BORING peripheral hardware computer question! - Our broadband connection dies spasmodically but frequently - modem or router???

So in in lil ol' Arkansas it actually snowed Christmas day. we didn't lose power but did lose or VoIP and internet for about 20 min. For the next few days there lights etc in the house would flash on and off threatening an outage. Since this all happened our internet has been so wack we've got a 3 year old throwing a tantrum every time Netflix stop working. I called COMCAST and the woman reported seeing no outages for us but then realized she was looking at the phone VoIP modem.DUH. She offered to send out a technician but all I really want to know is this: Is it the Modem or the router fucking up? On time when the connection quit I plugged my MBP directly into the modem and wasn't getting any connection at all. Also, while we are not getting connection, all our MAC devices have all 4 wireless bars lit up like everything is just dandy. I looked online for a similar issue but could only find one girl. Her problem was actually almost the same as mine. And she posted logs!!! Could someone read these for me and let me know what going on?

Once I disconnect, I stay disconnected. Or, I stay connected but with no access, that is.

When I'm connected using that wi-fi (showing five bars but "no internet access") here are the results:

Also, how many devices would you have running WiFi in your home before you would feel like you needed to get another access point or a router booster (are those things even vaguely worth it)?

Does your broadband link die when you just have a single computer plugged straight into it?

Hate it when that happens.

Not sure of the exact nature of your problem, sunny, but sometimes the external connection in our place has a problem which then causes a problem with the wifi that remains even after the external problem is fixed, at least until you reset the wifi. It's like when you feel the nerves pinch and you think you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome but it is really your shoulder that is tight, but maybe in the end you actually end up developing Carpal Tunnel as a result. Sure this doesn't help but..

do you think your modem got a little fried by the power going on/off?
the extender thingies are usually for poor reception -- if everyone has good strength you're probably ok in the wifi dept.

OK, now I took a step back and read the thread, just like an ilx newbie. Yeah, you are not getting out at all. Something is fried.

My own connectivity is screwed up now, think it must be all the neighbors trying to stream their last Criterions.

you could try to just restart the modem (basically unplug the power, wait 10 seconds and then replug it) and then do the same thing with your router to see if that helps, but if this is sporadic, it most likely means there really is something that is actually broken/fried.

If you can't get any connection even when plugging directly into the modem, it seems very likely that the problem is with the modem.

maybe the power supply for the modem is dying? I had a similar problem a few months ago, and that turned out to be the culprit.

COuple of things to try

1) you can reset the connection at the cable exchange end by shorting the cable, unplug the coax form the modem and touch your finger to the copper core and the screw at the same time.

2) i had issues with my cable for the longest time, it would get slow or unreliable especially when it rained. Water getting into an old cable can really screw things up. They had to send out someone to replace the cable from the pole. (To get to the point of them replacing the cable from the pole they changed out a number of splitters inside the house)

one month passes...

Thanks for the great suggestions, guys. I really appreciate them. I ended up buying a new modem which worked fine when I used an Ethernet cable but the router refused to respecognize. After a couple of days trying 10 million things I came to the conclusion that the 5-6 yr old router is maybe just too old for a new modem. So we are back to the original modem/router set up until I can bring myself to buy another router. Oddly, we don't seem to have connection dropouts anymore so the new router may end up too new for the modem. Ridiculous but whatevs. Thanks again!
