people who do this, what is the deal?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 18 January 2013 09:54 (twelve years ago)

Isn't this 50% of all people.

abcfsk, Friday, 18 January 2013 09:56 (twelve years ago)

i like to imagine that they're quietly horrified by people who don't have a pic of their kids or pets on their desk top or phone, who they secretly suspect to be unfeeling monsters.

my chemtrails romance (c sharp major), Friday, 18 January 2013 10:28 (twelve years ago)

They love their kids/pets perhaps.

what picture do you have on your phone/desktop, tracer?

whose black line is it anyway? (how's life), Friday, 18 January 2013 11:32 (twelve years ago)

i will take your lack of response to mean that you are quietly changing your picture of Michael Jordan to a picture of a Lamborghini Countach.

Trayce, I shared your confusion until quite recently. Then I was away from home on business when aero jr.'s mom reported that he had taken to removing all the books from a given shelf and strewing them around the room. I was struggling with heavy depression that'd been eating at me since October, with nearly 2 weeks still to go before I'd get to go home. I set the picture of aero jr. destroying the bookshelf as my desktop. Picture gave me an automatic mood improvement about ten times a day, which I needed. Gigantic baby laying waste to some books, fuck yes. I don't think about other people's desktops in a "where's your pictures of your kid??" way, who gives a shit what other people have on their phones imo but that's the deal w/the baby pic on my phone.

too many encores (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 18 January 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

is aero jr in fact gigantic tho

lemmy's rabbles (darraghmac), Friday, 18 January 2013 14:20 (twelve years ago)

aero, jr. is big enough to strew books about the room now?

I wouldn't do this in a work setting, but I have done this on my PC. My thinking - I like the mister's face, it is a good face, I like to look at it.

emil.y, Friday, 18 January 2013 18:42 (twelve years ago)

Also, pictures of pets - animals are cute, I like to look at them.

emil.y, Friday, 18 January 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)

It's quite simple, really.

emil.y, Friday, 18 January 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)

when work is shitty it's nice to have a pic of my daughter and wife to remind me why i'm putting up with the shittiness of work

I have had a picture of my kids on my laptop for ages but the desktop is so cluttered I don't really see them

buzza, Friday, 18 January 2013 19:12 (twelve years ago)

yeah I really don't question this -- esp work desktops when maybe it helps ease that bummertown feeling of going to work all day and not seeing yr babby. not all parents feel that way but some do and I think it's nice

Tracer Hand, what is the deal?

this is fine, i used to do it, rn i'm more into the nasa picture of the day. i can see how it can be kind of clingy or like an identity declaration thing but uh judging someone along those lines is nagl because like lots of people have said it basically cheers people up. unless they have annoying sayings/maxims pinned up all over their walls too, then judge all you want i say.

Butt Trump tweet (Matt P), Friday, 18 January 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

i wish tracer would elaborate, i don't get how this could be perceived as weird. is it weird in some ultra-heteronormative wife + 2.3 kids pleasantville way or...? what am i missing.

arby's, Friday, 18 January 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

maybe if yuppie resentment could be captured in a single image tracer would understand wanting a visual reminder of the thing you love best close at hand

once & future (Lamp), Friday, 18 January 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

I only wouldn't do this in a workplace because my experience with workplaces is that I want co-workers to know as little as is humanly possible about me, and leave me the hell alone. I don't have a problem with anyone else doing it.

people can be weird about desktop wallpaper. I had this Traum wallpaper of birds for awhile and people would be like "oh so you're really into birds?". No, I just like the pic.

brimstead, Friday, 18 January 2013 19:56 (twelve years ago)

i think there's a certain kind of advertisement in the way certain people do it (esp. somewhere like the workplace) that has overtones of other motivations beyond "i like looking at a picture of this person regularly because i like them." generally more than one photo displayed proudly between candy jars and scented candles, idk. which yes can be off-putting if you happen to be single/a single woman/a single childless woman/a partnered childless woman/a gay person not blessed with the miracle of children.

I understand perfectly, I have a picture of Daniel Agger on my work desktop.

Updated version of wallet photos, I figure.

My phone has a pic of my 2 nephews wearing googly eyes, which amuses when I check it for the time during a stressful day at some customer's paper plant, wood shop, etc

At previous gig, I had a photo sent in by a customer of their cat at their front door looking out, right by a sticker for the alarms/security systems place I worked.

Why because watch cat is funny

I've got a picture of my cat on my iphone because I didn't know what else to put on there. (I used to have the borderline between Kansas and Colorado.)

I keep random pix of the kids in my personal folder here at work. Always neat to go in there looking for something and haha I forgot I had that picture of Beeps holding the cat, love that girl.
