Houellebecq = the new Rushdie?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't tend to agree with broad dismissive statements of any kind, including Houellebecq's, but he shouldn't have to go to jail for them, no matter how distasteful. And I extend that to anyone else as well, not just famous writers.

nobody ever posts to threads regarding this author.

heh. I've been meaning to start a "Taking Sides : Limonov vs Houellebecq" thread for ages & now this comes up!

or : the failure of the contemporary avant-garde is that it can only be ideas about the thing, not the thing itself.

I almost read that as the "future" of the avant garde, and then I was gonna write a whole long post about how I was going to start a facsism club at my school and use the money provided to us to buy uniforms. a prank, but an important one. being an actual fascist right now on a college campus is probably the most rebellious pose possible!

(I'll reply properly when I have the time, but here are some articles on the eXile - Free Edward Limonov & Who Tolerates A Dissident?)

www.exile.ru? Is that where old ILE contributors go to die?

There was lots of stuff posted to threads about Houllebecq in the past, Aaron. Maybe people just ran out of things to say.

I'm afraid I'm not quite through Platform yet and I haven't even read Atomized, but of the stuff that I have read, it sounds more boorish than dangerous. Though one wonders if banging him up in jail might give him a bit of 24hr a day personal protection and unhindered time to write.

And Rushdie comes to the defense:
