This week, who knows? But tomorrow I'm seeing Toots Thielemans at the Palais de Beaux Arts

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Friday 27th would have been our 10th wedding anniversary.

Nath said she might possibly come over to London on Sunday but from her above post I assume that she isn't.

My plan for the week, therefore:

Keep working (I have to now, being a professional and all that ahem). Try to square in my mind exactly what kind of distance I should keep between myself and others. When there's too much distance and too little distraction, that's a deadly combination. Drift too far away from people and you can never reach them again (e.g. nearly everyone I/Laura knew in Oxford). Drift too close to people, things get over-intense, they retreat.

I need to get out more too...not just to work, or to get records and books, I mean get out properly, as in trying to meet and link with other people. I'm not doing nearly enough of that at the moment. And it's up to me to open my door and let people in. At the moment I feel as though I'm searching for the right door in the dark.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 23 September 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

marcello, no, but i am trying to find a way to visit london. :-(

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know if there is a dress code for the black and white ball??

Sarah (starry), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Oxford T*mp**lin meet, anyone (er, Mark, dave k, jellybean except she hasn't posted for ages and will be there anyway because it's a gig and it's the LAW that she's there)? But I probably can't actually go myself and I would have to convince myself that none of the people who hate me and would enjoy laughing at how fat I have become since I last allowed myself out in public would be there.

I did nothing last week. I didn't even pay my credit card bill, which was foolish, because now it's a week late and I'll have to pay two days' wages. This is my own fault for being too crap to remember bills or to get a job that pays better but I like to complain. I will probably do nothing next week. I'm so rock and roll...

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Last week: did almost nothing, except work.

This week: going to Argentina on Wednesday (hooray)!

nory (nory), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, the guy who posted good/bad things about Oxford and is presumably living there now. How were the 80s Matchbox Stupidly Long Name? How was, well, every gig this year? I hate being so sad and lonely and fat. Was going to stop being so rubbish and go and see Max Tundra in Bristol or Reading but there were no trains home after 10pm and streetmap.co.uk wouldn't show me how to get to the stations anyway and grr. And it's not like I could've got home from the station anyway. RAGE. Check your hotmail acct if you still want the tape I have been too rubbish to do, btw.

Tuesday In different office doing holdiday cover, working with my friends Suzy and Susan. Ended up in pub with Suzy and my mate Ben. Finally reached someone I'd been trying to get hold of all week and had to do phone interview in pub toilets.

Thursday Had lunch with my friend Malik. Evening went to Camden to see Lucas' band do their first proper gig. Went back to their flat, got very drunk.

Friday Woke up in all my clothes, including demin jacket with handbag over one arm. Legged it to south bank. Went to pub with Suzy,Susan, Ben and others. Went to Two Brewers in Clapham. Ended up with a bloke called Dean teaching me how to Vogue to Bananarama.

Wednesday and onwards: How organised do you want me to be?

Anna (Anna), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

(Good things about having done nothing during the past, er, 18 months: I have not done any work either. On the other hand maybe I'd actually feel less bored and useless if I had. No, I think ILX beats doing what I'm told to all the same.)

(Right, time to add another line break and delete it again just in case anyone's bored enough to check the last modified date. I hope the sysadmins aren't bored enough to use cksum or anything.)

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 23 September 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will be asked to go to the After Skool Club, but shall refuse!!

oh no! i went there earlier this summer, it was...terrible (and slightly embarrassing!)

maura (maura), Monday, 23 September 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

(Last Week) MONDAY - bought groceries, cleaned kitchen - TUESDAY - Buffy and then I think talked to Nory for a while - WEDNESDAY - weekly Wednesday get-together at friends M and S's, much playing of Halo (attn: D. Howie) - THURSDAY - I don't recall, actually, but I finished a song at some point so it was probably then - FRIDAY - to suburbs to visit old friend who is leaving town; played with old friend's two very young children and created existential crisis by momentarily convincing one that the teeth in his mouth were actually mine and my teeth had gotten into his mouth - SATURDAY - clubs with large shifting group of friends and acquaintances in a Ronanesque vibe-feeling way - SUNDAY - slouch back to M and S's to watch Sopranos and groan and compare at what post-sunrise hour we managed to fall asleep (winner: noon); more Halo (attn: D. Howie).

