My truck (Chev S10, ext. cab, 4-cyl) is paid-for, reliable and boring as hell. I'd like to unload it and get a new car, put manual transmissions behind me forever, but it would be a dumb extravagance for as little as I drive.

1992: My first car was a 1979 Datsun 280zx. It had all kinds of problems but it looked so great. Sold it to a friend of my brother's and it caught on fire and burned to a crisp about a month later.1992: Second car was a 1986 Audi 4000S. Pretty much determined my future of never owning an Audi or VW ever again.1993: Since the Audi was such a heap, my dad helped me buy a 1987 Toyota pickup. It was nothing special.1994: Traded it for a 1987 Mazda 323 wagon. I think this is my favorite car ever. I should've never gotten rid of it, because its problems were $10 or $15 dollar fixes...1996: My 1990 Toyota Camry's problems were $500 and $1000 fixes. Camrys are probably reliable for most people, but I bought a lemon.1998: Ended up with my mom's 1988 Honda Accord. I learned to drive in this car. Before I had my own car, it's what I did much of my high school driving in. I was glad to finally get it, and I drove it until it wouldn't go anymore.2003: Bought a 2001 Dodge Neon. It was the "newest" car I'd ever owned, and it was also the one that I owned for the longest. It died last year on my way to Thanksgiving dinner. Timing belt broke, and it would've cost as much to fix as the car itself was worth. I wrote off the loss and bought a car from my uncle.2011: The car I bought from my uncle was a 2007 Suzuki Reno. It was a serviceable A-to-B kind of car, and it had a nice stereo with an iPod jack, but I never liked it.2012: Traded the Suzuki in for a 2006 Ford Escape. It's still so new to me that I don't have any idea what its quirks are, but it's probably the nicest thing I've ever owned. I hope I have it for as long or longer than I had the Neon.

2007 Honda CRV, and a 1990 Acura Integra.
I prefer the Acura bc it's more fun to drive but CRV is fine for commuting/shopping and long road trips. It's just a car though.
The only car i have special feelings for is my old 1969 Austin 1800 Mk II - it was my first car, belonged to my grandma before that & was in perfect condition. Drove it all through college. it RULED. Poo-brown, white leather interior, roomy as all get out and could go like the clappers.

xxpost yeah she really was a winner. And mine was in about as good condition as that one in the photo. Nan had kept it garaged except on Sundays for church when I got it.
we ended up selling it to a collector because it got to the point where I had to keep a shittier, broken down Austin in the backyard to use for parts and I didn't have the time/money to keep up with the maintenance on it.
but they have a devoted following - other Austin drivers would always wave at me whenever we passed each other on the highway, or come up and talk to me if I had her parked anywhere around town. It was kind of like being in a club.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 1 November 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago)
Wow, that Austin's a beaut.
Current wheels are 2000 Toyota Sienna; dull, but by far the most reliable car I've owned. But I still miss my first car, '87 Nissan Stanza Wagon:http://a1.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/121/cdbb566601e1101bcbb94e88674f2a67/l.jpgGoofy little car, underpowered (had 4wd, but same engine as the 2wd), first van with dual sliding doors, and the easiest car I've ever parallel parked.

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid. Boooooooooring, but that is a good thing in my book.
1997 Isuzu Trooper with 108K. Not boring at all! Manual transmission! Fun! Terrible gas milage!
― quincie, Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:00 (twelve years ago)
first car was a 94? Plymouth Horizon. really not a good car and i believe had transmission problems the entire time i owned it that were masked by the previous owner being an old lady who drove in town below 25mph always. i repainted the roof myself with anti-rust outdoor paint when it started to flake out. looked great.
then i had an 86? Toyota Camry that ran ok but had the weirdest shitty things happen to it. i hit a pothole at 60 mph that punched one of the rear shocks up into the interior of the car through the panel that holds the speakers.
then i inherited a 95 Olds Cutlass Ciera from my grandmother when she died. my dad and i drove it back to MN from phoenix (not fun btw). those things are tanks and you see tons of them on the road still. ancillary shit started to fail after a while tho, the power locks, the windshield squirters, etc. i gave it away to a vets organization.

― Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:49 (twelve years ago)
It's funny (well not funny when you think about it) that car interiors really only come in three colors anymore: tan, gray or black. When I think about the green Olds with green interior my parents had when I was a child, I gag.

my Grandma kept all the interior seats of the Austin under horrible beige seat covers - when I got the car the first thing we did was take off the covers to wash them and discovered !! white leather seats!!
used the seat covers in summer, of course. but daaaaaamn those things were cool.

I can't say I have strong feelings of affection for any car I've owned. otoh, I do have strong feelings of appreciation for our 1994 Honda Civic 4dr sedan, because the cost of ownership on it has been **beyond outstanding** and it is as reliable as a rock. This is what I ask of a car and it has delivered big time!
― Aimless, Thursday, 1 November 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago)
Our dodge is my first new truck to drive off the dealership lot. Before that I drove a used jeep grand cherokee, and my first car was Scout made by International harvester, it looked like this except completely orange http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/2539/3861/31346930001_large.jpgWith both the jeep and scout, I always drove in fear of something breaking and getting stranded, it happened all the time with my scout. And after I put 160.000 miles on my jeep in 5 years, things slowly started falling apart. Having a new vehicle makes a world of difference but I'm still getting used to not worrying when I drive.
― JacobSanders, Thursday, 1 November 2012 18:23 (twelve years ago)

I miss my first car, an old '82 Pontiac with green button-tuffed velour reclining seats. For me it's inextricably linked to my first girlfriend, (not really the first, but the first that was a real romantic relationship so let's not count anyone before). We went everywhere together in that car. Often got stuck together too 'cause it broke down alot. Had a cassette player so we could inflict our musical tastes on each other. I should've kept that car. I should've kept that girl....
have a good picture of it at home I'll post if I can find it later
― soaked (Lee626), Thursday, 1 November 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago)
Ah yeah, International Harvester - they got spooked out by rising fuel prices and stopped making pickup trucks and 4x4s in the '80s; surely by the '90s nobody would be driving SUVs anymore. Whoops.
― soaked (Lee626), Thursday, 1 November 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago)
been driving a '95 corolla for about 10 years now, it's boring though pretty reliable and paid for. but it's old now, dinged up inside and out, accelerates slowly, doesn't have a stereo (didn't bother replacing it after it was stolen for the third time), one of the headlights doesn't work on regular mode so it has to be on high beams all the time, loud road noise on the highway, etc. so we're going to buy a new (used) car in the next month, mainly because i worry about taking such an old car on the road for longer trips and we're driving to north carolina for christmas.

car #2 : hyundai pony : f*cking hated it. heavy on steering. heavy on everything. no joy to drive. so, i crashed into a truck head on, and got rid of the f*cker for ....
car #3 : fiat brava : more comfort than the panda, but dreadful visibility. but a car i really loved until it became very costly to keep on road.

This is how little I care about cars: I honestly don't know if I have a Camry or a Carolla. It's def one of those C Toyotas though.
― ENBB, Thursday, 1 November 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago)
I think it's a Camry. I inherited it from my parents when my mom stopped driving.
The only other car I've had was a silver Saturn that was a college graduation present. My dad had my initials detailed near the driver's handle. lol. LONG ISLAND! I actually really loved that car but sold it when I moved out of the country for a couple years.
― ENBB, Thursday, 1 November 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago)
That one was actually sort of funny. My parents had arranged to have a friend drive it onto our lawn while we were coming back from the graduation weekend. I was hungover as fuck and pretty much passed out in the backseat when we rolled up to the house. I remember looking at them and asking why some asshole had parked on our lawn. The damn thing even had a bow on it and it took me a good five minutes to figure out what was going on.

x-post - I was just really really hungover. Once I got some sleep and felt better I did totally love and appreciate it especially since I'd never asked for a car nor did I think getting one was even a remote possibility.

whereas my teenkid (as most teenkids of the modern age) has a very different level of expectation.

not too mention the fact i love driving it a lot more than the fusion ..

