An exercise in frustration?

Is it even possible for one person to successfully hang up shelving alone? I thought it would be not too difficult:

  1. attach boards to brackets
  2. hold to wall with level on top
  3. make pencil marks where holes are
  4. drill over pencil marks
  5. hammer in weird plastic wall protectors
  6. hold up shelving
  7. screw to wall
  8. repeat with next section

I can't even get the pencil marks right though, everytime I get two, they slip when I try to do the other side, I think I'm going to just give up. Shelves leaning on floor at crazy angle -> modern art scultpure. I feel like a failure here, I'm a klutz at simple carpentry.

How many ILXers does it take to put up a shelf? I wouldn't fancy trying this alone either, Lyra.

I'd offer to come round and help, but I don't even know what country you live in, so I won't!

she might if it was a tube ticket, but not if she is one of the Dunedin crowd, I suspect! I can never remember where anyone lives if they have never shown up at a London meet.

Seattle, WA, USA -> only a few thousand miles away.
I think the problem is this- me: 5'5" shelves: 3' 6"ish, so they're so long that they keep slipping when I try to hold them up. It's too bad they're too heavy to temporarily duct tape in place against the wall.

I managed it the other day, but it was hard work. And I'm a tall-ish chap. Is there nothing you can use to support them - even if you only support one end, it makes everything easy, like if you had 3 hands

I'll have extra hands monday evening. The advantage of staying good friends with exes: I emailed one to ask for help, and he's going to stop by to assist, yay.
I actually did try the holding-up-the-other-side-with-something method (using a chair with a huge pile of books on it) but it wiggled too much- I couldn't get the pencil marks up much better than with just me holding them.

I tell you ask Ron, the man makes furniture and is also on Seattle

Ron is secretly laughing at my ineptness, I'm sure.
