a futurama-esque one: keeping heads alive, in jars or not, was not really pursued

And just like that, we have to end the thread. Good night everybody!

blimps, obviously

What criteria are we using for "never made it" here?

they're more a novelty than the dominant form of air travel they could have been

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 14 February 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)

I was thinking more 'disappeared without trace' than 'failed to live up to expectations', but whatever. Blimps are cool.

Tesla to thread

Pretty sure that the all-acoustic rock cover lives on.

pplains, Thursday, 14 February 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

xp ??? It was the dominant form of air travel, right up until the moment heavier-than-air craft could make the same voyage in less than half the time. That's not "not making it," that's "being rendered obsolete."

You can't call that one yet, I think it will catch on.

Confused Turtle (Zora), Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:12 (twelve years ago)

The main difficulty with inventions that vanish without a trace is that we shall never have heard of them and threfore cannot share them on this thread, unless we make an effort to go out and find them. But then, where to look?

Aimless, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)

Hello Mr. Literal. /wave

OK my bad. There has to be a trace in the historical record. I'm googling variations on 'inventions that didn't make it' and looking at the track record of famous inventors. It is hard though, hence the desire to share.

I think I've been in a partial reconstruction of one of these, at the Design Museum in London, many years ago. They had a pretty big RBF exhibition on, and I remember being very impressed. It's the golden age of science fiction in actual 3D.

Hamblin glasses for reading in bed. I expect they were actually a bit annoying, because you'd have to hold the book in a pretty specific place. I'm tempted to try making some anyway.

Yup there is something wrong with it. I'll flag it up to the admins.

Snow motorcycles, like this 1936 BMW Schneekrad.

How cool is that? Reminds me of those motor sledges Scott used in his South Pole expedition, and it probably worked just as well

chilli, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

Hamblin glasses look great - they're mini-periscopes, yes?

emil.y, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:56 (twelve years ago)

Yes!
