everyone always gets so excited when spring is finally here, but this is a thread for appreciating the slow onset of spring

i love how clean the streets look after the snow melts

and/or talking about rites of spring -- actual rites, not the band (unless you are dying to talk about the band but tbh i never felt strongly about them one way or the other)

i love the smell

this is going to be a good month. i turn 30 and i get my annual bonus on the day i turn 30, with a week off work.

longer evenings have just started becoming noticeable too.

What you'll hear in the Fern Room is Orniphonia 2 by Chicago composer and artist Bob Snyder. Importantly, there are no actual bird sounds in this piece at all—everything is created through electronic means using analog synthesis. The compositional approach is similar to the groundbreaking Forbidden Planet (1956), the first movie with an electronic soundtrack. In that film, each character is accompanied by a unique sound created by an electronic circuit. In Orniphonia 2, the sound of each “creature” is also generated by a particular circuit. Each circuit generates patterns consisting of cycles within cycles that interact and change. The fact that a circuit producing regular interacting patterns of change can mimic a living organism reflects the fact that all living things exhibit rhythmic behavior, and that all biological life interacts with its environment in a regular way.

March isn't my favorite month, but February is my most hated month, so by comparison, March is pretty fucking awesome. And a sign of better things to come.

March isn't my favorite month by a long shot, but it's much much closer than, say, December.

I don't get excited about March anymore, because March is the month of false hopes. March always lets you down. But yeah, at least it's not fucking February, by far my most hated month.

The excitement of March is dampened a little by the prospects of a snowstorm getting prepared to dump up to a foot of snow on us tomorrow. :/

Also the part of the forecast that pointed out additional systems on the way that may likely mean March alone exceeds our snow totals for all of the rest of winter.

Fret if you must — I will deal with snow when it happens but the trajectory is inevitable. It will gradually get better and no snow dumps can stop it.

Not fretting, I'll believe it when I see (and shovel) it, just admitting that it dampened my excitement somewhat.

March is a weird word for a month.

It's not like many of them make much sense. February is just a weird word altogether, while September, October, November and December are based on the Latin for seven, eight, nine and ten, respectively. All very plainspoken and orderly you might think. But they're months 9 through 12.

The numerical discrepancy is because the calendar ours is based on originally only had ten months in it so when they inserted two new ones it got all messed up. Why did they add them at beginning and mess up the count? They didn't! Originally New Year's Day was March 1st and January and February were at the end of the year.

Two weeks till my Montanaversary — on March 15, 2023, my wife and I got on a plane from Newark to Kalispell (via Salt Lake City). Can't believe it's been a whole year. We fucking love it so much here, too.

Austin weather has been unspeakably delicious for the last couple of days, went to the dentist yesterday and just wandered around for a while instead of going back to the office

i sat in the sun outside a tacqueria in the utah desert yesterday afternoon. it certainly felt like the first day of spring to me. it's colder back home today but this week will warm up. the spring rollercoaster begins.

I've been off work the last couple of days and it's been warm enough to be in the garden. About 12 degrees (54 in $). I hacked down our passion flower today and it was *almost* t-shirt warm.

we're supposed to see 71*F here in Northern CA tomorrow

Definitely enjoying this, though mindful that this is only the first our false springs.

It's weird the spring doesn't officially start for another 2-3 weeks, and also weird that winter doesn't officially start until almost christmas, seems like somebody messed up somewhere

I don't know who introduced these official designations of the dates of the seasons but reckon they were overstepping their remit. We should just define them as

Winter: Dec-Feb
Spring: Mar-May
Summer: Jun-Aug
Autumn: Sept-Nov

In Central Texas Summer lasts until October now, and Fall is Nov-Dec

It definitely means something now -- scary storms. But almost every month means scary storms anymore.

the relief of march's onset is partially about weather but not entirely.
for me, who does not celebrate Easter or anything related to it, March also means months and months of relief from family-centered holidays PLUS relief from walking on ice (frozen water). that's enough relief that i feel genuinely grateful for it.

it's march. what's going on? weather continues to be weird. it's been very warm and rainy. misty today. we've had our warmest winter on record. also just about the worst snowpack. every year is a new adventure when the climate is changing so rapidly. kinda worried about the summer. one day at a time.

i'll take the weather right now though, for sure. any snow in the valley we received from the same freak storm that turned into that noreaster on the east coast is long gone. my main running trail is back in business. 60 degree highs are incredibly pleasant. the direct sun has a fair amount of energy behind it. equivalent to its strength in september! it's still a somewhat similar story as it always has been, spring. the air is cold and the sun is hot. after the waning of the light its intensity is a shock and it'll burn ya. around september i've already been through summer and my skin is brown and unaffected by it.
