And I'm hoping I'm average; not many people would rate themselves a dullard.

i dunno, i think one of the first signs of dullardry is believing that you're more intelligent and interesting than 99 percent of yr species

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 February 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)

"I can't agree with the assumption that idiots are boring."

the idiots which are not boring are included in the 1%.
which means the 1% include: interesting idiots, boring smart, and interesting smart.

nostormo, Thursday, 21 February 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)

Is it possible to have a civil society without boring people?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:02 (twelve years ago)

wow! a 'zizek finds himself endlessly fascinating and becomes so fixated upon his own magnificence that he spends only 1% of his time contemplating the existence of other people' shockah!

Aimless, Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:12 (twelve years ago)

Normally I'm not even huge on humanity, but I just read a story about a 10 year old who found Refrigerator Perry's superbowl ring, bought it for $8500, and then gave it back to him. So right now humanity's ok, but at least 85% are boring idiots, so...

formerly EDB (ed.b), Thursday, 21 February 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)

Actually, scratch that. Now that we have stuff like this, is there even a need for humanity?

i quite liked zizek when all i knew about him was a couple youtube clips. in anything more than small doses, i'm discovering, the man is intolerable. the 15-year-old goth comparison is so OTM. his solipsism puts my (dreadful) 15-year-old self to shame.

99% of people itt are being boring idiots

administrator galina (Matt P), Friday, 22 February 2013 18:15 (twelve years ago)

i blame the guardian for having a terrible article and nostormo for making a stupid thread about it. 99% of people jerk their knees all the damn time, if you don't find that boring then you're not part of the humanity that's OK

administrator galina (Matt P), Friday, 22 February 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)

being a boring idiot is unavoidable, literally no one is a special snowflake, this is a basic dealwithit

administrator galina (Matt P), Friday, 22 February 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

that's how you get to the 'OK' part

He described himself in oxymoronic terms, "a cynical existentialist, antihuman humanist, antisocial social darwinist [sic], realistic idealist and godlike atheist" on his YouTube user page Sturmgeist89.[14][15] The police investigation confirmed that Auvinen was frequently bullied at school.[16] One of his teachers described him as militant radical interested in both far-right and far-left movements. He was also interested in history and philosophy.[17]

administrator galina (Matt P), Friday, 22 February 2013 18:23 (twelve years ago)

Isn't the dealwithits of life's miseries caused by special snowflakes rather than boring idiots?

Philip Nunez, Friday, 22 February 2013 18:23 (twelve years ago)

I guess boring idiots do enable malicious snowflakes though.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 22 February 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)

special snowflakes also ask 'penetrating questions' xp

administrator galina (Matt P), Friday, 22 February 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

being a boring idiot is unavoidable if you're being scrutinised by somebody who sees boring idiots everywhere

we may not all be special snowflakes, but every moment may be unique. and in what does the boredom lie beyond the mind's eye of the beholder?

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Friday, 22 February 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

Philip Nunez, Friday, 22 February 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)

Lol, yes, I had the same thought re: that description. Actually Zizek is okay in book form, it's his "small doses" public persona that's stupid. But even that's a kind of loveable stupid, as far as I'm concerned.

yes, that.

I've met a pretty small percentage of humanity.

Austerity Ponies, Friday, 22 February 2013 18:51 (twelve years ago)

To be honest, anyone who ever takes "Slavoj Zizek in 'scandalous' remark shocker" bait (the type usually peddled by places like The Guardian) is probably a boring idiot. These articles (and these statements, which are usually meant to simply rank the ire of boring idiots to begin with) have absolutely so little merit in paying attention to that the real source of complaint is the people that actually make anything of it.

Also, dude's written books and stuff. Why don't y'all read those instead of some C rate troll journalism.

C rate troll journalism

Let's see how this works. zizek says something. a reporter quotes him accurately. the result is C rate troll journalism.

Aimless, Saturday, 23 February 2013 02:02 (twelve years ago)

he was joking tho. he's not really misanthropic. he's wrote books.

99% of people are boring idiots. haha! good one!

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 23 February 2013 10:49 (twelve years ago)

lance armstrong will have been delighted (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 February 2013 10:56 (twelve years ago)

alright, narcissism of this type makes you look like an ignorant cunt will that do?

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 23 February 2013 11:01 (twelve years ago)

true peace is not to be found striving for the acceptance of others -_-

lance armstrong will have been delighted (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 February 2013 11:05 (twelve years ago)

i don't think it's about being accepted by others i think it's about being receptive to the endless fascination of the world around you

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 23 February 2013 11:07 (twelve years ago)

ah but one must listen for the stillness of the mind to truly hear that which is all around us

lance armstrong will have been delighted (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 February 2013 11:07 (twelve years ago)

the humanity quote isn't even the dumbest thing in the article

Žižek has had to quit most of his teaching posts in Europe and America, to get away from these intolerable students. "I especially hate when they come to me with personal problems. My standard line is: 'Look at me, look at my tics, don't you see that I'm mad? How can you even think about asking a mad man like me to help you in personal problems, no?'"

I like to do crazy things. But I did my Marxist duty. I got friendly with the Pakistani taxi driver who showed to me and my son reality. The whole structure of how the workers there live was explained, how it was controlled. My son was horrified." This summer they are off to Singapore, to an artificial island with swimming pools built on top of 50-storey skyscrapers. "So we can swim there and look down on the city: 'Ha ha, fuck you.' That's what I like to do – totally crazy things.

this guy...so crazy! so crazy!

he's not a columbine goth kid he's the fat teenager w/ a 'I do what the voices in my head tell me to do' t-shirt. so wild. so unpredictable.

iatee, Saturday, 23 February 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)

Reminds me of HOOS's stories of his high school years, tbh. btw, isn't it SOP that Marxist intellectuals must fiercely hate the proletariat?

Aimless, Saturday, 23 February 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)

humanity is not ok, but we're kinda stuck with it, so whatever
