 29 July 2013 02:42 (twelve years ago)

i was smoking the first time i tried a skoal, and i still found it super strong. i left it in my gum for like 2 minutes and was lit woozy for like an hour.

een, Monday, 29 July 2013 02:51 (twelve years ago)

i think people that smoke a ton even feel a good buzzz off a first dip.

even if it's the same nicotine in both things, it's just different, if you actually try to use it as a replacement for the nicotine from cigarettes, even if you get a nicotine rush from it, it's not quite satisfying at first-- it's different.

dylannn, Monday, 29 July 2013 05:24 (twelve years ago)

i'm just finishing off my last tin of copenhagen southern blend and then
--only because i'm going to a continent without moist snuff--
i'm going to give it up.

dylannn, Monday, 29 July 2013 05:26 (twelve years ago)

will: if you're not a nicotine addict, don't start.

The people that need nicotine as an anxiolytic have already found it. Consider yourself lucky to have had no need.

When tobacco is held against the gums (as in snus) in non-users it initially causes a bit of local irritation and a slight burning sensation. This goes away within a week (perhaps the epithelium grows thicker).

Sanpaku, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)

I don't know if this is the right thread for this, but I've been spotting lots of people using portable vaporizers lately. Are the smoking tobacco or weed?

Moodles, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

more than likely just tobacco though i know at least one person who uses it to vaporize hash on-the-go

diamonddave85, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

Original copenhagen is my go- to brand, i love that stuff. Back in HS and college we used to dip Kodiak. I dont know if they still make that, but goddamn did it pack a punch

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 21:24 (twelve years ago)

i've dipped kodiak wintergreen. super wet, super cheap and it was like putting a lump of dry ice in my lip.

dylannn, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)

Its pretty bad. The rumor was there were small jagged fiberglass chips mixed in with the tobacco that made small cuts in your mouth so that the tobacco juice could be more readily absorbed.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 21:46 (twelve years ago)

that's solidly in urban legend territory but i know dudes that dip a can a day and believe there's fiberglass in it and still dip a can a day. kodiak is just acidic as hell, low grade tobacco totally jacked with additives, super chemical wintergreen flavor-- harsh stuff.

dylannn, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 21:57 (twelve years ago)

I should look into Swedish snus. I can't make the switch to dipping, it's just so damn disgusting.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

i picked up a tin of loose general snus and mint portions. the straight general is pleasantly grassy and fresh cut lawn-y.

sanpaku, do you actually put the trapdoor on the bottom of snus cans to use?

You mean the little hidden compartment in some lids, so you can dispose of snus without littering?

Yeah, I use it. But I also used to field strip cig butts and pocket them til I found a waste bin. Leave no trace etc.

I've read the streets of Sweden are as littered with used snus portions as the streets elsewhere with butts.

Sanpaku, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)

i went to a college where a high percentage of students were Swedish and there were places on campus where you'd see lots of snus pouches stuck to walls

p sure i said this upthread but snus is the only way i've been able to successfully kick cigarettes for a sustained period of time. after 6-8 weeks on the snus i am usually able to go tobacco-free

i found a random convenience store near my office selling General for $2/tin recently!!

so hard to quit because you're basically on an all day nicotine trickle feed, rather than those sudden bursts spread throughout the day with cigarettes.

i broke down and bought a pack of skoal straight pouches, which look like a tropical fly's larva, fat and light brown.
