there are 2 people i know of similar age to me who had the luck of being included in a will of a grandparent and getting sizeable sum of money. the kind for putting a big down payment on a place, etc. instead, they both blew through all of it well before their families started and they have no money reserves to fall back on now that they have kids and still rent.

56 1/2. Pension cashout was projected to drop approx $250K, so jumped early from my 58 goal. SINK with basic lifestyle (no toys like motorcycles, boats, etc.) and owe less on house than it's worth, so felt lucky to do it.
