"never sensed the pungent onslaught in cartoon that, say, Gillray or Ralph Bakshi have achieved.”—David Thomson

I like Bakshi (and Thomson too) but not even Bakshi would agree w this, I wager

I need to get my Mansfield box (w/TGCHI & Rock Hunter) out of storage.

one month passes...

Rewatched Artists and Models yesterday (his first of 8 films w/ Lewis), which has a few too many Dean songs, but man, Jerry's pubescent/infant sexuality is at its most bizarre/disturbing. There's also several breast jokes for a film aimed largely at kids (something about "bared both her... shoulders").

Timely revive...rescreened Rock Hunter the other night. Superb. Kind of wonder if part of why some of his films aren't cited as much is due to all the period Pop Culture refs he crammed in. Thanks to the Buzzr channel I 'get' Remington Rand and Bennett Cerf jokes, but for everybody else...

yeah, most people who get those refs are dead at the present time.

I've been meaning to locate a copy of Susan Slept Here, I really liked that the one time I saw it, but it's been years.

My mom bought lots of second hand books, which is how I ended up with Bennett Cerf's "Laughing Stock" (1945.) I loved that book, and still remember many of the jokes, which must have been corny and outdated stuff even then.

Half as cool as Man Sized Action (Dan Peterson), Monday, 28 September 2015 19:38 (nine years ago)

p sure i remember Cerf at the end of his stints as a TV game-show wit (died 1971). I think we had at least one book by him as well.
