Wushu is better known as Kung Fu. So if you want someone not to pick a sport, call it by an obscure name that no-one's ever heard of.

Full descriptions here.

"Roller sports"? As in, Olympic roller derby?

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 11:48 (twelve years ago)

I like baseball. Let's get it back but make the games relatively short.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 11:49 (twelve years ago)

Wait why was wrestling removed?

abcfsk, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)

baseball can entirely fuck off from this

Black Sabbath - violence, religious obscurantism (imago), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 11:55 (twelve years ago)

WHAT??? wrestling is the quintessential olympic sport! half-naked muscly boys rolling around and grunting!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 11:56 (twelve years ago)

Indeed, why not have cricket if you're going to have baseball? (xp)

Voted squash, 'cos I don't know why it's not in the Olympics in the first place

Le petit chat est mort (Tom D.), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 11:57 (twelve years ago)

Black Sabbath - violence, religious obscurantism (imago), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 12:00 (twelve years ago)

Baseball was fun when it was in.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 12:01 (twelve years ago)

Cimbing's a hobby, not a sport!

This. It's daft that it isn't there already.

None of these rubbish things

habemus paparazzi (darraghmac), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 12:15 (twelve years ago)

Squash, but as part of a scheme to further monetise the Olympics, it should be renamed 'Cola'.

They used to have Tug-o-war

Bring back croquet!

brogue element (seandalai), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)

i can't believe squash isn't Olympic yet. it's super-global, with top players from countries that hardly ever win medals at the Games (Egypt, Malaysia) and is played by millions.

Ludo, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 14:11 (twelve years ago)

I think it's that wrestling has to compete with these now, not wrestling is out. I'm voting for wrestling, then.

I'd like to see handball i.e. real handball, played with a wall and a ball and no equipment. That's a pure sport right there.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)

climbing probably better to do that to watch (assuming it's all on an indoor wall?)

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

better to do than to watch

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

baseball's the one sport i'd have bothered to go watch when london had the olympics. Figures they would reinstate it for a future olympics.

wrestling is the quintessential olympic sport! half-naked muscly boys rolling around and grunting!

Baseball sure, but Tracer otm. (Make it nude and even more Greek.)

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

Wrestling was part of the original ancient Olympics. Why the hell would they pitch it overboard?

Aimless, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 19:26 (twelve years ago)

As a lifelong karate stan, I'd enjoy watching it or wushu, assuming they weren't ruined with crazy rules the way taekwondo was

but WTF LEAVE WRESTLING IN THE OLYMPICS

Brad C., Tuesday, 12 February 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

bring back pankration!!

Squash is too fast for television, which counts against it, apparently.

Alba, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 00:07 (twelve years ago)

Read it as Waterboarding. I'll go with waterboarding.

I've often wondered (well, not really - just now to be honest) how much of a transition it is to go from the solid, whitewashed walls of a trad squash court to the transparent perspex box that has to be used for tournament play - so people can actually see in. It must take a lot of getting used to.

Dropping wrestling is nonsense. The Olympics is the only time outside of a John Irving novel that people actually get to see it as a proper physical contest and not gross-out spangly entertainment. (Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, he hastily backpedals).

And golf can get lost. And I like golf.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 11:50 (twelve years ago)

wasn't the perspex box only perspex on the back wall? i do remember seeing it on grandstand or whatever on saturday afternoons back in the day. also, i think a brit is currently ranked #1 in the world so there's another potential medal right there.

koogs, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:16 (twelve years ago)

Squash is too fast for television, which counts against it, apparently.

Don't believe this, I remember it used to occasionally be on telly back in the day (see post above). I mean, following the puck in ICe Hockey isn't exactly easy on TV either!

Isn't badminton the world's fastest sport?

ledge, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:21 (twelve years ago)

Didn't look that way at the last Olympics

Le petit chat est mort (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:23 (twelve years ago)

ha.

tennis 155mph, squash 175, badminton 205.

ledge, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:24 (twelve years ago)

I think in tournaments you can have four glass or perspex walls (suitably opaque - or one-way? - on three walls within the playing area). I don't even remember the scoring system any more. It was always first-to-nine, only server can score; then I think they introduced a rule in the pro game to encourage more attacking play and shorten the rallies where the point just went to the server if the rally was beyond a certain length? And extended the games to 15 (or 11 for women?). I should Wiki this. It's 20 years since I was on a squash court.

xp

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)

Isn't badminton the world's fastest sport?

depends what yr measuring the speed of - players or equipment? presumably the bullets in the shooting etc are faster

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:28 (twelve years ago)

that would be a viable comparison if there were someone at the other end trying to return them.

ledge, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:29 (twelve years ago)

now there's something i would watch

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:32 (twelve years ago)

The NRA could sponsor it

Le petit chat est mort (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

Much rather get hit by a 200mph shuttlecock than a 175mph squash ball. 100mph cricket ball worse than either. 75mph football in the face even more painful. Getting trampled in the dressage possibly worst of all.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:42 (twelve years ago)

i can't believe squash isn't Olympic yet. it's super-global, with top players from countries that hardly ever win medals at the Games (Egypt, Malaysia) and is played by millions.

^^^THIS so much. I'm Malaysian and we would almost definitely have had a gold medal by now if squash was included. ;_;

Roz, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:43 (twelve years ago)

so wrestling can be reinstated in September

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 12:51 (twelve years ago)

It's so strange that they're getting rid of wrestling when you think back to how much the IOC loved Karelin. And ffs it's a foundational sport for the games. It's what, the third oldest sport in (Greek) Olympic history?