When we finished the job in del rio, we decided to tow the jeep back home which is on the other side of Texas. I surprised myself and did fairly well, until we hit Houston traffic and I thought we were going to die. No one seem to understand why I was driving slow or to understand how long it takes to switch lanes. Now we are thinking about buying a travel trailer and I'm a little nervous. Even though the guy who sold us the truck said I could pull a tree out of the ground with the truck, it still changes your driving completely. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8191/8148074272_f3e8f7d5d6_b.jpg

I have a 10-yr-old Jeep Liberty, cherry red like this one:
http://www.sookeharbour.com/classified/images/2002_jeep_liberty.jpg
I bought it from a friend a few years ago after I left NYC (and seven blissful car-free years). It gets terrible gas mileage, but was the right price for me at the time and is convenient for toting two kids around. (I guess that's why the Liberty was so popular when it came out, it was the suburban mom's alternative to a minivan.) Biggest bonus: manual transmission. I love driving stick, so much more satisfying. It's at 120,000, and I've started having to replace things semi-regularly, but it's paid off, in good shape, and my mechanics promise to get it to at least 200,000 for me. So I'm reasonably content with it.

Its pretty good. It's the second one ive had, (i had the '05) and its a significant upgrade over that model. If you live in snow territory get the CTS 4. It will have to be pre-owned because I think they are discontinuing it.

style-wise, it's as dull as dishwater (and the same basic color, as well), but it gets pretty decent gas mileage, handles well, is miraculously low-maintenance & has retained a remarkable level of marketplace value.

First car:
1975 Toyota Corona wagon. Learnt to drive and had one of these as first car. It was my nan's. Wonderful little car, big enough to fit band gear, small enough to park easily. Not even 60,000k's on the clock when I got it, unkillable 2L engine. Unfortunately my friend fucked it up driving me back from a hospital.

Currently:
1973 Chrysler by Chrysler. Had it for five or six years now. I love it, but don't drive it much. No aircon or sound system and the LPG system has stopped working. still.

1990: 1981 chevy citation, multiple shades of blue, golf ball for the shifter handle, KRACO stereo, had a lot of problems
1991: 1986 grey chevy celebrity. Rear ended someone in this and it never really worked right afterwards.
1995: 1988(?) gold plymouth horizon. This car was my sister's before she went to college, I borrowed it one day and taught myself to drive a stick. Delivered a lot of pizzas in this one, couldn't fill the tank more than half way, and had accidents that broke both rear tail lights two saturdays in a row (one my fault, one not my fault).
1995: 1986 red honda CRX. Got in an accident in Detroit (last one so far), it kept running, sold to an acquaintance and ended up finding its rusting hulk in the backyard of a friend ten years later.
1997: 1990? silver Oldsmobile Bravada, acquired upon moving in with girlfriend. Eventually sold to a girl from my hometown and its rusting hulk is visible on Google maps: http://goo.gl/maps/Pc3j9
2003?: 1995 navy blue Subaru Legacy wagon. The default car for non SUV hippie types in snowy climates. Loved it but no longer need AWD.
Late 2009: brand new silver 2010 Honda Fit Sport. Swore I'd never in million years buy a new car but this was too good a deal to pass up. I kind of dig it, from Washington to Michigan and back a couple times, can hold a ton of shit, generally adequate.

i've owned a dozen cars in my life. this was my third car. 1995 honda civic sedan. i drove it across canada twice. i drove it to california twice. went across mountain ranges. taught the love of my life to drive in it and she put hundreds of clicks on it without a license or any proper driver education. had a low mileage jdm motor put in it after it rolled over 300k km on the first motor. just over 300k km on its second motor. it sat at home in my mom's backyard while i went around the world. it took its final trip from regina to vancouver island in 2006. i left it in the yard of my aunt's house and i forgot about it and she had it towed away. i loved it and i miss it more than any childhood pets.