This week: no idea. Buffy, I suppose; interview to set up that keeps slipping through planning cracks; need to pick up bicycle from faraway place where I locked it after a tire blew out; two things to right; go out with weird girl from Georgia who I met at Le Tigre show last month and then very weirdly called me yesterday.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna is that Malik that was in your office when I was there? I thought he was a very good laugh, really seemed to know his music.

Last week:
Monday:I forget

Tuesday:Had driving lesson.

Wednesday:Went to town to get a driving licence, looked at CDs but managed to not buy one.

Thursday:More driving lessons. Collected my bro from the airport, he was back from London for the weekend.

Friday:Failed driving test, didn't care too much surprisingly. Went and had lunch with friend Phil and my brother, then went drinking with Phil, my brother, and some of my brother's mates. Got a lift home with best mate who happened to be calling over to mine, played him some MP3s which my brother had given me on CD "Vitalic live, wahey!", then got a lift to the off licence and went to another friends house. Was slightly drunk and high and talked bollox to mate's girlfriend who said "god you're way more sociable after a few drinks". Then went to the local pub and talked to another friend about the impending Darren Emerson gig on Saturday. Went home, slept.

Saturday:Got up and had lunch with my sister and her boyfriend who were also home for the weekend. Chatted to brother's wife and brother most of the day. Then read for a while. Met mates at 7.30 and had a few beers before going into town to see Mr Darren Emerson, nice and early so we'd see the afore mentioned Phil do his set too. Club was packed and we had a mad time, left club at 5, went to mates house, all my friends conked out except me and one guy, we drank some beer, I am not a caner normally! So we ended up very hyper and kind of insane, called to local shops to buy skins at 8, then went home at about 11.

Sunday evening, went for meal with family.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Arr, transport not looking good for tomorrow, ho hum. As ever. Greyness, sleep, repeat. Play Oxford again at some point when I've regrown a life, and bring Max Tundra with you...

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah that's him. I haven't seen him for ages, he's gone off to a fancy new job. I was working in the same building so we went and had lunch. Lovely bloke, crap at table football though.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

GO TO TOMPAULIN OR I'LL KILL YOU REBECCA

P.S. I know where you live.
P.P.S. Unless you really can't get there, in which case I'll just prod you with a stick or something.

Graham (graham), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I can get THERE, but the people who run the Cellar would probably quite like me to leave again afterwards.

But, having just grumbled about spending two days' wages on being a moron and not paying a credit card bill for about a fifth of the cost of the fee on time, I might be even more foolish and spend three days' wages on a taxi home. But I shouldn't. So. I will think about it. And if I regain my financial senses I will prod myself - hur hur, Dan to thread, and so on - with my nice sharp new 2B pencil (actually, I bought a 4H too, that's probably more painful) instead.

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 23 September 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark H has a very comfy sofa you know.

(No to back him into a courtesy corner or anything. Sorry Mark)

Graham (graham), Monday, 23 September 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

last week: dinner with my friend's dad & sister on tuesday, kept thinking that I needed to wash my car but never got around to it, read a lot, had dinner with a friend who I hadn't seen in a year
this week: last week at my job, so I'm going to die from the stress of trying to finish everything.
next week: new job that I'm terrified about

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I forgot this week!

Yesterday-Bought jeans, and a hoodie, and a sweater. Went out to discuss the weekend in friends house, had fun in moderation.

Today:Try and write something. Read more of Irvine Welsh's new book. Listen to MP3s, later this evening maybe go out for a drink.

Tomorrow:Find friend Rob who I haven't seen all summer and do something with him, maybe the cinema, who knows.

Thursday:Unknown (handy escape word gareth)

Friday: Don't know what I'll do in the day but Friday is always a night for going out with my friends who live near me, should be a laugh as usual.

