"If can believe it, this month marks MAD Magazine’s 60th year of bringing comedy, pop culture satire, and high-quality potty humor to America. To celebrate, the folks behind the insanity are releasing Totally MAD: 60 Years of Humor, Satire, Stupidity and Stupidity, full of cartoons, comedy writing and illustration from ”The Usual Gang of Idiots,” complete with a foreword by Stephen Colbert and Eric Drysdale. To commemorate the occasion, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite covers from MAD‘s long and storied history."

Also use as an opportunity to discuss the awesomeness of MAD in general.

E.T. is the best Mad cover didnt even have to look at the choices

Mr. Zone A (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

Voted Industry, since that's the era I was actively buying Mad. I remember kid me thinking that one was very clever.

Sex Kitten mind control slave (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

Hm, my personal purchase-era isn't covered (1977-82)...that was when they had to add the UPC symbol and came up with a joke description of it every time.

Faster than food (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

"Batman" cover the most recognizable and iconic, but the bird, sex, industry and composition all nail the tone.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Thursday, 1 November 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

Have to go with the bird. These days it would come with a black plastic cover around it... maybe it did then I dunno.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Thursday, 1 November 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

A weak ten. The composition book was pretty good. Seemed like it got pretty rote: something topical, with Alfred. Granted it often worked (Batman) but it got tired (ET).

B'wana Beast, Sunday, 4 November 2012 00:50 (thirteen years ago)

between industry & finger. i used to have that ET issue! makes me sad that i didnt keep my old MADs

Didn't realize they stopped doing that. Loved those UPC gags.

5-Hour Enmity (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 4 November 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

no lena, no credibility

throwing john shade (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 4 November 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

never actually bought the magazine, so my era was all '60s hand-me-downs from my dad

Like this as a movie parody one – interesting contrast w/that old Mingo warmth (I guess the finger is too?)

Also got to give kudos to the Kennedy/Nixon flip cover.

The Most Typical and Popular Girl Rider (Crabbits), Sunday, 4 November 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

The Clockwork Orange one I think flips me out bcz instead of Al's left eye being higher like normal, it is parallel but way bigger. In sum, I have looked at tiny pictures of Mad covers for way too many hours of my life.

I brought a recent MAD special that collected all their Batman stuff for one of my students to read – he had it for two months and kept reading it over and over, until I had to tape the cover back on. And this in spite of his unfamiliarity with any but the Nolan Batmans. I told him. "You're so into that Mad, I have a million of them at home, I should bring them for you." He said, "You mean there are more of these??"
