ok so my iphone was stolen

don't really care, it's just a thing, but i really want to recover my contacts i added between the time i switched from my old phone to my iphone. didn't download find my iphone and didn't link to icloud (i know, this was dumb). i heard there's a way you can recover contacts via itunes or something, because your computer backs up your iphone when you plug it in? (i have a PC btw)

halp

re: stolen iphone, did you do the remote lockdown/locator thing? maybe you can get it back?

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 17 November 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

no it's history, it's been 3 days. didn't download the find my iphone app

i've been on the phone with apple and sprint a bunch and there's no way to locate it without that app or setting up icloud apparently. they can't even wipe the phone - i had some passwords in my notes on the phone (also dumb) that i had to change. somehow i have a feeling that if i were the FBI it wouldn't be so hard to find it

chief beef (k3vin k.), Saturday, 17 November 2012 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

that's a bummer -- if you have a replacement phone already, try:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 17 November 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

It creates backups on your computer. Assuming you replace the phone with an iPhone you can you use your last backup to image that phone. I think that includes things like contacts...

everything says you need to turn the phone off while it dries and not turn it on to check if it's working, but i have tried to turn it off by guessing (probably accurately) where on the screen the sliding thing should be and it doesn't work. i can slide to lock and unlock the phone though.

i went there and they said go to apple store and pay replacement fee. so i went to apple store (which opened 2 hours later than the verizon store girl said, so i had to wait around for a while), and they said you need genius bar appointment and we don't have any. so i made an appointment at another store for this afternoon. i want to die.

Online Webinar Event for Dads (harbl), Sunday, 18 November 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

AT&T does early upgrades, but they're still expensive. When I lost my iPhone, I got a second line for $10/month in order to get the new service price on a replacement. Still a lot of money, but still cheaper than full price in the end, and I have become dependent on iPhone. Lesson learned: always get replacement insurance!

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Sunday, 18 November 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

apple store did it for $199. if i had gotten insurance through verizon it would be $10/month (i've had it for a year so $120) and $99 deductible. so i came out ahead!

Never get the replacement insurance. You are way better of putting it as scheduled personal property for the full value your HO or renters policy.

Alright, my 6s is on its last legs, sooner or later I'm gonna have to give it up.

Pros and cons of just buying an 8 vs the various newer models? Should I just get myself an android phone that has a headphone jack instead?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 15:37 (six years ago)

i'm in the same boat - just broke my screen for the first time ever, but on top of that it is a 5s that is on its last legs.

i plan on getting whatever the cheapest model is that has a headphone jack. i asked some friends if it was time to get an android and everyone said fuck no

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 15:41 (six years ago)

Weird, I also just broke my screen for the first time (with this particular phone) -- I've abused the hell out of it, but dropping it lightly onto a cushioned mat somehow cracked it.

The problem is I don't think there is an iPhone with a headphone jack anymore - they ended it with the 7.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 15:43 (six years ago)

I think the new iPhones are also bigger, which is another irritating thing and perhaps a reason to get the iPhone 8 (same size as the 6s I believe, which is already too fucking big).

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 15:45 (six years ago)

I switched to android a few years ago & experienced literally zero culture shock, don't get what the anti-android fuss is about. i use a pretty small number of apps though; i guess if you're firmly ensconced in the apple ecosystem (music, photos... email?) then moving might be a wrench.

The Pingularity (ledge), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 15:47 (six years ago)

That said, Amazon still has iPhone SE's and 6s's available and they're cheap. The problem, I imagine, is that eventually the iOS updates will brick these phones.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 15:48 (six years ago)

I'm actually tempted to just get another 6s -- under $200 for an unlocked refurbished 128GB. Not much more than it would cost to replace the screen and battery.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 15:51 (six years ago)

i got a 7 last year (cheapest available new one at the time, also smallest) and transitioned my old phone (5s?) to a music listening device bc it has an earphone jack. now phone is for phoning + other stuff & now i have a dedicated music device since my ipod is also croaking along.

here's my q -- if podcasts are as huge as they are and public opinion is drifting toward "it's not good to be addicted to your phone" when will they start making an ipod again?!!?!? do we have to wait for an anniversary or something?! i am happy to use my repurposed phone as an ipod but i will miss the clickwheel a lot

Dongles are cheap

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 16:44 (six years ago)

I don't like the dongle -- it's why I returned my 7 and bought the 6s in the first place. That said, I now have a lighting-to-usb dongle plus firefly headphone amp, and that plus the longer battery life of newer phones might do the trick, at least for in-house listening -- it's awkward but sounds really good, and my 6s doesn't really stand up to it.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 16:47 (six years ago)

it's not about the dongle, it's about the principle of having to have a dongle

This is what you should do imo.

sarahell, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:16 (six years ago)

