So yeah, thanks to everyone who voted! There's some surprises in here I think, so hopefully most of you are here to watch things go horribly right or wrong depending on how you voted. Going to roll out a top 13, not because of triskedecaspookiness, but because that way only things that got more than one vote will place. Does that mean that some peoples #1 might not show up? Yes, because in life, just as in horror movies, sometimes the ending sucks. Plus hey, heightened tension and all that.
After the rollout finishes I'll post the whole list so we can all yell at each other.

Could really easily have been a cheap, lazy Poltergeist / Exorcist rip but it was really well handled. Interested to see Red Lights now.

It was a surprise for me too, hadn't really heard anything about it and stumbled across it thx to netflix instant watch. Acting is heads above most of the handheld cam/FF stuff, a (mostly) good script, a bit of a fall apart at the very end sort of thing, but well worth watching.
oh i should prob explain tiebreaker rules. in case of a points tie, the winner is the one with the most #1 votes. if that still leaves a tie, the film that gets the biggest number of votes wins. if both of those fail, life sucks, it's just a tie.

Another surprisingly effective one. Hated BWP so went in with really low expectations but it ended up being one of the most unsettling films on my list, despite some flaws.

I know that "from the maker of the Blair Witch Project" probably does more harm as a tagline these days then good, but this is def worth watching. minimal shakycam that really only intrudes a lot in the beginning, and then the movie turns into a dark, grim and moody headtrip. Not sure I am totally down with the storyline, but there's enough meat there to still make it all worthwhile. xpost

BTBR is a movie that i want to like more than i do. still good at what it does, but maybe the worst ending misstep i have seen in a horror movie in a long long time. fantastic soundtrack tho, and some visual tricks that are absolutely stunning. worth seeing, but make sure you aren't tired when you watch it because it is a slow grower.

― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)
just watched this last week. good acting, john hawkes is awesome in everything, didnt like it. definitely subject to the old boring "is it a horror movie?" argument, but mostly felt very rudderless and oddly remote from its subject in a lot of ways.
― tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)
i promise that its not my intention to do the crossed-arms harrumphing at other peoples choices, btw, MMMM just left me cold.
― tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)
voted for this even though it wasn't nearly as exciting as i wanted it to be (it was heavy on the gauzy/dirty hot babes, not as much about the cult, made it seem like an ill-conceived tumblr fashion shoot imo)
― passion it person (La Lechera), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)
Surely the rudderless/remote aspect was deliberate, though? Weirdly enough, I think the scene that ruined the movie for me was the one that was most explicitly out of a horror (or rather, a Haneke) film.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)
not as much about the cult
hmmm you just cut my interest in this movie in half.
― Q-Tip—blessed Q-Tip! (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)
oh yeah, i think that the feel of the movie was intentional, i just dont think it really worked for me
― tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)
it's very fashiony, not heavy on the mind control (there are some good parts, and i was excited to see it based on that, but it did not give the cult details i wanted) instead there was a lot of listing around in dirty tshirts and cartoonishly square sister & her husband.
but i voted for it because for a movie about petulant rich girls in dirty clothes who get brainwashed by a guitar wielding backcountry perv, it was pretty good.
― passion it person (La Lechera), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)
jumping back to lovely molly for a moment, the thing thats the most amazing about it not sucking is that the last film that dude made was "Seventh Moon" which was a total shitshow.
― tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:18 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, MMMM's main function was probably as a showcase reel for its director and actors (much like lots of debut horror films), but that said, it's a darn good showcase.
― The Thnig, Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)
i p much just want cult details. I want a cult procedural, basically. What is the garb? What are the house rules? Everyone has to ball the leader, y/n?
― Q-Tip—blessed Q-Tip! (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

i highly recommend the oregonian to anyone who hasnt seen it. If you like your horror lynchian and weirdo, it's the best thing that 2011 had to offer. please note - its probably got the lowest imdb rating of all the films on this list, but iirc most people who rate things on imdb are idiots and wrong. there are several eye of the duck moments in the oregonian, and they are all tremendously effective, legitimate spine chills several times for me.
― tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)
i did not like what the oregonian did to me but i have no problem calling it an excellent film.

yeah the oregonian def wants to get under your skin, and does a pretty good job of it i think. its a mean little movie in a lot of ways, very creepy and very claustrophobic in some way thats hard to identify. was my #2 for the year.
― tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

― tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
so far, i've only seen centipede 2, black rainbow and MMMM. centipede's the only one that made my list, cuz, though i hated it at the time, it's effective, gnarly and has some real staying power.
just saw MMMM, and while i admired the photography and central performance, it didn't do much for me. didn't mind the dirty hot fashion shoot styling, but it was hard to get a grip on the cult's methods and appeal. without drugs, explicit "brainwashing" or religion, how is this devotion instilled? how, in just two years, was martha's whole world so profoundly reordered? the movie expects us to accept that it was and moves on from there, but i was a little disappointed. loved the "marcie's song" scene, though. good ending, too.
beyond the black rainbow has style to spare, but not much else. loved it for half an hour, forty-five minutes, but then got bored. and yeah, the ending's a major disappointment.
just started watching take shelter. dunno how it's gonna turn out, but so far, it's more satisfactory as a horrorish non-horror movie than MMMM.

Livid was my #1. I re-watched it tonight cuz, though I'm glad to have pushed it into the top 3, I hadn't seen it but once. It's great, no regrets. ShariVari says it's "never genuinely thrilling", and I might concede that point, despite some impressive peak moments. It's seductive, though, and to me, that counts for more than visceral thrills. Atmospheric, spooky, romantic, unpredictable, unsettling and quite beautiful. My kind of thing.
