Thunderbirds was crucial, but UFO was the perfect wish-fulfillment for a ten year old who in the future would have loved to run an alien counter-intelligence operation complete with space interceptors, a submarine, and a secret moon base crewed by purple-haired babes. And the whole works is disguised as a movie studio.

Always loved how Captain Blue looked like the actor who voiced him (Ed Bishop, who also played Straker in UFO).

i guess i'm showing my age. i wouldn't've seen thunderbirds or captain scarlet when they first aired but i guess there've been many repeats over the years. certainly i've seen Fireball XL5 and Stingray at one time or other and the odd clip here and there of earlier stuff.

think ed bishop's hair wasn't as white as captain blue's - it was dyed for his Straker role, dyed so much it started falling out iirc.

love the way the titles for UFO flashes up "1980" as if it was the far future (which i guess it was at the time)

Ah, one of RAI's Italian guest stars. It's a good one, that. I just love the incidental music on that first season.

I loved Space: 1999, but haven't seen it at all since original broadcast (watched on our little black and white TV). Didn't discover Thunderbirds til years later, when I could only regret not seeing it as a kid.

I saw most of the early Space: 1999s in B&W too. My aunt had a colour TV - End Of Eternity (the one with Peter Bowles) was the first episode I saw in colour.

fave episode of space 1999 is the space station filling up with foam to a soundtrack of Mars, Bringer of War. (Space Brain)

that and the corridor that eats people. may even be the same episode.

I have all these Andersons lined up after zero prior exposure. Finished Supercar, currently working through Fireball XL5 with Stingray next in the mix. I've been really appreciating the work that Anderson and Eiji Tsuburaya were doing simultaneously at opposite ends of the world and on differing scales. Anderson's shows were essentially tokusatsu, afaic.

Stingray and Thunderbirds were being reshown when I was a kid alongside Joe 90 and Captain Scarlet and possibly a couple of others. I was aware of UFO too , saw most of Space 1999 when it was first shown and then later stuff like Terrahawks and Space Police. Haven't come across repeats of Fireball XL5 before.
I do like Sylvia Anderson's clothing designs especially from the mid 60s onwards. Though might rethink some details. String vest tshirts for one.
