TTRL my favorite movie here, but obv the screenplay is no more than a framework for that movie. it might be "Out of Sight"!

ryan, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

I honestly think it might be Election. And I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it won.

JFK coasts just past Election and (though A. Miller didn't change that much iirc) The Crucible.

Which I think is one of the most well-written movies I've ever seen, not an ounce of fat.

But fat adds flavor. So, again, JFK.

Sonafabitch, there he goes again – he's got his hands on the chicken switch.

We're told by your government that my brain has disappeared. That's not all that's disappeared. With it, the concept of justice.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 00:27 (twelve years ago)

vee haf to cohntroll the eentelligence from Saigon

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 00:31 (twelve years ago)

As much as I love Goodfellas, is it a great script? I don't know. Definitely funny, but I attribute that to the actors--you know, the way they tell a story. Then there's the music, and bravura direction like the Copa shot. That's why I don't vote in the screenplay polls. I probably take for granted the very foundation of the film.

clemenza, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 00:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah i dont feel like you can vote on these without reading the scripts

turds (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 01:01 (twelve years ago)

I think the mistake I make is a kind of internal assumption that a certain kind of film I like--visually ordinary, invisible direction, all about the performances and the story (I'm sure I could think of a better example, but something like Broadcast News)--is a writer's film, while arcade funhouses like Goodfellas are directors' films. But when Scorsese's at his worst (for me, Cape Fear and Gangs of New York), he probably started with a lousy script--which in turn makes all the razzle-dazzle that much worse. Which is one of Kael's central points in "Circles and Squares": instantly identifiable directorial style without a good script as the foundation is not necessarily a virtue, and often is the complete opposite.

clemenza, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 01:35 (twelve years ago)

the script of Goodfellas is dynamically structured and employs one of the best narrations ever.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 04:20 (twelve years ago)

Haha, who voted for Hamlet? It doesn't really seem like a radical adaption, scriptwise...

Frederik B, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 10:22 (twelve years ago)

doing the whole play is kinda radical
