Dead Pool 2013

Let's do this.

Rules are generally the same as in previous years.

Post in this thread a list of 15 celebrities or other notable people. If you'd rather e-mail me, that's fine, but please post in the thread that you've done so, just so I can keep track.

I'm not going to be a total stickler about notability requirements, but please try to be reasonable. I'd rather not allow someone without, for instance, a Wikipedia entry. On a related note, if a Wikipedia search on one of your picks directs to a disambiguation page or to someone else with the same name, please indicate which one you mean by appending the person's profession in parentheses, e.g. "(actress)" or "(football player)."

As usual, points are awarded based on the formula (100 - [age at death]). So picking Quvenzhané_Wallis (age 9) would get you a lot more points than picking Zsa Zsa Gabor (age 95), were both to die.

Please post your lists to this thread by January 9. No lists will be accepted after that date. If someone dies before Jan. 9, only the people who have already submitted lists will be able to collect points. You may also revise your list at any time before Jan. 9; after that, you'll be locked in.

Lastly, I will be posting everybody's final picks to this Google spreadsheet and also updating the leaderboard there as the year goes on.

(Feel free, of course, to bump this thread and alert me if I've missed an update. Deaths of British/Australian celebs in particular often pass me by.)

Good luck!

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 19:47 (twelve years ago)

(ok, maybe the dog doesn't count)

I actually deleted the "Humans only" rule this year but only b/c I figured it no longer needed to be explicitly stated. But, well, I guess it does.

HUMANS ONLY.

jaymc, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

Kate Middleton's unborn (controv!)

I'm also not sure about this one. My inclination is to allow it but only once the child is actually born. That is, no points for a miscarriage or stillbirth.

jaymc, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

(that still leaves the door open for abortion!)

Tempted to play a wishful thinking list but it always makes me feel faintly guilty, this game.

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 22:42 (twelve years ago)

Last year I got really into researching people in poor health, and half my ballot was names I hadn't previously known. State senators and local musicians and other folks just barely famous enough to have a Wikipedia page. I won't do it again, though -- it made me feel queasier than just going with my usual crop of celebs and world leaders.

johnny crunch, Thursday, 3 January 2013 12:17 (twelve years ago)

I had more family deaths last year, and I don't want to offend my family, so I'm staying out of this much loved game this year. You guys are being tasteful though (old people, drug abusers, dictators)...

โตเกียวเหมียวเหมียว aka Italo Night at Some Gay Club (Mount Cleaners), Thursday, 3 January 2013 12:42 (twelve years ago)

my only real criteria this year was "prominent residents of l.a." I don't wish death on any of them. I hope to not even place this year. I specifically didn't go hunting for cancer patients this year. maybe all the dead pool spirit has gone out of me. but I'm still compelled to play.

Can I switch my Fidel Castro to Karl Rove and my Mubarak to John McCain? At this point I'm more interested in going for long-shot wishful thinking.

No, I don't enter it, the payoff is much smaller than the money they take in. I would have been somewhere in the 80s with my unpaid list.

(Then a bunch of people tied for 6th with the Hugo/Maggie twofer.)

I hope you know, I only did not add Thatcher to my list this year as it seems that everyone I put on my list last year, survived...

I need a revised score too (had Scott Carpenter)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 14:18 (eleven years ago)

I see my list of people who will have good health and survive has bode well for Alan Vega, Valerie Singleton et al.

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 14:21 (eleven years ago)

Now updated for Mandela and Carpenter.

No one had O'Toole or Fontaine. Was surprised that ailsa didn't have Ronnie Biggs.

jaymc, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:31 (eleven years ago)

I was surprised too! I've had him a few times in the past. I think at the time I forgot he didn't actually die at any time after he was released from jail four years ago to die at home (my reason for keeping included Al Megrahi)

ailsa, Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:08 (eleven years ago)

Barring any last-minute surprises, the final standings for 2013 appear to be set:

1. kate78 (133 points: Hugo Chavez, Margaret Thatcher, Annette Funicello, Bernadette Nolan)
2. nostormo (106: Chavez, Roger Ebert, Lou Reed, Nelson Mandela)
3. Elvis Telecom (97: Chavez, Thatcher, Funicello, Scott Carpenter)
4. abanana (95: Van Cliburn, Bonnie Franklin, Chavez)
5. Matt Armstrong (72: Chavez, Ebert)

Congrats to kate78!

jaymc, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 01:14 (eleven years ago)

Btw, I've decided not to run an ILX Dead Pool for 2014, though if anyone else would like to take over, I'll gladly participate.

jaymc, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 01:19 (eleven years ago)

Betty Davis lives another year. In other news: Lyndon LaRouche will never die.

Viceroy, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 01:20 (eleven years ago)

And all my guesses had a healthy year.

Did not nom Thatcher for that very reason.

Mark G, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 01:23 (eleven years ago)

Jack T. Chick will never die either.
