This is between "Heard 3100 miles away" and "month long shock/sound waves"

blew out sailors' eardrums 20 miles away too

The death toll recorded by the Dutch authorities was 36,417, although some sources put the estimate at more than 120,000. There are numerous documented reports of groups of human skeletons floating across the Indian Ocean on rafts of volcanic pumice and washing up on the east coast of Africa up to a year after the eruption. Average global temperatures fell by as much as 1.2 degrees Celsius in the year following the eruption. Weather patterns continued to be chaotic for years and temperatures did not return to normal until 1888.

Was West of Java not East as the 60s film had it wasn't it?

Krakatau were a shit-hot finnish psychedelic jazz band led by Raoul Bjorkenheim and were almost as heavy/explosive as their name might suggest.

Anti-node of negative pressure edges out appearing and disappearing fog for me, but it's a close thing

Yeah, I can't resist the anti-node.

"CAUSED FOG TO APPEAR AND DISAPPEAR INSTANTLY AT HUNDREDS OF MILES"

this is so so so trippy

Z S, Sunday, 25 August 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago)

this whole account is so amazing! the cynical 9/10ths of me wants to think that it may be a bit exaggerated, but i want to believe it so badly. can you imagine something like this happening today? it might temporarily distract us from our miserable lives

one year passes...

Apparently the blast blew out some sailors' eardrums on a ship 40 MILES AWAY (mentioned upthread as 20 miles)

yeah that nautilus piece is excellent, as usual.

xelab, Friday, 3 October 2014 07:11 (ten years ago)

At least the next time Laki goes off we won't have the additional problem of smallpox!

calzino, Saturday, 11 April 2020 09:38 (five years ago)

you say that very boldly

mark s, Saturday, 11 April 2020 09:43 (five years ago)

I think often these super-volcanoes have a habit of going pop at the worst possible time. Throughout the little ice age period there was already lots of global instability like the Ming dynasty collapsing and stuff, some reckon the last time Laki went pop the drought summer/long winter crop failure it likely caused were the main driver of the French Revolution.

I don't why I'm mentioning Laki, because I think it's one of the other Icelandic SV's which is more likely to go pop right now! I saw something yesterday but didn't click on it, but presume this is something to do with the ffs gr8 revive.

calzino, Saturday, 11 April 2020 10:50 (five years ago)

revive = krakotoa herself go pop again

mark s, Saturday, 11 April 2020 10:53 (five years ago)

Not sure there's a good time for a super-volcano tbh.

not going off before a vaccine for COVID-19 has been developed would be a plus.