Saturday:Go into town and look at decks with a view to buying some. Then the highlight of the week will be Plump DJs in a tiny but banging club with friends. I am attempting to give up drugs for a month following Saturday so I'd better enjoy myself or else I'll have to fail.

Sunday:Sleep.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, you forgot that you texted me while out drinking on sunday morning at 10!!

Change my plans for today to form filling and agency visiting seeing as those gits at BIC decided to find an internal candidate, grrrrrr.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, you texted me too at nine! But I was awake, having gone to bed around night the night before to sleep off two days of hangover.

Bad luck Chris, at least the agency man likes you.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, I texted you two, my brother, and my sister. It was a really odd morning and I didn't know what to make of it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

as it happened, I didn't see Tompaulin last night because they cancelled. Apparently, the keyboard player has just quit the band.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It is too depressing to address a whole fortnight: today is bad enough. Because of the tube strike I booked the day off work, but I had a ticket for the last film in the National Film Theatre's Kon Ichikawa season, probably the one I was most keen to see because it was co-written with Kurosawa. It had to be the bus, obviously. I caught the night version a few weeks back - every 15 minutes, took about 40 minutes. Given the tube strike and the time of day, I allowed well over two hours. When half that time had gone and no such bus had turned up, I gave up and came home again. Maddening.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still up for prodding Rebecca.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Behave yourself, Graham!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Shan't.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 26 September 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

G: fnarr. M: Ouch. So in some ways it is good that I was kept home by remembering more as-yet-unpaid bills. But poor Ktee.

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 26 September 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I had to look up fnarr in an interweb slang dictionary. You are so completely unproddable.

NB :)

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

What did it say? I want to know if my attempts to promote the Finbarr-Saunders*/"for no apparent reason" duality of the single-R version have been recognised yet. I found myself saying "for no apparent reason" a lot, so it seemed natural to abbreviate it, and I liked the ambiguity of the abbreviation and was encouraged to use it even more, but I had to abandon this quest because it confused too many people. Six months later they were doing it too. So if it spreads I demand credit, oh yes.

[* Viz = dud (I suppose I picked it up from 80s ZX Spectrum magazines instead, which should probably be even more embarrassing), but I do like the name Finbarr Saunders, and I think it is a terrible shame that there is no scan of the Student Grant "...but we gave you some pogs..." cartoon online. If anyone reading this has any idea what I'm talking about then make my day and scan it in so I can realise that it wasn't actually that good in the first place.]

What's with the red "unread answers" bit? It's very pretty but I haven't yet worked out the difference between the red ones and the black ones.

Rebecca (reb), Saturday, 28 September 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I can no longer find it so perhaps your version has crushed it into obscurity. Hurrah.

Red unread counts are for things you've already looked at once, though it may be a bit intense. Pretty, but intense. It's cuz I only bother with like 3 ILM threads ever and I like to see when the ones I have looked at have been added to.

(Am I the only person in the world to use pico to edit PHP scripts over a Java SSH client from a slEazyInterwebCafe? And to add such a useless feature? I hope so)

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 September 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

graham i like this feature (in a year's time the ilxor colour-coding will require pantone numbers to keep track of it!!)

ps also i just emailed you on the mac.com address as promised

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 28 September 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we have them in green if they are the types of threads we actually read? The system could build up a profile of each poster based on what kinds of thread we most often post to, read or ignore, then work out that I might well not be as interested in 'Anyone Coming To The Stereophonics Gig In Dunedin' as 'Grant Morrison Joins Pulp', for instance. I don't think this is too much to ask, is it?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

but you can't always tell what threads you will be interested in, such is the joy and mystery of ILX!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

It could make guesses! Actually, on a rainbow scale would be good - red if it's a really great one full of stuff I'd love, violet if it's dull and irrelevant to me. Maybe the brightness of the colour could be determined by the number of posts by people I have registered as my favourites on the thread where we name such. Come on, Graham!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

(personally, blue is good enough for me)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

And the names of the threads could be animated!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeh, make the effort Graham.
