D'yer Mak'er? Another BEDDING poll

A sequel of sorts to the sheet-change poll. It took me years to appreciate the simple virtue of making my bed every day. So how about you? (If someone besides you makes the bed, it still counts. The question is really, made or not?)

I can't make the bed when my wife is still inhabiting it.

Aimless, Friday, 28 December 2012 04:24 (twelve years ago)

But does she make it when she gets up? Or does it just stay rumpled til bedtime?

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 28 December 2012 04:25 (twelve years ago)

i throw the covers back on it most mornings, but i only 'make' it properly maybe twice a week

banlieue jagger (darraghmac), Friday, 28 December 2012 04:25 (twelve years ago)

i generally pull the covers up, somewhat? not sure i'd go so far as to say i *make* the bed

mookieproof, Friday, 28 December 2012 04:25 (twelve years ago)

i know my hospital corners tho

mookieproof, Friday, 28 December 2012 04:26 (twelve years ago)

Unless I come along and make it, she generally does not.

Aimless, Friday, 28 December 2012 04:26 (twelve years ago)

the joy of being growed up in my own house is not making my bed

only when company comes over, unless closing the bedroom door suffices

I get that. I think for me -- because I've never been good at organizing things -- the revelation was that having a made bed made a huge difference in how the room and really the house felt. There could still be some stuff piled in the corners, but if the bed was made, the chaos was contained. Plus it really only takes like 2-3 minutes in the morning. A small investment for a big payoff when I come home and the house seems somewhat under control.

(I make my kids' bed too, and I can tell it makes a difference in the care they take of the rest of their room. Of course, someday I want them to make it themselves, but I'm trying to lead by example.)

made beds theory

mookieproof, Friday, 28 December 2012 04:42 (twelve years ago)

ha, exactly!

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 28 December 2012 04:43 (twelve years ago)

it does make the house look nice, i agree

when i clean from top to bottom i occasionally make the bed & it is like the cherry on top

but i am still stubborn in my laziness mostly

I once read or heard that bedbugs prefer made beds. Have taken it as a ringing endorsement of my slob lifestyle ever since.

what the hell does making the bed even mean

乒乓, Friday, 28 December 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago)

hasn't anybody ever noticed how uncomfortable hotel beds are

乒乓, Friday, 28 December 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago)

do you want your home bed to be a hotel bed??

乒乓, Friday, 28 December 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago)

what the hell does making the bed even mean

Individual standards vary, obviously. For me it means peeling back the layers of bedding, and then reapplying them one at a time and straightening and flattening as I go. Pillows go back on last. The result does not look like a hotel bed -- the quilt and comforter are too rumpled and raggedy -- but presents a relatively tidy and welcoming appearance.

The paradox for me: although my bedroom is for sleeping and I'm never in it from the time I awaken until it's time for bed, I can't leave the bed unmade. Childhood habits and so on.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 28 December 2012 14:40 (twelve years ago)

Our bed linens consist of sheets and a down comforter, so the last one up makes the bed every day, but that consists of straightening the pillows and pulling up the sheet and comforter. It takes 30 seconds. Sometimes (just this morning) I make Jeff's side of the bed while I'm still in it.

I'm generally pretty tidy so I would probably make the bed regardless of my inclination, because if we didn't, our sheets would be covered in cat hair in one day. Our lazy old cats spend their entire day sleeping on the bed and will opportunistically immediately snuggle into the warm spot you leave behind if you out of bed and don't pull the covers up.

every day.
but its nothing more than straightening the duvet, pillows and putting on the bedspread cover ...
but has to be done every day ...

mark e, Sunday, 30 December 2012 11:48 (twelve years ago)

Voted "Every day (not a savage, thank you)" with the caveat that I regularly eat on top of the made bed, as though it were some sort of picnic blanket, which I think reactivates my savage status.