One thing I read that was surprising is that in theory the lightning connection should be able to deliver better sound quality than the headphone jack. But few companies seem to make high quality lightning headphones, and also I don't want to shell out more money for another good pair that works only with my iphone.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:20 (six years ago)

i switched from android to iphone 1 1/2 yrs ago ... mainly because i was sick of having a bunch of redundant apps auto-installed on my phone ... how many different "maps" apps do I need? really??? geez ... anyway, android phones are fine. screenshots are easier on iPhone. I don't have a Mac computer, though.

sarahell, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:21 (six years ago)

my android is fine. It was really cheap and i like how it's nondescript. I also like that it's not slippery so I don't need a case.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:21 (six years ago)

i have an iPhone and don't have a case. I don't find it particularly slippery or in need of one, so idk

sarahell, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:36 (six years ago)

i can't remember which iphones I have had, maybe I just felt compelled to have one. I like how my current phone has a somewhat textured back.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:47 (six years ago)

hahaha i definitely think of it (and most apple products) as "expensive" and thus exercise a greater standard of care, maybe that's it?

sarahell, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

no, I just picked up my partner's iphone and it definitely feels more fragile (he doesn't have a case). He has dropped it a shitload though and it hasn't broken yet.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

The problem, I imagine, is that eventually the iOS updates will brick these phones.

Curious to know just how long you can continue to use models that can't be updated. I mean, can you just keep using old versions of apps? Do the app updates themselves eventually make the apps not run under old iOS?

My daughter has a 5C (can't be updated beyond 10.3.3), which she naturally complains about constantly (though if she hadn't maxed out storage with 6GB of TikTok videos it would run better) but I wonder if, used in a less bleedin'-edge way, it would happy run for years as a basic smartphone. I'm not replacing my 3yo SE until it dies (and the battery is failing). My ex just jumped ship to a mid-price Samsung, yet to hear how that's going.

one year passes...

iPhone question: I have had a 1st generation 64g SE which I bought when it released in 2016 and it is basically dying: dropping calls, now on its third battery it is spontaneously powering down or draining spontaneously, not properly updating apps. i need to get something new more or less this week. i'm already jammed into the apple ecosystem so i guess i'm getting another iphone.

I buy my phones in cash up front and always try to get whatever's newest so that it will last the longest amount of time without getting completely outdated, then get the extended coverage. If it isn't already clear, I intend to not upgrade anytime in the foreseeable future beyond this purchase. I don't give a fuck about phone fashion or bells and whistles, I just need a functional phone that performs at a reasonable speed and works. I am perfectly happy with the small screen of my SE; I just use my pad if I need a larger screen on the go. I'd also like something that I can rely on for the next five years or so without having to upgrade just because the current phone won't play with apple's latest updates.

I'm looking at the iphone 12 mini and the new iphone SE, both at 128g. 2 year coverage inclusive, the SE is $600, the 12 mini is $970.

Is there any really good reason i need to drop another $370 on the 12 or will the SE keep me happy? Given that my SE lasted five years, is there any reasonable doubt that the new SE will be unable to function on whatever apple throws at it through 2026?

trying to help a friend with storage issues on her iPhone

am I correct in assuming it should be possible to get by with 64 GB if you pay for an iCloud solution so (almost) no media is stored locally?

I can't parse this sentence:

iCloud Backup helps keep your data safe by making a copy of the information on your iPhone and iPad that isn't already synced to iCloud.

https://discussions.apple.com/article/HT207428

corrs unplugged, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 07:28 (two years ago)

64 GB would work if you don’t store or download any music photos or video. Meaning you stream everything and use iCloud for photos.

That quote refers to iCloud backup. Which backs up your phone to apples servers (iCloud) so that if you lose or replace your phone you can restore a copy of your data.

calstars, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 10:20 (two years ago)

Thanks!

I guess these days 64 GB is not a lot.

Too bad iPhones don't take SD cards, feels a bit wasteful to upgrade for something as simple as storage.

corrs unplugged, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 11:22 (two years ago)

64GB is still plenty for some people. If your friend is having storage issues on current phone, you don't say how large it is, but go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and see what's taking up space. If it's mainly Photos (which includes video) then just offloading those to a hard drive or paying for iCloud storage that covers them might mean 64GB works OK. But if it's Apps taking up a big chunk then yeah go bigger.

How does everyone handle emergency calls? I like keeping my phone on silent generally, but I want my partner to be able to reach me in case of emergency. The "Emergency Bypass" feature doesn't work for me because it would just notify me of every call from her; I want her to be able to indicate a call is important and have that break through silent mode.

We could just use a different app for emergency calls, and set Do Not Disturb to let that app through. I don't think Do Not Disturb can be triggered by the silent switch on the side of the phone, though, which is a hassle.

default damager (lukas), Thursday, 8 February 2024 00:30 (one year ago)

I think you could set up a focus to silence except for your wife

calstars, Thursday, 8 February 2024 00:41 (one year ago)

I find getting this kind of thing to work the way you want given how all the different focuses and settings interact requires a galaxy brain.
