this thread is for air jordan the shoe, and shit about mj in general. i grew up in chicago suburbs in the late 80s/90s so mj was my personal lord and savior. i'm still fascinated by him and by his sins: hawking sweatshop-labor $150 shoes that poor people in the very city he was playing for are literally killing each other over and not saying/doing shit about it, being a philandering gambling addict that probably bet on basketball, trying to fuck over the players union as charlotte bobcats GM, "republicans buy sneakers too", being one of the most powerful, influential people in the world and using that power solely to enrich himself, and in general seeming like a sociopathic dickbag. his hall of fame acceptance speech is worth watching on youtube-he seems so empty, like someone who has absolutely no personality outside of the thrill of defeating and humiliating other people.

cosign his acceptance speech.

if jordan had come up in the internet age he'd have been buried so deep in scandals it might have ruined his career or made him shape up and be a decent person

IVs and Vs are hard to beat

the late great, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 06:53 (twelve years ago)

Coach told us to use New Balance when I ran CC since Nike had shite for heel support in the early 90s.

He wasn't wrong.

jordans are p sick in that they made such an iconic design w/no logo on the side of the shoe, and theres still continuity through the diff models even tho theyre quite varied

the XII's are when I remember thinking 'ugh really' and they stopped being cool.

I dunno. I kinda like the 2's. But the 3's are superdope.

voted for IIIs w/o hesitation, tho its hard to argue w/ the original design. I think most of the 90s designs were a huge step down.

i remember being so impressed by the luxurious features of the vi.

finger holes on the tongue! a loop in the back! a lace-lock! this must be the easiest shoe in the world to put on!

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago)

I had the Is and IVs (I think? those are the "batman" ones right? they look a lil dif from how I remember them) Still remember going from store to store trying to get the Is since they were sold out most places. iirc the League banned them because they violated the uniform code.
The IIIs look pretty slick, weird I barely remember people wearing them back then.
Jordan was God to me, also, and like God he's an asshole.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago)

the ones in kids sizes were called sky jordans lol

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago)

I tried to get my mom to buy me jordans in sixth grade (1990), but she bought me some other kind of nike instead. It was a running shoe with a pink tongue. I was so desperate for nikes that I wore them. They were so much more comfortable than the chucks I had been wearing but damn, ma... I think that my failure to get yet another goddamned trendy thing that all my cool friends had put me even further on the outs with them and led to me spending more time at the headbanger/outcast table during lunch.

It's a bit depressing to think back on how these shoes carried so much importance wrt acceptance with peers, at my school at least.

I remember when baby jordans were the height of 'lol rich ppl are crazy'

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:02 (twelve years ago)

I had what I'm pretty sure were VI's in black with red trim. They were the first "expensive" sneakers my parents had ever let me buy, and the first day I wore them to school, I sprained my (extremely unathletic) ankle playing basketball. You can imagine how that went over. Subsequent attempts to buy "cool" sneakers also often backfired, e.g. the neon blue-green air huaraches I bought (a kid decided to ironically nickname me the "air huarache stud"), the nike running shoes ("you can barely even run!") and the reebok graphlites that were promoted by olympic disappointments dan and dave. I think some of my relative lack of materialism may have grown out of these experiences.

i can really relate to the stories of shoe shame here, people in my middle school were completely obsessed with basketball shoes. i eventually settled on buying once-cool shoes like 2-3 years after they were cool, which was at least cooler than off-brand. my biggest boner was buying nikes with a really, really big swoosh, like they looked like nike tennis classics but the swoosh extended past the normal point and were painted onto the side of the sole. i remember the first day i got them getting roundly mocked and thinking "fuck.....i have to wear these for 6 months now"

only pair cool of sneaks I ever owned were the nike air more uptempo

  • LA Raiders
  • LA Kings
  • Chicago Bulls
  • Chicago White Sox
(i lived in a small town in massachusetts at the time)

yah I have visions of the charlotte hornets one

乒乓, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:41 (twelve years ago)

haha i also coveted starter jackets, i finally got one with the chicago blackhawks logo. close enough i guess.

slam dunk, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:43 (twelve years ago)

this might be another thread in itself but: would you buy your kid stuff like this, even if you thought it was ridiculous and horrible, if you thought it would make their childhood experience more pleasant? first impulse is to say yes but what if it sowed the seeds of making your kid an awful person later in life. makes u think
