FB post from an indie-media guy:

Wow. Just voted in Hoboken and it was an astounding exercise in geriatric-led chaos. Nobody had any idea which line to stand in, there was no direction or organization whatsoever. After a 45 minute line, they couldn't find me in the voter rolls, so they gave me a provisional paper ballot. I panhandled for a pen to fill it out, then had to almost cause a scene in order to find somebody to submit my ballot to. And this is what it's like in the heart of Obama country. It's gonna be a long night.

I have a question as an outsider - bearing in mind obviously 95% of everything I've heard has been about the presidential election, but it seems like most of the rest of what I've heard has been for the Senate, which looks like it will stay Democrat.

In particular it seems like the majority of the "Republican candidate says something phenomenally ugly, Dem candidate starts to gain ground" has been for the Senate - is there something about the Senate races in general, or is it just that it's more in play so the races are more vicious?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

not sure if anyone linked this Liptak NY Times piece about the boom in presidential "spectator states" ... up to 40+ now. In '76 most of the huge states were in the swing column (true, it was one of the closest elections of the century).

andrew senate races are local enough that some crazy not-so-vetted mofos can end up w/ the nomination but national enough that they make the news. when stuff like this happens in a house race it has to be proportionally more interesting to reach the national news.

lolling so hard @ this comment on Rev's redstate link

Yet more evidence that we have been living in fantasyland for too long now. I don't want to hear that this is all Romney's fault, or all the campaign's fault. The simple fact is that in the run-up to this election, we were fed a steady diet of lies, from all our "loyal" sources. We need to hold not only the Romney campaign accountable, but also the conservative press (specifically the Murdoch press - Fox was the worst of the bunch), and the establishment talking heads like Karl Rove and Peggy Noonan. We need to get clear about something: these people are selling us a product. They have been taking our money and telling us bedtime stories. We complain about the MSM, but can we honestly say that the conservative press has been more honest?

How do we expect to win elections if we can't even get straight facts about the electorate? But maybe it's our own fault. There was practically a revolt around here when Erik said he didn't think the polls were false. And yet he was right, and they were right. Have we become allergic to the truth?

Still S.M.D.H. ft. (will), Sunday, 11 November 2012 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think i've ever seen a comment on a rightwing blog that is so clearheaded. sadly, it makes me think that it might have been written by a non-wingnut mole trying to introduce some sanity from within the cuckoo house

Z S, Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that's pretty classic concern trolling

all mods con (k3vin k.), Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:29 (thirteen years ago)

I've seen similar instances these past few days, though, and RS itself was always pretty skeptical of Romney; certainly Erickson wasn't flying his flag as much as the GOP's in general. So maybe a half chance at trolling.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

pretty much what frum and scarborough were discussing yesterday, as mentioned on the other thread. "Republicans have been fleeced and exploited and lied to by a conservative entertainment complex"

reminds me of romney to gingrich & sanatorum during the republican debates, saying he didn't expect among republicans to have to apologize for being a capitalist.

it'll pass.

zvookster, Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:44 (thirteen years ago)

very likely some grade A concern trolling. but hey if they want to circle the wagons and start firing inward, ok by me.

Still S.M.D.H. ft. (will), Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

it's not entirely irrational for the conservative media to suggest that a race is closer than it is - if people think it's a lost cause then it becomes *really* a lost cause. (but it is worth highlighting that fox news operates off different incentives than the gop.) 'a lot of republican foot troops genuinely thought they were gonna win' is not necessarily a bad thing. but when the decision makers get their news from fox news, it can have actual consequences.

iatee, Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:48 (thirteen years ago)

I think the real thing here -- and it's either been talked about more here or on the Corner thread or both -- is the realization in some that a huge swathe of people really DO believe in certain things that aren't conservative ideals. You get all sorts of causes advanced -- academia, liberal media etc. -- but it's the "My god, they really do stand by that, and they're ignoring us...holy crap!" that's been instructive.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:50 (thirteen years ago)

http://www.redstate.com/2012/11/09/to-our-friends-at-the-national-review-ii/

During the Bush years, you went from being a conservative flagship to being a Republican one. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s a free country (for at least another twenty-six months), but it might not hurt to be up-front with your readers, you know?

Redstate thinks Dems are gonna take back the House.

Mordy, Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:51 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, to your first point, there's plenty of data that show that a pretty strong predictor of who people will vote for is who they think will win - therefore even if their guy is behind it behooves fox news types to pretend like the race is still competitive or that their guy is even ahead to keep enthusiasm up.

is there any evidence that "internal polls" - on either side - are worth anything or provide anything that nate silver doesn't have access to? in the NBA for example, teams keep all kinds of statistics - numbers of deflections on defense, how players fare in very specific situations - that either don't exist in the public sphere or that 95% of fans and most writers don't have access to (or even know about). these can actually be useful. i'm kind of struggling to think of polling data these campaigns have that could even be any more useful than that which is publicly available

all mods con (k3vin k.), Sunday, 11 November 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)

they can do messaging-type polls that are useful w/r/t how they run the campaign but there's no reason why they'd have any better info on the vs number than anyone looking at lots of public polls

iatee, Sunday, 11 November 2012 03:01 (thirteen years ago)

The Redstate article to which rev linked has some psycho trolling in those comments: there's an argument about which IT guys are more loyal!

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 November 2012 04:37 (thirteen years ago)

See I always though that the GOP shitshow + obviously repulsive Romney was a tactic from that side to make Dem voters complacent about THEIR candidate's victory. And that on election day people would say "Well, he's going to win against those loons, so I don't need to vote". Maybe the right wing media inadvertently made their base complacent, overconfidence leading to under performance.

I forgot to mention (because I rarely post) that I experienced what I feel safe in calling voter fraud this election, though not in the presidential race. A poll worker handed me a ballot that was already filled in with every CA ballot initiative. There was some wierd sleight-of-hand the guy was doing before he eventually gave me my ballot. It was very puzzling. Just more of an anecdote than anything.
