the music snob thread, the mouse on mars thread; hell, everyday there's something. i can't take it no longer

the word "pretentious" has lost all meaning. did it ever have any?there is no part of it that cannot be explained in more focused, diverse and fruitful ways. it says nothing about its receiver and everything about those who use it. it is a peremptory lash-out last (but always first) resort to hiding behind a generic cryptofascist mass level (of what? understanding?) THAT IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN THERE. if this word has ever been in yr vocabulary i hate you.

phil masstransfer can defend it reasonably lucidly and non anti-intellectually

i fall at the "lucid" fence and also prefer to use it as a yo-word not a a no-word

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, got a little bombastic there. but if i ever use it it's a yo-word only cos i like the deliciousness of how it would grate those who use it the no-way.

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

it = whatver i was commenting on

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

furthermore i would imagine phil's explanation might be acceptable, but i doubt it would be the reflex thinking of those who spring to use the word. and what is language but its users?

We had a thread on this! I remember writing a very pretentious post about why I don't believe in pretentious. Also something about it being an American invention.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the word "dilatante" (and it's relatives) better, as it implies that the person has an incomplete or (better) superficial knowledge of what they're talking about.

just as bad though is the time-worn dud "judgemental".

mike (ro)bott, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like the word as well.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron A., Tuesday, 24 September 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"whinertia"- tendency of someone who's bitching to keep bitching unless interrupted by an outside force.

mike (ro)bott, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

snobbery != pretentiousness

snobbery is what you feel inside. pretense is what you present to others.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

donna (donna), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
phil masstransfer can defend it reasonably lucidly and non anti-intellectually
