"Will" is a map from the mental state of an individual to a state of the universe.
All scientific conclusions are based on the first, and all religious conclusions on the latter. Yet neither can be independently proven to exist. Even though there is a clear alternative, everyone seems to believe in at least one of the two. Why?

It's true that you can't independently prove these - I can't even imagine what we might think about or do that is genuinely independent of both, nor can I think what might constitute proof. As far as I can see we can't even prove that there is an external universe - and Descartes went too far with "cogito ergo sum" - he was tricked by the Latin conflating the subject and the verb: I can't see how you can get beyond "thought exists" with any certainty, and even that leaves you flailing around trying to define thought. For me, from there you can only take a leap of faith that what generally seems to be the case is the case.

What if Earth is like the Bowery or the East End of the galaxy?
Like we exist and have our way of life because it's all we know. People from other star systems hear about how we live and it shocks them. The few visitors we get are essentially tourists here to gawk. There are subcultures within the "subworld" of Earth. And people generally have a very pessimistic attitude towards life and their prospects, due to their inability to ever see a chance to get out.
I want to run into the intergalactic version of Jack London writing their take on the People of the Abyss. That'd be p neato.

if i were bill gates, i would write random letters to people saying "HI I AM BILL GATES AND I WANT TO GIVE YOU THE SUM OF ONE MILLION (1,000,000) US DOLLARS" and then see who writes back

"Cause" implies a map from one observable state of the universe to another.
So does "time". What's this guy's point? That nothing happens?
