what does your handwriting reveal about you?

are you a neat writer? do you use a ruler underneath the pen to keep your letters straight and with a nice clean edge to their bottoms? ( yes i have seen it done!! ).
or is your handwriting completely illegible to anyone other than you, with even you being mystified at a later date..?
do you print, use big lettering, scrawl..........
i wonder at times if the art of handwriting may one day disappear altogether as we use keyboards more and more.
this, to me, would be a tragedy.
i love looking at peoples' writing, it says so much about them.

donna (donna), Monday, 23 September 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

my writing is becoming more messy as i am more busy lately and rushing i guess. and it has developed into a kind of odd print/write, with often some letters not being recognisable at all.
but it is MINE and i like it well enough.

donna (donna), Monday, 23 September 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It reveals I use the interweb too much.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 September 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

my handwriting has definitely degenerated since i stopped using a pen and started using a keyboard. i get cramp writing postcards now and wonder how i used to write for three hours solid during exams.

what does it reveal about me? nothing. i don't believe in graphology.

angela (angela), Monday, 23 September 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I will scan some of my handwriting later, I think it's quite neat.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 09:32 (twenty-three years ago)

My handwriting is a big mass of slanting vertical lines, always has been. I think it looks quite masculine and also a bit of a mess, but someone flipping through my notepad the other day said they really liked it.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

that i write with my left foot.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

that i write with my left foot.

duane (doorag), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Duane has two left feet!

And Tom can write upside down! I've seen him do it - it's v. impressive!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

''Duane has two left feet!''

yes andrew it is the next step in human evolution.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

that I posess absolutely no pen control to speak of

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

It is a perverse version of the cursive I learned in third grade. And I don't use it, really (typing doesn't cause my hand to cramp up, whereas writing non-stop for even a couple of minutes does).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I rarely write these days. I usually type.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh i love writing and should do it more. i really like my writing when it's neat but i'm not sure what a graphologist wd make of it. it's kind of semi-joined up and has a certain rhythm... i write rhythically. i like the physicality of the printed/written word as opposed to computer screens.

katie (katie), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually do writing on the computer.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Tall and quite loopy. I've started writing passages of the thesis by hand, detailed bits that need focus. It feels like I'm thinking more straight and solid.

Ellie (Ellie), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not tall and loopy. Well, not that tall.

Ellie (Ellie), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

A random collection of loops and swirls.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It proves I'm a good speller

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a few other styles of handwriting than this, but this one looks like my blackboard handwriting if a little tighter.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

mine is a mess, sometimes pinched, sometimes scrawling, often with pictures, shorthand ,abbrevations, odd puncation and other nonesense. black ink always, my letters often look similar, and i like it.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and my fs, ds, ts, hs, k,ls, capial Is and ps, often go over two or more lines, my zeds are slashed and so are my 7s.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

My handwriting is atrocious. Well, I think it is but my friends like it. Some teachers at my school didn't approve of it but their handwriting isn't much better.

Shaz, Monday, 23 September 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

and i do most if not all of my first drafts, and 90 per cent of my revisions with pen

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

we were forced to learn joined-up writing at school. i rebelled against it, to an extent.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Writing joined-up is quicker.

Shaz, Monday, 23 September 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not have my own handwriting! It's true!

Mandee, Monday, 23 September 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Jel, that so looks like you! I can't explain it, but it's true!

My writing has been described as "psychopathic", but I reckon that with a decent pen it's quite nice and individual. Small and refined rather than big and showy. Occasionally reverts to childishness, though.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 23 September 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A friend once analysed my handwriting. I can't remember much of what he said except that my lower case g proves I am sexually deviant. Hmmm.

Madeleine, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 07:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone claims to have messy handwriting, till they see mine.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 07:14 (twenty-three years ago)

untidy, fast, small, hard to read. That's not so far from a description of me, so fair enough.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I have beautiful handwriting. I'm sorry, but it's true.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I have very neat handwriting, always printed. I'm a pretty messy person otherwise though.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I can write quite neatly when it really matters, but most of the time it's just hastily-scrawled, like this ..

C J (C J), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I get annoyed with trying to write with my hand. A keyboard is so much faster. Just about the only time I enjoy writing by hand is when I do a "write through," when I brainstorm about a particular problem or issue. Somehow I am more willing to slow down enough to write by hand in that case, because it reinforces my effort to focus narrowly on one subject.

My handwriting has never fully recovered from my attempts to take notes really quickly in college, though it wasn't too good before then either. It tends to be illegible. If I don't expect to need to understand what I have written at a later date, I write even more illegibly. It's sort of "short term memory."

I think I have about four or five ways of writing a lower case "t," probably depending on what other letters are adjacent.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I get annoyed with trying to write with my hand. A keyboard is so much faster.

I feel the same way -- handwriting these days inevitable causes a cramp or something within about five minutes if not sooner.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i just gave out a present for the secret santa thing addressed in my own handwriting and someone said knowledgeably "oh, this has been written left handed so we can't tell who it's from"

isadora (isadora), Friday, 6 December 2002 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
Couldn't actually find the thread where people had posted examples of their handwriting, etc., but I have cam now, etc., so --

(Getting some Spanish and Italian practice in there while I'm at it.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, wrong one --

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It's so weird to see a joke like that existing in a physical form out in the real world somewhere.

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's why I did it :) IT'S OUT OF THE MATRIX NOW, LAWNMOWER MAN'S GONNA GET US!

... and give us pineapple zombie blowjobs. Or something.

It's tucked into my Moleskine now, how tacky is that?

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That depends what a Moleskine is.

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post, obviously)

Tep, that's funk-ay.

My handwriting reveals that I have little imagination! Really. It looks slightly generic, a bit of a rehash of various lessons learned when taking varied penmanship classes early on in my life, a bit of a case of similarity to Mom's handwriting, a bit loopy, a bit feminine, and a bit rushed. Of course, the more time I spend on computers, the less legible my writing turns out to be, but I suspect that with most everyone.

I used to have handwriting very much influenced by calligraphy, though, because I learned calligraphy from the fourth to the fifth grades and it heavily influenced the way I wrote for a long while.

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear. I mean, "oh dear, if you don't grok Moleskine, that sounded really dodgy," not "oh dear, you don't know what the three shells are for!!"

Anyway, Moleskines -- pretentious, arty, but damn handy notebooks.
